A1200 networking questions
« on: March 29, 2003, 03:17:55 AM »
Ok folks. The 1200 got here today and I thought I had a fully compatible pcmcia card for it but it just locks the machine up. It was an old 10mb/s d-link.

What pcmcia card should I use and where can I get it? Is there a serial connection alternative for connecting to a Windows box?

After getting the card, I am going to need to install the driver. I can get it from Aminet and copy them to a 720k floppy.

Will my amiga read the 720k format and how do I do that?

After driver installation, it would be nice to connect to the internet. I am quite familiar with how to network on PC but it seems I may need some software to get the 'miggy' to connect via tcp/ip. If I can get FTP working that would be great. I run an FTP on my big Athlon.

What do I need to get TCP/IP and FTP working?

Download cnet.device from aminet. This is the
PCMCIA card driver, and it contains a list of
compatabile cards.

Use CrossDos to format the floppy disk...move
the PC0 icon from Devs/Storage/Dosdrivers to
Devs/Dosdrivers (if it isn't already there)
and reboot...then you can format PC0, and swap
files between your PC and Amiga. Conversely
you can just click on the PC0 icon when you
need it to activate the "device".
(BTW you'll have to format the disk on your
Amiga as an MS-DOS type disk in order to read
it on your Amiga...it won't read PC format
disks otherwise)

You will need a TCP/IP program like Miami or
Genesis and a browser to connect to the internet.
Miami is faster on my system for some
reason, but Genesis is free with OS 3.9.

thanx for the advice. formatting a dos disk with crossdos is invaluable info.

I'm having trouble finding DD floppies except on ebay. I found that my Win95 machine will not format a 1.44M floppy as a 720K. I'm thinkin I can solve that problem by placing some tape over the hole on the left of the disk.... haven't tried it yet. I had some trouble with HD disks on my A500 but I think I may have solved it by replacing the drive... still not sure though. I have seen on Toms (Tweeks) website that HD disks give people trouble. Sorry for the long explaination but can anyone add info on that?

baring problems with PC floppy to amiga, I have a Linksys 10mb/s card coming that is ne2000 compatible and (hopefully) cardbus I. I don't know the model number but do you think the cnet driver will work with it?

on miami: have heard something about a key. What is it? do I need it to use FTP? can I get genisis without a key? What FTP client do i need?

Taping off the one side really helps. I use taped HD disks
in my DD amiga drive when I have to and they work fine,
although it still may not be good for the drive (I haven't had
problems...yet ;)). I know that without tape they will
definately "jack up" the amiga drive though.   :)

The Linksys 'may' work depending on the type...I had one (it had
the 'dongle' built into the card) and it crashed the system
immediately. Some do work though...check cnet.device for the
full list. There's also a guy selling Linksys cards that are 1200
compatabile on Ebay right now...you could check to see if they're
the same etc.

Miami needs a key that isn't availabile anymore..there's a 30min
demo on aminet, but the archive is too big to crossdos on a 720k
disk. Genesis comes free with OS3.9, but then you need a CD
drive...you will need either one though to browse/ftp.

Check www.vapor.com for an ftp program...also check aminet
there may be free ones.

It looks like the Miami 3.2 archives on aminet are small
enough to be downloaded on 720k disks. That may work.

Probably best to get a known compaible PCMCIA card from an Amiga dealer.  Some used to come with TCP/IP stack and drivers IIRC - not sure if they still do that.  Note that as well as cnet.device, there is a 3c589.device on Aminet which works well for 3Com 10Mbps PCMCIA Ethernet cards (model numbers containing "589", eg Etherlink III)

Serial connection: there is a NullTCP driver on Aminet that you can use with a null-modem cable, but believe me this sort of communication is painfully slow.

There is no real problem using HD disks as DD disks.  The magnetic field reading HD disks is higher than DD disks, so the HD's can handle the change.  I've been using HD's as DD's for years and had no problems with it - although I do know some people who have had problems.

The real problem is when you use DD's as HD's.  DD's were never meant to handle the magnetic force that HD's are, so the DD's die very quickly.

Ok... When I get this working, I'm going to post a Tutorial on it. For now (since no one else is getting the point) all further questions will be in the appropriate lobby.

My fault for not posting in the appropriate lobby to begin with.
