Title: AmigaOS 4.1 and year 2011
Post by: lorenko on November 13, 2011, 02:05:47 PM
Hi, I'm an old Amiga enthusiatic, in the last few months I rediscovered the amiga, with an old Amiga 1200 Classic and with an Sam440ep.
I loved amiga, I'm a windows user at work and a macosx user at home.

Amigaos 4.1 has cooled my expectations. The system is very slow (but this was not a really surprise), The most annoying thing is that the system is really unstable, requiring several restarts!! The gui is not so clean, the fonts are quite rough (I tried two monitors and different screen resolutions). I suppose the system is still under heavy development. I like to program for my hobbies. The nice thing is that you can download the SDK even though I find that lack of documentation and it takes longer to understand the mechanisms of events and interfaces.
Internet browsing is some what frustrating.
I'm sure this is the beginning of a long journey, I'm sorry if my opinions are out of place but as I'm fairly new excuse me.
Thank you very much

Yes, not update problem, whole system seems fragile

Which system are you saying is unstable, the A1200 or the Sam?  I just recently installed OS4.1 on my A4000 and compared to OS4.0 it is considerably more stable.  On a whole, I'd say my issues are more related to the amount of free memory than anything else and I'm playing around with a swap partition to see if that helps.  On the A4000, NetSurf appears to be quite stable, ableit not as quick as I would like.

I can't speak to the Sam as I don't have one.  Overall, I'm pretty impressed with how polished the installation is for OS4.1 for the classic machine.  I'm typing this from NetSurf 2.8.

The Sam system, classic A1200 is the same I left :)
Searching in the net I saw that qt4.7 were ported to amiga, this would be a great stuff for Amiga. Hope so

I've had zero problems with OS4 on my SAM 440ep, sincerely.

Sharp display on 10 different monitors in high res modes, etc - things work fine, super fast refreshes, etc.  Bone stock SAM 440ep.  Personally, I wouldn't touch OS4 on a legacy machine with accel/gfx card, but that's just me.

Your post is very vague, I don't really see what specific things are giving you problems and on what machines.  I'd love to give you a hand if I can if there's more info.  I'd suspect a bad SW config or bad hardware somewhere along the chain.  I'd recommend a fresh install of OS4.1 u3 and go from there to see if it resolves anything at all.  I'm not familiar enough with OS4.1 on legacy machines to offer much advice, I'm afraid.

CORRECTION:  I did run into an issue or two once, but it boiled down to bad hard drives that even Spinrite on the x86 side was unable to keep running for tolerable lengths of time, nothing to do with OS4 or the SAM HW.

Don't think it's changed a heck of a lot over the years.  Bang enter at countdown for console.  If you have any probs gimme a holler and I'll fire the SAM up and verify the process.

Just want to say OS 4.1 is very fast and very stable on my Sam 440ep 600....
Sounds like you have either a hardware issue or you've installed something that's not quite right!

I suppose the system is still under heavy development.
Depends on how you define "heavy" :)

I think he is referring to the Frieden brother. They are no lightweights.

Heavy .... stable ..... speed ....
It's all relative ... :)

When I install a program do I have to set the stack or is default setted by the system? (...stable.. reaching always stack limit ...  guru meditation ....) .. :(

The stack will default to what is set in the icon for whatever you are running, or that set in DOS Prefs if higher.

It is a very good idea to increase the value set in DOS Prefs to at least 64K (IIRC it defaults to 32K)

@ackcontrols

(since I'm here...) Is there anything particular in NetSurf that seems slow?  What screenmode are you running in?
