Title: Favorite/most impressive Amiga game music?
Post by: marcfrick2112 on November 22, 2011, 08:23:01 AM
Hey everyone,

In my humble opinion, what the Amiga can do with sounds and music via little old Paula (poor girl never got an upgrade :( ) is nothing short of amazing. First off, try to explain to a PC person how you play MP3's, MIDI, etc. on a computer with no sound card.... :roflmao:

Soo, I ask this of you:
What is your favorite, or most impressive Amiga game music?

While the game is hampered by no 2-button support (grrr!) Alladin AGA's opening music... wow.. Sure, the music part is only a bit better than on the MegaDrive (Genesis) version.... but then the song is SUNG! I was simply Blown Away.

Certainly, the entire Turrican series has great music.

For some odd reason, I really love the title track from Theatre of Death (Psygnosis) by Mike Clarke... so much in fact, I DL'd that track ripped from the game.

So, any others?

Shadow of the Beast 1, 2, and 3 into musics.
Agony's intro music and the cutscene musics.
Universe's atmospheric music. (Only played the demo at the time.)
Test Drive II intro music.
Leander's intro music.

Geesh.. Never actually realized I liked alot of intro musics to games lol!  Oh yea, one of my favorites is Lemmings 2 The Tribes's intro music lol. Great stuff.

All the Psygnosis games had great sound.  I remember Awesome and Killing Game Show having particularly good sound.  Also, the Cinemaware titles had very good, fitting music.  Overall, it wasn't until about 1995 or 1996 I remember PC games coming close to my Amiga 500 games in the sound department and that was with a $100 sound blaster card!

OH yes, Psygnosis had some great tunes in their games!

And, I forgot the Beast series.... I think 3 had the most 'realistic' sounding music.

Thanks for everyone's input!

RType title screen.

Saying Amiga has no soundcard is a bit of a stretch though. Do pcs with onboard sound also qualify as having no sound card? Not just that, but having DMA is also an advantage vs. pc sound of old. So technically the amiga had/has dedicated sound hardware. Telling a pc person what the amiga can do "without a soundcard" isnt as impressive when you live in reality  :P

For its day the Amiga had good sound, but the sid chip on the c64 is at least (probably moreso) as impressive for its day (give it the same sort of memory as paula has access to and see what it can do).

Obliterator was the first Amiga game I had that I left running just to listen to the in game music (like Cybernoid 2 on the C64).

Aladdin supports 2-button controllers, you can jump with one and either use your sword or throw apples with the other button, but you still had to use space bar to switch between them, or you could choose to use each of the buttons for the two weapons and up for jump. Unfortunately there's no 3-button or CD32 pad support, which would have been welcome.

Some of my favourite sounding games are:

Stardust
Super Stardust
Lionheart
Agony
Dune
SlamTilt
Pinball Illusions
Ruff 'n' Tumble

Hybris's music wasn't especially technically complicated, but the idea to use chiptune-style guitar sounds was genius, it's oh so expressive without having to take up a lot of space :)

Turrican 2 and Turrican 3 are the games in the history of computers and consoles with the best music
no one can discuss that
I think that Chris Huelsbeck was inspired by God when composed those wonderful tunes

I'm against listening to Amiga music on this crappy laptop PC, but here's the first music that truly amazed me: Amberstar intro music. Let it play for a while, until full percussion starts. It's SO f**ng epic!! European RPGs from the 80's and the 90's... no personal computer should be without games like these!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxlH6y-_Cww&feature=related

Don't listen to it in a lame laptop, it loses all it's powerful pumping sound.

While following are taken from demos and not games, they're still impressive:

"Kefmania Theme" - http://aminet.net/mods/demo/kefmania.lha
"1991 Not a Number" - http://aminet.net/mods/demo/1991NotANumber.lha
"Digital Innovations 2" - http://aminet.net/mods/demo/DigitalInnova2.lha
"Echoing" - http://aminet.net/mods/demo/echoing.lha
"Knulla Kuk" - http://aminet.net/mods/rock/KnullaKuk.lha

I couldn't find the link for it, but "AddioElonora" (sp) is another one to look out for.

i know it's not paula or chip generated, but i liked the in game "musak" from diggers CD32.
really nice "Audio Wallpaper" background noise that kinda captured a bit of a echoy underground feeling. all wooshy synths, and then deep into the track, the contrasting pure sound of an electronic squarewave bluring out into reverb, burning out like a guitar riff falling into the sun....

sorry, imagination got the better of me there... :)

Turrican 2   +1, the only Amiga game music in regular rotation on my mp3 player. Really awesome!

Cannon Fodder too.
Also I know it's mostly licensed (is it?) but I love the music in Frontier, a true space opera :)
Speedball 2 loader tune captures the theme of the game perfectly.
Simon the Sorcerer 1, ah, nostalgia...
XP8 intro tune
and many many more I can't remember right now..

Back in the day I recorded the entire Turrican 2 soundtrack onto audio cassette.  It's the only game I ever did that with.  Chris Huelsbeck is a legend.  His R-Type theme was good as well.

But speaking of insanely catchy tunes I think the Robocod music will be with me forever, not to mention Bubble Bobble.  And another one off the wall: Rodland.

Oh and mustn't forget Apidya: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZcT_Kr7tLs

I was working a booth at Comdex or CES 95 flogging Gravis Ultrasound's when a guy wandered in and handed me "Rainbows" and "Turrican" CDs. I tried to give them back saying I wasn't in a position to use his composing services but he insisted I keep them. It wasn't later on into the age of the internet that I clued in he'd composed the music for many of the Amiga games I played years earlier. While I played Turrican and probably others I should maybe be ashamed to say that the music from Hollywood Poker Pro is what still sticks vividly in my mind after all these years for some reason :P.

My professional life has actually led me to work with some of the most famous retro era composers. Again I sometimes didn't find out until years later what their contribution was since I started out after that retro era was over, but it sure is interesting to know.
