Best amiga side scroll shooter?
« on: October 22, 2010, 06:27:54 PM »
For the purpose of this thread, the only games qualified are side scrolling shoot em ups ala R Type.
Platformers like Turrican don't count.
Scroll up types like Banshee and Xenon 2 don't count.

So whats the best of the best ? Project X ? Apidya ? Disposable Hero ? The R Type's ? Agony ? Silkworm ?

Which ones did you enjoy the most?

Give me some nominations and maybe we can do some polls

Graphically; Agony, Apidya and Project X have to be up there.

But gameplay wise? Some of the classics might fare better. R-Type, Uridium. To be fair I didn't have many Amiga side-scroller shooters though.

Can't think of a single arcade quality horizontally scrolling shootem up. This means gorgeous graphics AND many levels of parallax like Nemesis/Salamander. Most games looked like the efforts of amateurs sadly. The Amiga was capable of an amazing version of Nemesis (Konami)

I used to load R-Type just for the theme song. Fun on the Amiga, but I lost count of the number of quarters I put into R-Type at the corner 7-11.

Agony!  I especially like the end of the first level when you can sit in a particular spot at the boss and just hold down the trigger as long as you like to get points and extra lives.

I really liked Starray, Silkworm, R-Type I&II, and Thexder.
I still need to play Katakis and Project X.

The 1st two that come to mind are RType and Z-Out. I was a big fan (RType) of the arcade game as a teenager, and I was pretty happy with the quality of the Amiga port. It wasnt perfect, but both the graphics and gameplay were pretty well recreated. As for Z-out this is a bit of an under rated gem in my opinion. Well designed levels, and gfx are quite nice, especially as you progress (lots of parallax,etc.). Very much an RType clone, but a well done one, and with enough of it's own ideas to make it good off it's own back.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Apidya, Project-X, Disposable Hero, the R-Types :)

Amig_Nut: Ok, your statement was bit harsh, perhaps.... but true. :( I wish I knew how to program, I'd get some decent shooters for our miggies.... What we really need is an Amiga port of Dezaemon .:hammer:
