Title: THE worst Amiga games?
Post by: Nick on February 24, 2003, 11:24:12 AM
Hello

What do you think are THE very worst games for the Amiga? I mean commercial stuff. If we went into PD stuff we`d endup with THE biggest thread ever. :-)

Though I haven`t played it much (for obvious reasons), I`d say The Addams Family. This has to be the worst excuss for a game ever made. I have it boxed and everything. It came with a few other games when i bought a load of Amiga stuff for £20. No graphics, no apparent playability and no point.

I didn't think it was physically possible to create a "bad" game on Amiga. Just the mere fact that it runs on Amiga raises its appeal 100 fold over anything else on any other platform. This is a well known phenomenon among avid Amigans worldwide and is aptly referred to as the Jay Miner constant! :-D

hehe j/k

PS: I even remember playing PONG for hours within that Alienbreed game. Truly awe inspiring!!! lol!

Sorry I can't even think of one, this will be a short thread indeed methinks...hehe.  :-D

Captain Planet.

Truly awful. IIRC, I formatted the disk pretty much straight away. Not the best choice for bundled software ever made.

BTW: Anyone here ever manage to finish Harlequin? This has to be one of the hardest games ever.

I think this was crapy...

But my Brother likes this game :-)

"Though I haven`t played it much (for obvious reasons), I`d say The Addams Family"

I don't think I could disgaree with you any more about The Addams Family. It's brilliant! I think it's the closest we ever got to a Mario beater on the Amiga and was head-and-shoulders above many other over-rated platformers (Zool, James Pond). Each to their own I guess.

As for the worst game ever on the Amiga, well... Days of Thunder was pretty awful. And Back to the Future 2. Both movie licenses as well - hmmm...

I think in my oppinion the worst game was Terminator II (Ocean)... no playability, no fun and so freaking hard (I think I never made it to level 3) ...but I had a cool bit of digitalized movie in it... but definitely  not worth the $$$...

Also I think the worst games where the licenced movie games (mainly produced by Ocean  :-x )...

@jd997uk
Harlequin was a bi*** to finnish... 8-)

In terms of sheer hype, bloody awful gameplay and disappointment, my suggestion is:

Rise of the Robots

Countless features and WIP in magazines and it turned out to be a BOS!

Death Mask
Billed as a doom clone, but you could only move in jerky increments (not like doom at all) and the gameplay sucked.  But the guy who coded it (Rombust / Nerve Axis) is a really nice guy so I can't be too harsh about it, plus he also wrote Super Methane Bros which was a fun game.
Title: Re: THE worst Amiga games?
Post by: Cojo on February 24, 2003, 12:47:48 PM
hah...
the worst for me is Tales from Heaven,
altho the gfx where ok (till the titlepicture everything was damn cool), but the playablity was totally crap...
more worse was that i actually brought it..
how stupid of me....
darkage should do more demos, than games ;)
that doesnt mean i disrespect the darkage crew now....

i agree with the fact that gloom 3 was also a bad game, totally unprofessional textures&design, "5year old pd-game alike" sounds, and no challengeing gameplay..

But my all time worst Amiga game: Dick Tracy. It is truly, truly bad.

One of the worst games I've played is Face-Off Ice Hockey by Krisalis.

It was obviously programmed by people who never actually seen a hockey game in their lives. And the fact that the Swedish hockey team actually consisted of the Swedish national football squad in the game was a nice touch too.  ;-)

Onslaught was a GREAT game imho. I always liked the moments when you cast multiple different spells (or weapons), making the screen full of explosions. I liked the feel of power in those moments. Oh, and the soundtrack (made by Maniacs of Noise) is totally brilliant, so much that I would like to make one day a remix.  :-)

About the worst games thread... anyone remembers Space Station by Janko Mrsic-Flogel? It looked like an early 8bit game. Also Bionic Commando was really awful, I remember playing it just to listen the tunes by Tim Follin.

LOL. Actually on the Fire Button site, the worst 5 games as voted by their visitors are:

1. Akira
2. Navy Moves
3. 'Allo 'Allo
4. Rise of The Robots
5. 4x4 Offroad Racing

Weirdly enough, I don't appear to own any of them...

