PCMCIA slot with Amithlon
« on: March 30, 2008, 10:07:59 PM »
I finally got a PCMCIA network card for my laptop.  It's a Netgear MA401 (which is listed as working with the prism2 drivers on Aminet).  As I also have Amithlon on my laptop, I thought I'd try getting the card to work with it but can't seem to get it to recognize the card.  Does anyone know anyway to get it to work or is there simply no PCMCIA support in Amithlon at all?

You might try some of the newer kernels, and Bernie's latest updates which lets you use linux-drivers for network.

But then, it's been half a decade since I used Amithlon for that last time .....
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

 :boohoo:
I just found the following on the Amithlon-Open Yahoo group.
The first part is written by one ambitious coder (Bilo) in Jan 2007.  The second is the (rather depressing) response from Bernie.

If you want to use an Amiga-side driver, you might "only" need to work
out how to get the memory mapped I/O area accessible for the 68k emulation;
If you are really lucky, that I/O area might even be at an address
already mapped.
On the other hand, the PCMCIA on the A600/A1200, from memory, has all
sorts of properties you won't find in your laptop; Starting with a
fixed address, adding some (apparently subtly broken) ways of controlling
resets, to being the 16-bit ISA variant of PCMCIA (i.e. "real" PCMCIA,
which looks just like an ISA bus to the chips --- your laptop is almost
certainly "CardBus", which looks like a PCI bus). It is extremely
unlikely that you'd have any chance to make a driver work unless you
have source code access, and a reasonably firm understanding of the
various standards.

Hi Mpiva
I know I tried my best, involving everyone that I know that is an expert in hardware but Bernie was right there is no easy way to do this (or maybe no way).
one way that I found is that if the card is an internal (so minipci for laptop) then regardless if the card is wifi or not if you get it recognize it then it should work.
there are ways of adding extra parameters but is not guarantied that will work on encrypted network.
I should do more testing soon as I'm digging up my laptop and start playing again with Amithlon.
For the moment I've been working on helping the KNX on AF side with Amir
We'll see how it goes
Good luck with your testing as well and I know how frustrating can be to have a laptop and not been able to use it wireless (one of the reason why I stopped using Amithlon)

Hi again,

I finally found a card that work. Do not get exited, its not a pcmcia but a normal miniPci for my laptop, but it works.
I am writing right now with wiFi for the first time using Amithlon.
the card is an old intel and using the "prism2" driver works really well.

just plugged in my IBM T30 and followed the driver instruction, rebooted and works.

So if you want / have a minipci slot maybe you want to consider somethig like this.
its not expensive at all (actually less then a PCMCIA)

Well I wanted to let you all know that there is a way :o)

Does it work with the Amiga driver or the Linux one? Also, do you know the model number, PCI ID etc. of this card?

As amithlon has no PCMCIA emulation it cleatly must be the linux side.

Hi,

The card is an Intel M3AWEB referred as well as the Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B as those are the driver for Windows.
However the driver should work with any Prism II chip-set based cards.

For the Amiga side yes the driver is an Amiga driver, in fact is a SANAII Network driver that make the Wifi work.

Here the link for more information
http://aminet.net/package/driver/net/prism2

However don't get confused with the information about the PCMCIA. The PCMCIA work only on A1200 and A600 but not in Amithlon.
On Amithlon it works if you have a PCI card or a MiniPCI (for laptops)

Obviously the Linux side has to recognize the PCI slot etc, but the functionality is made possible from the Amiga driver.
I'm using it with WEP encryption and its only possible with WEP no other authentication possible.

I hope this clear a bit few things.

Let me know if you need more info
