Haiku R1/Alpha 1 released

http://www.haiku-os.org/news/2009-09-13_haiku_project_announces_availability_haiku_r1alpha_1

I downloaded both the ISO and the VMware image.   I think its interesting, boots up real fast in a VM (I'm running a Gateway Core 2 Quad though..lol).  Seems very useable, has a browser (lol) and in general is a-ok.  I havent tried any of the downloadable BeOS apps, just played around with it for a little bit.

Much more useable than any Amiga OS we have right now.
PowerMac G5 dual 2.0ghz/128meg Radeon/500gb HD/2GB RAM, MorphOS 3.9 registered, user #1900
Powerbook G4 5,6 1.67ghz/2gb RAM, Radeon 9700/250gb hd, MorphOS 3.9 registered #3143

Good to see Haiku out there finally.  Congrats to the Haiku team.

While I think highly of Haiku, this comment is far from appropriate.

If usablility is your only concern: why don´t you use a mac?
There are some aspects of the Amiga system which we like and want to keep. So I´d be curious as to how Haiku has resemblances with the Miggys more than let´s say Linux.

Also AmigaOS and Morphos both have decent browsers today. So that :laughing: comment didn´t resonate with me either.

Ok, it's a bit buggy but in general I am impressed, logically organised, responsive with a clean feel.  I have my doubts about anyone giving the big three a run for their money but if anyone does it would be Haiku.  But - It desperately needs a UAE port!

Whether you like it or not, it's the truth.

I suggest you use this:

@Persia

There is a UAE port available on Bebits. Dunno if it's been updated recently however.

--edit--

BeOS version of UAE is available here.

I believe the version that shipped with Zeta was more up to date, though that's not really saying much if I'm honest.

I'd like to find a review comparing Haiku with OS4.1/MOS, to see which one of them has better/more features.

Hmm, guess I'll have to give it a try. Such a pity BeOS never became a commercial success.

Explain me one thing though, how does one laugh out *loud* in parentheses?

why dont you figure it out and get back to us.  (LOL)

@persia:
I agree.. a UAE port would be cool.

@whomeverwascryin:

When I said more useable than Amiga OS/MorphOS, I was comparing it to how long its taken them (5 years?) and look where they're at.  Then how long OS4.x and MorphOS has had and where they're at.   Another one is that they're more informational messages about whats going on.   I'm sure this will install on a x86 based Mac Mini...hmmm.   If UAE ends up getting ported, they may have a fan in me.  I know I have a spare x86 based Mac Mini.  :)

@the_leander:

:idea:

Nowhere has anyone said that or implied it.

No one has said that either.

Good for you!

Seriously though, what the hell is with all the defensiveness on this?

I'm glad I found that form, it appears there is a definite need for it in this thread.

What do you mean "will be"? ;)

In terms of reliability it is around the Zeta RC1.3 mark.

In terms of looks... Its more barren then Zeta was, more in line with BeOS which is neither a compliment nor a complaint.

I like where it's going and assuming it gets some power management and wireless I can well imagine this ending up on my EeePC full time.

Dual boot between Haiku and Elive... :afro:

It's an assumption that you aren't about to stop test driving it in the near future ;)
