Title: Mediator + LAN + EasyNet
Post by: kreciu on December 11, 2018, 05:41:10 AM
I'm trying to configure my Amiga and one of last things I'm trying to do is to have a nice and stable Internet connection.

I have properly installed Mediator and FastEthernet.device. I installed EasyNet and I'm able to connect to Internet HOWEVER my Amiga will hung up/reset etc. sometimes before I even click "Go Online" or when I disconnect computer  it will just CRASH. I have no idea what to do. Everything else is rock solid.

Any ideas who to improve stability when I'm trying to connect/use Internet? Do you know any good guides etc. PLEASE past a link here.

Hi kreciu,

I have got fastethernet.device working completely stable for a few years here. Is it Realtek 8139 compatible card? I have a Realtek 8139D, Voodoo3 3000, and a SB128 card all working together. If it seems like a hardware fault, you could try re-ordering the cards or run c:pciinfo to make sure no two cards have the same IRQ. Check elbox.com to make sure you have the latest fastethernet.device. I use my old Miami TCP stack, but it also worked in the RoadShow demo as well.

If you have any other questions I'm happy to pop upstairs and crack the 1200T open and have a look for ya!

I was lazy and got this LAN card from Amigakit.com with EasyNet so this should not be a problem.

My Radeon, Spider, SB128 works really nice. I have some really, really old LAN (that I used with AmigaOS4.1) so, I will try it.

BTW. How fast is your LAN card on Mediator. I'm getting like... 50kbps... :). Amazing.

I checked my old LAN card and it works. HOWEVER, only first time. When I start EasyNet and create new configuration then it will connect to Internet without problem, but when I start EasytNet with config. file already saved - computer will crash.

I don't think it is hardware issue. I forgot to write first LAN card also work first time.

At this point if I want to connect to internet I need to delete config. file and start over :(.

Is there any update for EasyNet? Mine is from 2015... BTW. I had the same problem with fresh install of OS3.1.4 (+Mediator).

Is there any easy to configure software to connect to internet. I tried Miami demo, but it doesn't talk to my Netgear router (or I have not idea what and where to input during config.)

Hi,
I have a really early Mediator 1200 - the one where I had to pull and replace the U2 chips after a few months because of a design problem. It was difficult to stabilise, so I blame any card problems on that usually. If memory serves, you also need a really recent pci.device to work with fastethernet.

TCP stacks on Amiga are not easy. I would say roadshow is easiest. To change anything in roadshow, you have to edit config files by hand, but the demo installed and got running really easily. And it does DHCP so that makes things way easier. With Miami I've gotta put a DHCP address reservation in the router because you can only have a static address.

I suggest using and supporting roadshow.  I tried Easynet and Miami with MNI drivers with zorro based NIC's.  Roadshow was the simplest by far to setup and get going and was very fast.   The author is a great guy and responsive to the community.

So, I got Roadshow demo and I'm able to connect to Internet (installation was super EASY!).

EDIT: So, I got full version of Roadshow and... I have similar problem. (Demo worked fine, but it was disconnecting me literally after few minutes, so I could not observe any of my current errors. I was hoping it will just work) This time computer will crash DURING browsing or just stop downloading (eg. from aminet.net it will stop at 33%) and after that I can't access any website. Good think it is way faster then before (when it works!), now I'm getting about 250kbps.

Also I noticed that when user-startup is loaded (Roadshow) my WB with blinks yellow few times (so there is guru, but it is so fast I can even read it) AND if LAN cable is NOT connected to network WB will not load properly.

This is first time I'm setting up LAN on my computer, I finally configured EVERYTHING, and this is last thing I can't figure out.

I want to stream radio over internet :), when I'm typing on Amiga. Most expensive typewriter EVER (with connection to Internet, hopefully!) ;)

BTW. Configuration of Roadshow? There is basically NOTHING to do as far as connection configuration. Really great!

When you see a yellow box like the red Guru, that is classed as "recoverable error" and it usually means that, although the system can continue, it's about time to save all of your work and prepare for the eventual collapse of the OS that is coming. I think there is still a driver problem - either fastehternet.device or incompatibility between fastethernet and pci.device. If the system is stable when not connected to the Internet then it's probably that. AmigaKit.com shows a RealTek card in the photograph so I assume it's supported by the Mediator.

I'd encourage you to run the PCIinfo and make sure the card is not sharing an interrupt with another card. Some cards can share interrupts but I would try to avoid it...

OK. It works! This yellow flash during WBload is whole screen yellow(?), but system is stable. I can finally "browse" internet. Netsurf 3.7 (is there 3.8 for 68k? I can't find it!) works, it is slow but works! My download speed is ~250-300kbps!? NICE.

Now, computer runs for 0.5h playing mp3 in background I can browse internet :).

PS. Thank you for recommending Roadshow. This is really nice peace of software and I don't have to "start" internet connection every time I need it and that speed ;).

Netsurf autobuilds, 3.8 betas and when 3.8 is relesed you will get 3.9 betas here.

https://ci.netsurf-browser.org/builds/amigaos3/

Those are autobuilds, every time when sources are updated script generates new amiga version of Netsurf.

And here you can see what is happened.

I've been using the Netsurf Beta 3.8 from Arti (http://ami-soft.blogspot.com/) for a few months. I seem to remember another person doing an entirely different port (was his name Chris?) that I liked a bit less.

When the whole screen is a solid yellow, it's usually a memory problem. I've had this twice - one cause was actually faulty RAM. The other is when the machine crashes and the remapped ROM image gets corrupted by a crashing program. I also see a yellow screen when booting with an incompatible turbo-board mapper. For instance I was using the MMULib maprom and fastzero, when I should have been using Remapollo because the latter was designed specifically for my Apollo board.

Hope this helps!

OK. I have internet and Amiga is stable. Netsurf 3.8 works, however it takes "only" 5 minutes to load Amiga.org forum, Aminet about 75s. Ibrowse 2.4 demo, Aminet will load in about 10s.

There is something wrong here. It should take about 20-30 seconds to render amiga.org, with Netsurf. Wich versions of render and guigfx libraries you installed?

Or if you downloaded Arti's Netsurf fork, there is no point to use it with real amigas. It is usefull only in emulated enviroments.
