The most LONG-LIVED Amiga games...
« on: August 04, 2007, 04:55:53 PM »
Hello!

Many times we've talked about our favourite Amiga games.
But... I remember I've spent so many hours playing games that today I stop after few minutes.
There are instead other games, perhaps not my favourite at all, even with an ugly graphics, that are immortal and I'm always ready to play them, also after fifteen or twenty years and even if I've completed them many many times.

In short... which are the most long-lived Amiga games?

It would be good if everyone could list 5-10 games in according to this idea because that could be a nice guide for the WHDLoad games that we MUST keep installed into our hard drives...  :-)
And... I'm pretty sure that we can still discover "new" games thanks to suggestions of other people!

Here is my list (in a random order...):

- Defender of the Crown
- The Secret of Monkey Island
- It Came From the Desert
- Zany Golf
- Pinball Fantasies
- Lemmings
- Sensible Soccer

I'm surely forgetting some others but it should be a good point to start...  :-D

For me, I'd have to say:
Codemaster's Micro-Machines

I still play often to this day, sometimes against one of my buddies who's also fan of the title.

Some games for which I'll still play a game for a lenghty amount of time occasionaly:
Colonization
Dizzy's Excellent Adventures
Lotus I, II, III & Top Gear 2
Prince of Persia
BC Kid
Syndicate

Hmm.... Things (that haven't already been mentioned) I still go back and play when I'm on an Amiga....

- Nuclear War
- Stunt (Track|Car) Racer (null-modem networked is a blast!)
- Fury of the Furries
- Shadow of the Beast series
- The Settlers (two player/two mouse mode is particularly excellent!)
- Super Stardust (which is now out in a new version on PS3?)
- Project X

And I'm sure I'm still forgetting plenty, as well...

With just three replies I've noticed that I've forgotten a lot of fantastic games.

Flashback
A1000 - A2000 (020/16) - A3000 (060/50) - A500 - A500+ - A600 - A1200 (030/50) - CDTV - CD32

Dune 2 is one of the few games I ever bought for the Amiga.  It's great until you've beaten it about a dozen times.  It has a very compatible HD installer included so you don't even need a WHDLoad slave.

So now the whole world knows who the damn Pirate is that killed the Amiga!!!  It's about time you confessed your crimes. Don't show up at any Amiga shows, you may get stoned to death with Boing Balls.

What a coincidence that this thread appears the day after I got the urge to spend some time on my A500 w/GVP 530 Turbo last night.  I started about 9pm to play a little "Pool of Radiance" SSI turn based RPG and before I knew it, the clock was showing 3am on it's face.  I have not played any games on any of my Amigas for many many months, but back in 1987 I spent many nights staying up until 3am playing one of the games shown in my list below, and then getting up at 5:30am to get ready for work.  Ahhhh, to be young again and able to recover from 2 hours sleep so easily.

Games I loved to play and would still get out of the box to spend a few hours playing today include:

Millennium 2.2, Return to Earth (spelling incorrect from the developer, not sure why I like this one so much)

All of the SSI turn based RPG games like; Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pool of Darkness, Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, Dark Queen of Krynn. (Construction Kit called "Unlimited Adventures" released on the PC, but not the Amiga, still has an active group creating new game modules in this style today.  When I am a better programmer I am going to port Unlimited Adventures to the Amiga with a conversion utility that will allow all the dozens of user created PC game modules to also be played on the Amiga)

MegaBall 4

UFO Enemy Unknown

Stellar Conflict (1 to 4 player strategy)

Fire Power (head to head split screen or null modem tank battle)

Many many more.  Amiga has so many great old games.  :-D

For sure... Plenty of greats we forget.
- Star Control (DUH! You'd think I'd remember THAT one!)

And lesser known ones that still offer some great play value:

- Starflight (was quite an amusing little space exploration / trading sim type thing)

- Big Business (The game itself is humorous in the research, corporate espionage, marketing, etc...  And the news headlines... "US Department of the Obvious study determines that large sums of money can be valuable!"  Then add in the fact that after playing for a little while the entire economy of the game glitches and goes pear-shaped, so you have people getting loans of billions of dollars from their parents...  This entire game usually results in laughter so hard someone loses beverage through the nose.)

- Conflict! (A rather simplistic but entertaining Middle East political simulator where you control Israel and try to bring stability to the area...  Mostly text-based but you inherit a difficult set of situations each time, trying to find the best ways of dealing with the unhappy people in the West bank, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, etc...)

I realize you meant it as a joke but I'm not amused.  I gave up piracy in favor of public-domain software when I got my Amiga because I knew, as a programmer, that I would be a hypocrite not to since I would eventually be writing games and software that I would expect people to pay for.   :-x