Heh, I seem to recall alot of crappy games on the Amiga, but I'd have to agree that alot of movie based games suck, and they still do on the consoles.  Although I like T-2.  I would probably have to divide up my worst games though into categories, like worst arcade translation being the Amiga version of Street Fighter 2 (OCS), where the worst beat em up was Body Blows (awful collision detection).  And although it's practically a religion here, I thought the play of Shadow of the Beast sucked, was definitely great looking though.  I also hated the 8 bit ports that still looked 8 bit in graphics (Battle Toads, Ikari Warriors, etc.)  I really can't put my finger on one "worst game ever" though, as there were a number of games I didn't like for one reason or another.

Oh, and let's not forget the two games that came with the A1200 magic pack: Whizz and Pinball Mania.

Pinball Mania has to be the worst pinball sim ever, even compared to Microsoft's "3D" pinball.

This may be controversial, but did anybody ever play Star Lord? That has to be my most disappointing
game. I remember going into a computer shop and buying a random game which looked OK. What a waste
of £10. Parts of it seemed to make no sense at all. Though the space strategy bit was OK. Not enough
to warrant £10 though. Microprose didn`t do them selves justice in my opinion.

Hmm...  Lotta things listed here that I have to agree with as really bad. (Except for Face Off hockey - I had the C64 version, and liked it well enough, but never got a copy of the Amiga one that worked!)

Days of Thunder- At least this game gave me and my friends a hearty laugh as the gauges just randomly bounced around and the engine sample looped with a pop every half second, or so.  That, and we'd sneak up behind each other and scream "Cole, ya look like $hit out there!"  Still one of the worst racing games I've ever seen, though.

Some NOT mentioned:
Dangerous Streets - What kind of crackhead would package this game in a gamer kit???  It was about the worst street fighter clone I've ever had the misfortune of seeing.  Even the Amiga version of Mortal Kombat (back-back-forward-diagonal/down-forward-back-button to duplicate a simple 1 button move in the arcade) was better than this!!

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure - Another trainwreck of licensing...  It was bad enough it was actually pretty funny, though.

The Amiga version of Scooby Doo left a lot to be desired, as well.  In fact, most licensed games had a high potential to suck.  Looking through my disk catalog in the section titled "Why the hell do I still have this?" more than half appear to be licensed titles.

Other noteworthy titles include what I think was supposed to be a platformer called "Fire and Brimstone" and, of course, the summer games knockoffs, like "Summer Olympiad".

Navy Moves? Your kidding right?

Navy Moves was one of my favourites. Sure the first part with the boat dodging mines was awefully difficult. But it picked up later in the game. Especially the sub, ooo that was cool.

Anyway I also disagree with some of the ones listed by others, Captain Planet?!?! That one was a gem too. I was a big Captain Planet fan back then, and I found it particularly refreshing. Especially the way each planeteer had a different power and level design to go with it.

T2 was a rush job, but I finished it and found the FMVs a novel thing at the time. Of course there were some real bad ones too.

Some people loved this one to death, but I always found The Running Man lacking in something. hmmm. But by far not to be placed in the worst games category.

That place I reserve for... Warhead. Man I persisted with that one for like 2 years, thinking it was like some Elite killer, (great and intruiging intro) but it never resulted in anything. Gawd I'm sure glad Freelancer hits in March. w007!!!

Ooops!  I take back anything nice I said about Krisalis Face-Off hockey.  Quickly booting up my emulator disks, it was, indeed Gamestar Face-Off hockey that I liked.  (Except for that scary boot picture!)  Hah!  I've had it mislabelled for all these years.  My bad.

As for Amiga hockey turkeys, though, how about the Amiga version of Blades of Steel?  That one left a lot to be desired.

Also, thumbing through my disks, I found a real disappointment from back in the day... The Amiga version of Ray Tobey's SkyFox.  The C64 one was one of my all time favorites, but somehow they managed to make the Amiga one look and play worse!

Hard Drivin':  My favorite arcade game EVER was also the worst port EVER.  Of course, EVERY port of Hard Drivin' sucked!  Test Drive II had better physics, for heaven's sake!

(Don't you be slamin' Test Drive II.  That game was pure addiction).

Stun Runner: This was also a pretty bad conversion.  The arcade version was based on the same arcade hardware as Hard Drivin', so I was naturally biased from the start..  Of course, I soon realized that the arcade version sucked, too, so I shouldn't have expected any more from the home version.

Count Duckula:  I hate games when you stop moving around, the character looks blankly back at you like they have lost their will to live.  Count Dupeula is more like it.  Not so much "bad" as "boring".  I'm glad I never actually bought this one.

