ECS output?
« on: September 29, 2015, 03:15:17 AM »
Thinking about an up-scaler for the games machine. What is the video output of ECS after it goes thru a SD/FF?

Thanks in advance.

It's whatever the output of the SD/FF is.

Typically 31KHz.

A scan doubler is an upscaler, are you planning on using two?

Was thinking of a VGA to HDMI upscaler but they look to only work at 50/60 Hz.

How about this one?  It seems to include the right kind of audio connectors to work with an Amiga, includes a power supply, and appears to be fairly well reviewed.  All for the princely sum of under $20 bucks.  ;)

If I had a TV that only had HDMI input (not VGA) I might try it.

One of the ones I was looking at but if you dig into the specs most of them will only go down to 480x640@60Hz input.

I don't buy it.  The first review says "Works perfect for Dreamcast", and I doubt Dreamcast is putting out a 640x480 resolution signal.  I think they list that only because no "modern" computer outputs lower than that, these days.  I'd bet 99% that this would work fine with 320x200 or whatever Amiga resolution, only issue might be with 50Hz PAL.

Edit: I stand corrected; Wikipedia says Dreamcast does in fact put out 640x480.  But I bet this type of device would still work fine with an Amiga.  ;)

So does a floppy booted game have a better than 30Hz output on lets say a spectrum, Cybervision64 3d w/sd/ff or a Pic4?

I don't even understand this question.  You started out by asking about Amiga output when run through a SD/FF.  If you're running native Amiga video output through a SD/FF, for example an Indivision ECS, it's going to output all modes at 31KHz.  Different SD/FF's may offer different capabilities.

If you instead hook up a graphics card like a CV64, PIV, etc., you're going to get the benefits of whatever graphics mode you use, which is completely variable depending on the modes and capabilities of that particular graphics card.

A floppy-booted game is not going to take advantage of any of the capabilities of a graphics card. So if you want to promote a game to run on a display device that doesn't sync to native 15KHz Amiga output, you're going to need to use a SD/FF (i.e., Indivision, GBS-8220, DCE ScanMagic, AGA-2000, A2320, etc.).

I do have those graphics cards and the all display ECS games on boot from disk. My question is will they be compatible with any upscaler?

Huh? I don't understand the question at all... What does a graphics card have to do with ECS or a SD/FF?
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

So if I understood you need something to do 15Khz->HDMI resolution
of choice solution so you can play old games in new high resolutions ?

Some (most) new TVs do a job very nice but some not so much. They take
care of interlace too.I'm sure there is a gadget that inputs Amiga PAL or
NTSC signal and outputs TFT resolutions but quality of picture may not
be so good.

Starting from scratch I would get an Amiga 23 pin video & stereo RCA jacks to RGB SCART cable and a RGB SCART to HDMI upscaler.

That may be the way to go, Some have RGB RCA inputs!
I asume no FF/SD would be needed at that point.
