Amithlon and scsi.
« on: August 08, 2003, 04:23:17 PM »
After days of playing around with winuae I have not been able to emulate real scsi and talk with my amiga scsi scanner, which is recognized under wind00z and in bios scan.

I have heard that amithlon has a better scsi emulation, alas there seems to be no where to download or purchase this software anymore as the site is "closed".... Anybody know where I can obtain such emulation software.

Also how hard would it be to "port" over the program from the amiga to win32 code so I can scan from windows?

Thanks in advance for anyhelp.

hi,
i have brought a pc recently.
thrown the amithlon cd in and booted it.
it found my scsi harddisks and stuff without any hassle on a symbios based scsi controller.
my radeon did work as well.
id say, give it a try ;)

I used to have a 2930 scsi card which did not work under AMitlon.  Now I am using a 2940 (narrow) and it works perfect, also my scanner which I have used on the Amiga.

The official site is not closed and of course you can still buy it.

Yes you can still buy it, but the legal status of Amithlon has been questioned by one of the main authors and according to a clause in his software contract, he has withdrawn his IP from Amithlon.  Thus according to him, any sales after he invoked that clause are in breach of contract and thus illegal.

Of course all of the information surrounding this dispute can be found on www.amithlon.net and also on the Amithlon mailing list archives.  This doesn't need to be re-hashed here ;)

The problem is this needs to be settled by a court of law, and no one is ponying up the money to do it.  An out-of-court mediation attempt also failed.

There have been promises by the other author of Amithlon to release an update, but so far that has not materialized.

Actually, the official site is:

http://www.amithlon.com

The Amithlon support site of Harald Frank, one of the developers and self-styled "founder", is:

http://www.amithlon.de

The Amithlon support site of Bernd Meyer, the main developer, was at:

http://www.amithlon.net

The legal status of the product is highly debatable. Not only is the licensing questionable, but also the IP ownership issues between the two authors are also in dispute. There are claims of all sorts on the web and in the mailing lists, but a definitive status won't be reached until and unless the matter is decided in a court of law.

Unfortunately, since an actual court case seems unlikely due to the costs involved, the legal status of the product and the IP will most probably remain under dispute.
