First off what type of internet connection are you using?  Second are you using just a straight serial cable or null modem???  Third if your using a high speed why not get an ethernet card for the 1200 (PCMCIA if its not towered).
Anyways here you go -- on the Windows (assuming thats whats on the PC) goto add/Remove programs.  Goto system components click on the windows setup tab and select communications.  In commuications select direct cable connection and install.  That should work for your connection there.

Ok, i'm using adsl connection here 3mbps with wifi router.
The pcmcia ethernet card for the moment is impossible. I just want some connectivity for telnet and irc.

The Windows "direct cable connect" is regular PPP except that the strings CLIENTCLIENT, CLIENTSERVER are exchanged before the PPP handshaking will begin.

I got internet access via serial using Genesis and win2k, so it is possible. I set up static IPs and ran a proxy server on the PC. Otherwise Windows didn't want to share the internet connection over serial, as it seemed to ASSume that the serial connection WAS the internet connection. Maybe XP/Vista are different though, I don't know.

You have a Mediator, It'll set you back about £5 for a 100baseT Ethernet card to use with it, I urge you to go for that option as soon as pos. Serial is just so damn....s..l...oo..ooo........w...
Or is this for a different A1200?

The only serial connect I've ever used for PC-Amiga was a null-modem using the "PC2Amiga" software under XP, worked great but I was only using it for file transfers. Good luck anyhow. :-D
Falling into a dark and red rage.

Yeah the mediator route is for a towerised 1200 i have. But this is one that i want to keep in desktop case for classic stuff such demos, games etc.. and i want to connect it a little to the external world. Only want irc and telnet capabilities.
Thanks for the replies. Anyone with any clue to how i can set up the two computers?. Also i have read about a proxy here and surfing in the net, but how can it be setuped to giving inet connection to the serial connection?.
Also i have realised that the serial connection on xp doesn't exist as is as on w98. There are only a "incoming connections" setup if you use the xp net wizard.
Need suggestions and help!
Thanks a lot!!

You might have a look at MochaPPP, which Palm/PocketPC users have had good success with in the past.

You setup a com port to listen on and use your PC as a router.

Here is a linky where they see it with how to use it with a Psion...

How to setup MochaPPP with serial lines and Psions

You could try Amiga Explorer from Cloanto:

http://www.amigaforever.com/ae/

It will work with both a Serial Null-modem cable or TCP/IP over ethernet. They say it's quite easy to set up.
A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G
AROS - 80 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, P4-3.2GHz

Amiga Explorer is strictly a file transfer solution.  It is about as bonehead simple as it gets (with the floppy you can  boot the Amiga blind without a monitor and just operate from the PC side), but the Windows suckage does show through. You thought you could map to a drive letter and/or use a .bat script to automate your long, slow copy jobs?  Or expect large copy operations to operate unattended reliably?

Amiga Explorer won't forward internet packets, so it won't do what the original poster wanted.  I have used the Linux pppd command and Miami to do pretty much this exact thing, for pretty much the same reason: to have Jabberwocky up while ditzing around on my A1200-with-unviolated-wedgie-case.  I can't remember, though, how to set it up to forward packets (iptables something...) (It is also possible to use getty, if you want login control).

If you want to do go this way and need more help, email me at catmrad@usermail.there-is-no-cat.com.  I've been doing a bit of Amiga resussitation lately and have been meaning to hammer out the details of doing thses knds of things.  (If I can only get the Linux affs file system working...)

This guide is very old. I used it with win98 and a1200 + miami years ago.

Ok, these are the commands to have Linux route your DSL/whatever to your Amiga over the serial port.  I know it works because I am typing this on my A1200 connected in just this manner.

pppd noauth lock proxyarp 192.168.0.10:192.168.0.11 /dev/ttyS0 57600 persist &
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

You have to be logged in as root or sudo it, of course.  The first command starts PPP...
192.168.0.10 is the Linux box address on the ppp interface (pick an unused address, not the same as the address on the ethernet interface)
192.168.0.11 is the Amiga's address
/dev/ttyS0 is the first serial port (use ttyS1 for COM2)
57600 is the baud rate
persist lets you "dial" back in after dropping the connection
The & makes pppd run in the background

The echo command writes a 1 in that super-special spot that turns packet forwarding on.

The Amiga side just needs to connect without a dial script using the static address you gave it.

If you don't have Linux installed, you can burn a Knoppix CD and boot/run it right off the CD.
