Exact 1:1 copy, no. But reimplementation should be no problem IMO.

I believe that all the designs of all the custom chips are copyrighted/patented.

They sure are copyrighted, but copyright applies to implementation, not the idea. If you reimplement the functionality with FPGA, I don't see any copyright problem.

Patents involved have expired long ago, I'd say. IANAPL, though.

The A4000T is also nearly ready for 1MB ROMs.

Nothing so drastic!  :-)

You can gate the *FLASH and *ROMEN signals from the GAYLE chip through a 2-input AND gate (74ls08) to provide a combined chip select signal for a larger EPROM/FLASH combo.

The second 512k appears at $E00000-$E7FFFF, and is searched during a reset for any resident type modules/libraries etc.
