Title: Best looking game?
Post by: lassie on August 18, 2012, 05:05:30 PM
Hi guys what do you think that is the best looking game on the Amiga?
Title: Re: Best looking game?
Post by: runequester on August 18, 2012, 05:35:25 PM
I guess it depends.

If you break it down a bit:

OCS/ECS game: A lot of candidates. Agony is gorgeous, the original Shadow of the Beast was something never seen before on home computers.
The Settlers, if you factor in how many little guy's the game is animating and keeping track of.

AGA: Banshee, maybe? Might be more technically impressive games, but it's got loads of detail, lots of colour and it's well drawn and animated

"Big" titles (CD rom etc): Onescapee or Genetic Species ? Both are stunning considering the hardware they can run on.

Hi:

I would love shadow of the beast series.

On OCS Lionheart looks really impressive as well.

On AGA Banshee and Slam Tilt are the first that come to my mind.

What, no one likes the Cinemaware titles like Wings or It Came From the Desert? Even Rocket Ranger has some excellent screens in it. Good stuff, me thinks.

Depends on how you rate stuff.

A game like Galactic is amazingly busy for an Amiga I think, and the style is one I like too.
The Danes did a lot of stunners IMO. Take a look at a lot of the Discovery and Innerprise stuff (Hybris, Sword of Sodan, Battle Squadron). I love that style.

I think one also has to mention Another World(and Flashback) which really was innovative in terms of graphics.

Yeap, my thoughts to..

OCS/ECS: Agony, Project X, Superfrog have impressive graphics while maintaining an ultra smooth frame rate. However, the list can be expanded to include several other titles from different genres as well, like MKII, Walker, Ruff 'n Tumble, SOTB series.. You know the drill here, just check the list of Psygnosis, Team17, Core et al. publishers :P
Still, I am visually in love with Flight of the Amazon Queen, since I believe that the main character is probably the best drawn/animated/controlable OCS human figure ever.

AmigaCD OnEscapee I believe has the most impressive artwork.

AGA.. hmm dunno I really like Aladdin but the fps rate really sucked compared to other ports of the game imho. Exodus has excellent background images (and imho is better than Napalm overal, but that's a different question :P). Again here the list is rather bog.. for example Fightin Spirit was awesomely drawn as well!

Agony is gorgeous

I know people are usually thrilled with Agony's graphics, but I've always found it somehow depressing.

There are two Stardust games and Roadkill. Also, Aladdin and Lion King.
I'll try to think of some more...

I was going to say Microcosm, may not have the best game play but graphics wise for a basic AmigaCD32 I think its the best their is. Rise of Robots also looks good, but unfortunately plays even worst!

Clickboom games where all of high quality too, Napalm, T-Zero, and Capital Punishment.

Another game I only found played a few months ago that has quite a nice stly graphics to it is Blade Warrior, game play not amazing, but worth taking a look ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgIKO8uG6lo )

Cannon Fodder looks good, and also Fightin' Spirit. (both A500 games)
Another vote for Lionheart as well.
Title: Re: Best looking game?
Post by: runequester on August 19, 2012, 05:37:33 PM
Lionheart is a bit stiff in the animations I think, but I think it's a good example of everything having a great atmosphere. I love the sort of "fantasy horror" feel.

Others that spring to mind like that are Darkmere (which I still have to sit down and figure out) and the second Shadow of the Beast.

What about Heimdall 2? It's a bit cartoonish but very well done, visually.

Defender of the Crown was drop dead gorgeous.  Jim Sachs is the Bob Ross of computer graphics...

A game that impressed me at the time (and I was a huge fan of the arcade game) was Dragon's Lair.

The conversion of the animation was pretty darn good, full screen, and streaming from floppies...

(And required 1M RAM, UNLESS you had an Amiga 1000, where it could use the kickstart RAM space.  Tricky there.. Not sure any other game did that..)

For the time, that was impressive...

The Sentinel is great looking regardless of system. I just really enjoy those simple vector graphics and the weird perspective distortion, and it all really fits with the mood of the game.

For a less controversial pick I guess I'd say Another World.

Alien Breed 3D 2

Technically speaking, Elfmania's gfx seemed like that of an arcade coin op. Ditto for Shadow Fighter on AGA - especially after enabling the speed-up hidden mode and you literally can't believe it's an Amiga moving all those things (see the subway level) at that speed!

Hmmm, thats are hard one for me as I never really experienced a massive range of Amiga games as we couldnt afford many when I was younger.

For me I would have to say (in my opinion):

OCS/ECS - Simon the Sorcerer or The Settlers or Superfrog

AGA (native) - The Shadow of the Third Moon or Slamtilt

AGA (ported) - Simon the Sorcerer 2

I really like the graphic style of Ruff N Tumble. Looks AGA, even though it's not. I don't recall it having parallax scrolling though.

Desert Strike had nice graphics too generally better than the Megadrive/Genesis version.

There sure is some cool and good looking games for the Amiga :) It is easy to see that it boosted superior graphics in the 80s, when you look at the other console/computers from that era.