Celica GT Rally:  Half the time the damn game wouldn't even boot up on my A1000.  Still, I had fun playing it because it was still challenging.  But, looking back, I think I was just braindead.

Titus the Fox:  Great mascott, crap game.  I'm surprised Titus Software is still alive and making more crap games.

All Dogs Go To Heaven:  In the category of cartoon lisences, this was the worst.  Long load times were accompanied by pointless "dodge the bad guy" anticts.  The programming was so bad, the characters flickered like crazy as they "moved" across the screen.  Truly awful.

Second place awarded to Oliver and Company.  Pioneers in animation produce flickering frames on the computer.  Both Bluth and Disney did crap edutainment, even before the industry really took off on the PC or Mac.  Ouch.

Shadow of the Beast 2

Game was friggin' impossible without god codes.
Worse than that, you needed the god code within the first 10 minutes of gameplay or else you died.  Then if you made a mistake and went somewhere that you were supposed to die, you had to reboot the machine and reload and start all over.

Akira was pretty bad too.

I don't know what they were thinking when they released Luxor. After 7 tries, I could finish it in 15 minutes. You were a man in a space suit, walking accross a moon like surface, left to right, accros 10 screens or so, that pretty much looked the same. I mean, it looked okay, had good collision detection, just should have been on a disk with more games on it. Maybe it was for kids, but still.

Amiga! Aaahhh, the good old days, running into a computer games store...

Ooops I made a mistake too. I got Face-Off mixed up with Blades of Steel. Blades of Steel is the one I liked.

Funny thing. Sometimes you really think a certain game was really great but then after a long time you have a look at it and it's not as good as you had in mind.

That's why, I wouldn't part with the worst game I have and keep hunting for more. I may love a game. Later realize it was terrible, then maybe I'll do a 180 degree turn, or the heck with it, just for nostalgia and a good laugh, crave it again. Even though I don't like a game, I appreciate that someone has put in effort (or not), and used his mind (or not) and produced something he thought would interest people.

I'm an anti-piracy person, even for the worst programs, because I have written programs, and it IS work.

Only Amiga makes it easy for the average person to participate in the joy and wonder that computing is/should be!!!!!

Amiga! Unleash a geyser of creativity!

Hoya!

Does anyone remember Chicago 90 by Microïds??? :-D

Boy, although the gfx and sfx were utter rubbish, I recall having a very nice time playing it! :D

BTW, did anybody pass through the first two levels of Alien Breed 2 WITHOUT using any cheat mode??? If not, I will agree that AB2 was crap...

Be funky

hmm...

There is a lot of bad games for Amiga, but for some reason, lots of people have been playing them.. and they call themselves braindead :)

Well, I think that atleast 3000 of all arround 10000 porn games for A500 was just too bad ;) Then we have Dennis! This is the worst ever Amiga game.. I must say!

Hard Drivin was fun! 3D game on A500... wow! really nice.. and what tracks :) the music and sound didnt give that much.. but hey.. thats old games..

There will allways be good and bad games.. Dennis is my worst game for Amiga for sure!!!

I gave in to the dark side and whacked in some cheat that shows you end sequence on Harlequin.

I got pretty far in that game.

Bad games? I'll get back to you...

Chaos Engine 2 was very poor - especially in comparison to the original. It was in development hell for ages and when it finally limped onto the market it was half-finished, had little to no gameplay and a load of graphics simply recycled from the original game. Such a shame the last Amiga Bitmap Brothers game had to be such a duffer...  :-(

Game was friggin' impossible without god codes.
Worse than that, you needed the god code within the first 10 minutes of gameplay or else you died.  Then if you made a mistake and went somewhere that you were supposed to die, you had to reboot the machine and reload and start all over.

The Adams Family wasn't that bad, quite similar to The Mario Bros gameplay wise.

Odyssey was just about impossible to complete,  and the controls were pretty unresponsive.

Me and friend completed the co-op mode without cheating on AB2. I didn't complete the single player mode though, but I got pretty far. It's one of my favourite games actually.

Alien Breed 3D 2 on the other hand though....that was HARD  :-o

Hehe I`ll fold on The Addams family...I won`t play it, probably, but my first impression wasn`t good.

@Mike_Amiga

Odyssey was a damn good game. I loved that game. Only wish i could buy it. I haven`t played it enough to get very far on it, but its great.

@ MasterOfReality Wizball?!!?!  I loved that game!
Solid game control and fun.

