C64 games that were better than thier Amiga counterparts ?
« on: April 09, 2011, 04:10:47 PM »
I remember back in the day, and even sometimes still today that it wasnt uncommon for it to be suggested a C64 version of a game was more playable than its amiga counterpart. While I dont think it's as frequent as might be suggested there is no doubt some games where it is true.

For me, Creatures was better on the c64. There was nothing wrong with the Amiga version, but for no obvious reasons it lost the charms of the original. Armalyte I also thought was much better on the C64, the Amiga version looked ok, but played terribly. Katakis is another one that I thought the C64 version was much better. Not to say I disliked Amiga Katakis, but theyre quite different games, and I prefer the C64 game. StreetFighter1 was also much better on C64 than the Amiga. It was a little humble, but still played quite nicely. The Amiga version looked ok for the time, but was awful to play. Cabal was also much better on the C64 than Amiga in my opinion. For pure fun I actually like the c64 version above the arcade machine.

Anyone else have any they'd like to add ? I guess speccy/amstrad cpc/etc. as well if that's your kettle of fish.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Hmmm it's rare (owned a C64 from 83 until today).

Plenty of C64 games had lovely parallax scrolling. ST por...I mean Amiga games rarely had proper full screen parallax....just a copperlist.

Sidewinder's loading music = soundtrack from C64 game called Panther....sounds better on C64.

Others claim Gianna Sisters on C64 but I don't like that game.

Defender of the Crown on C64 has better gameplay (but so does PC and ST version)

Encounter... :)

On the C64 it had you actually ducking and diving in your seat, it lost something in the Amiga version... :(

Personally, I can't think of any.  However, there were a few that were on par.  Red Storm Rising on the C64 was just as enjoyable as the Amiga version.
A2000, A3000, 2 x A1200T, A1200, A4000Tower & Mediator, CD32, VIC-20, C64, C128, C128D, PET 8032, Minimig & ARM, C-One, FPGA Arcade... and AmigaOne X1000.

Pool of Radiance (the SSI AD&D game); possibly others in that line, too.

Simply because the C64 monster encounter illustrations (the image they showed before you'd go to the isometric battle map) were straight out of the 1st edition AD&D monster manual (or MM2 or Fiend Folio as the case may be).  The Amiga used (sometimes animated) "new" art.  Didn't care for it.

I liked Temple of Apshai on the C64 better.  I can't pin down why, exactly.
Back away from the EU-SSR!

Bombjack, Donkey Kong and those types of classic arcade games. Bombjack had an official port, but the arcade translations like DK were from individuals that offered as more or less shareware. Good ports by those standards, but a shame that commercial, more polished ports weren't produced.

Deluxe Galaga for the Amiga is great, but it's still not Galaga. Still has this "homebrew" feel to it that's tough to shake.

I'll have to check out Cabal and the like between the two systems. Ikari Warriors and Commando come to mind too. Just seemed like the 8-bit versions of these games "felt" more solid.

Ultima III was better.  The attempts to use the mouse instead of keyboard for movement just wasn't good.

I heard that ThunderBlade was better on the C64 than on the Amiga.  Possibly because the character graphics modes on the C64 accelerated the tile-mapping effects while the Amiga had to make up the difference with the blitter.  (And a lot of the early games didn't have the benefit of interleaved bitplanes that came with Kickstart 3.)

I had a long time ago a Wheels Of Fire compilation for the C64 and recently bought the Amiga version. Power Drift and Turbo Outrun were better on the C64 in terms of gameplay and sound, but graphics were better on the Amiga version. Haven't tested Chase HQ and Hard Drivin' yet.
