Commodore 65 board "resurrection"
« on: December 16, 2012, 12:01:59 PM »
Dear Friends,

finally, we got it :) On www.retrocommodore.com you can find an article about "resurrection" of an old unpopulated C65 rev 2b board using CSG4510 R5. My friend Giorgio also created a floppy disk adaptor using a classic PC floppy drive on the C65 board. Enjoy! ;)

Take care, Carlo

Nice pictures, too bad the text is only available in Italian, not English. And congrats on resurrecting it. :)

I read it with google translate & while it may have not done a brilliant job of translating, I was hoping for a few more details.

That adapter is one slick piece of work.

The C65 wasn't even finished, to begin with.

Reproducing a C65 would, therefore, be a huge undertaking. They would have to reproduce hardware that isn't very well documented and was still in it's early prototype stage when Commodore abandoned it. They would also have to fix/rewrite Commodore Basic V10.0 and find a way to make the system binary compatible to more than the acknowledged 60-70% of C64 software.

So in short, I don't think anyone is going to manufacture new C65s. Nor would there be any sense in it, other than satisfying the curiosity of an elite few.

I agree with Blinx123.. more or less :)

C65 Rev 5 was quite a complete machine... very near to launch... Of course latest ROM revision had some unimplemented commands. C65 was sent to all Commodore departments to do final testing and package was completed with some instructions for use it. Commodore didn't want a full - C64 - compatible machine: they wished 70 - 80 % of compatibility in C65 mode and 100% in C64 emulation inside the machine (with Go 64 command in C65 mode you can turn in C64 emulation mode)

Take care, Carlo

Hopefully someone will implement the C65, or something very close to the specification and spirit thereof, within an FPGA in the near future.