I saw elsewhere that AArgghh was listed too.  I somewhat liked that game too, although Rampage was better.

Hi,

I am very suprised to see that no one has mentioned the 1994 amiga platform game by Black Legend called Fatman - The caped consumer. This had to be the biggest piece of ####e. I mean, The music was dire, The sound fx were crap and the game was pretty unresponsive, and they had a cheek to expect people to pay £25 for it :-o . They also released an aga version that appeared to be no different to the ordinary version.

Rainbow Islands, Now there`s a proper platform game. Me and a friend played this to death, We completed it so many times that we wore the disk out.

All right maybe Odyssey bashing was as misplaced as your Adams Family Bashing. Bit of a random shot from both of us really. However I swear there are a whole bunch of Graphical RPGs under my desk that suck rotten eggs. Just can't think of or see their names right now. :-o

Hey same one ! I was *shocked* by Dmask, but then again @ those times EVERY 3D implementation excited me. AND I liked the coder, too.

Mm.. I remember a game that my girl bought @ FNAC back when they'd sell Amiga Games, but near the end, when only unsold crap were subsisting, she wanted this game because of the colorful box.

It was a sort of "chopper rescue" clone where a prehistoric guy would ride a flying bycicle and try to collect passengers.

I mean it costed 100 FF, I still think I should be refunded on this one.

But actually, it's hard to find really bad games.

I mean I did not like the way skeleton Krew played, but I know a friend who made it rock.

Oh, another one : I HATED Chuck Rock ! And Aladdin ! And the Lion King ! (I had a 5 years old girl @ those times :) And bidule the Lion !

And Stunt Car Racer was a SHOCK of a good game ! I forgot this one in my "best" list ! put it very close to the top !!!

Title: Re: THE worst Amiga games?

Hehe this has been interesting.

There seems to be a very simple formula to creating a truely awful game. Just include one or more, of the following, in differing amounts.

-Film/TV license
We all like to watch a film, and would like to be able to interect with those charcters and do what they did. We don`t mind that the game is a sloppy game do we? I mean, we don`t mind that the game was only made fo the money do we? :-)

-Very short
Who needs a game which goes on for hours? We only want to get to the end anyway. This is not short, its efficient. :-)

-Impossible to do
Who needs an easy game. Gamers nowadays want a game which is a challenge. If its impossible its the ultimate challange. What a game! :-)

-Annoying/bad music
If the game is annoying then why not make the music match?

-Annoying/bad graphics
If you want the game to be out in time for the date we gave you 5 years ago the games developers should be allowed to miss out something surely :-)

-Really bad port
We all like the bad graphics of the C64 don`t we, so why change it? :-)

-Bad physics
Who needs realism? This is a flight sim, its not real? :-)

-Unresponsive
Gamers don`t have very good reactions so we have to allow for this by making the game very slow and unresponsive. :-)

Keep`em comin. This is quite funny, to find out just how many stinkers theres been. :-D

I've found that Amiga games have good to outstanding!!! music, even some of the worst ones that were made.

BTW: Love that check list, I could just see some guy ticking off empty boxes beside each "virtue"  :-D as it's implemented!!!

Amiga! Play it again Sam(ple)!!

P.S.  --- Ever see the Woody Allen flick?  :-D  :-D

there is alot of bad games on the amiga , but many of the games that has been mentioned here aint bad :)

anyway worst games ever must be: days Of Thunder , Dennis .nightbreed , fatman ,battle toads , 1000cc turbo , steigar , pinball mania , skychase , and INT sports challenge (empire)

there is alot of mediocre games out there , but none that is not apeealing in any way.... (like box or additional stuff... or what ever..

i also agree with MYST beeing a ripoff , i saw nothing in this game to make me play it again, besides it doesnt work on my p96 setup :) (mediator) , gloom 3 was awfull...VERY! , akira was kinda fun ...but heh impossible...(made it to level 3 tough) , wrath of the demon had exellent gfx but no gameplay (readysofts trademark...)

but hey GUy SPY is cool...still love it :)

Some interesting choices here.

Here are mine (in no order):-

FIFA - Totally unplayable
Rise Of the Robots - As above (even on a fast PC)
Streetfighter - Although not as bad as the spectrum version (yes there was a spectrum version!!)
Fears - Yawn
Leisure Suit Larry - Especially that stupid Age chck and those 30min "death" sequences
Oscar - Awful

Erm, there are more, but i can't think of them right now (I should go to bed!)
