Title: How on EARTH do i get shapeshifter going?
Post by: Leifern on May 26, 2014, 11:44:49 PM
Hello,

I have been trying to get shapeshifter to install an OS for hours now and I have no idea what to do. I could really use some help! I have some 7.5 and 7.6 files (mostly .dsk and anpackaged files). I understand that I need a boot disk or something but I have no idea where to get one. Years ago I ran OS 8.1 on my 060 and I don@t remember there being any problems. Now I am just completely dumbfounded.

I am setting my system up in WinUAE, having connected my real amiga HDD. My amiga is an A1200 with an ACA1232/40mzh (noMMU). I am planning on getting an indivision.

All the guides I have read point to files that are no longer around (MACOS761.lha) or seem to assume knowledge that I sadly do not have. I would be extremely thankful if someone could help guide me through the setup process so that I can enjoy some mac emulation on my amiga again.

Thank you for the fast reply XDelusion, but I have already read the post and it doesn@t really help me at the point where i am now. I have set up the rom and prepareemul, I have done the Graphics setting in shapeshifter and i am ready to install macos onto a partition on my hdd that is to be a dedicated macos partition, but i have no idea how to install the OS.

EDIT:

Is it possible to use the hardfile from that post to copy the OS onto the partition?
(Please excuse me if I am being rudely ignorant here, but most of the Amiga knowhow that I had a few years ago is completely gone..)

Sorry, I'm not of much more help honestly, I've not experimented with Shapeshifter since I posted on that link I shared...

...and have formatted that Amiga's hard drive since then.

I'm sure someone will come around with the right answers .

I have started from Cammys diskfile now and has my partition set up as a device. When to OS boots it asks if i want to format my partition and i say yes. It is a very slow process.. :P I would love to somehow copy the os from the diskfile onto the partition, as i have read that using an actual partition is faster then a diskfile, and my amiga isnt extremely fast. :)

And I must say that this diskfile is cool. Very nice work by cammy! One day I too will become a productive member of the amiga community. Mark my words! ;)

I'll give you one tip: Run your hardfile from CF card on PCMCIA port, it's super fast compared to FFS HD.

Post by: Leifern on May 27, 2014, 08:53:12 AM
I do not have a cf pcmcia card so I won't be able to do that now, but I'll keep it in mind for future purchases.

What i really want to do is install/copy the OS to my partition.

A strange thing is happening all of a sudden: The mouse pointer is going crazy while on the mac side. I've tried restarting. It happened while formatting the partition and has been going since. Any ideas?

It could be easier use an existing hardfile.

I guess i can keep using Cammys hardfile until i fully get my head around how this emulator works again. :)

Now I just have to get agaboost to work and install some games ;)

Ok, sorry for asking one more, possiblyy silly question:
How do i move files to the mac?

When using cammys diskfile i initializen my DH3: on the mac side, moved all the files over and rebooted without the diskfile. It worked! Now i boot from my partition, but i am unable to move files to the macside. I have moved mac-handler to the correct place, started shapeshifter and gone back to workbench and vlicked MAC from the machandler folder. "already mounted". My fh3 has always remained on the desktop, usable as an amiga hd. But it is now also usable on the mac side. No files from the mac side is visible on workbench and no files from the amiga side is visible in finder. Am i missing something?

Also, i am unable to get agaboost running. I am on an ACA 1232/ec 40mhz. Ive tried pal hires and laced, 256colors and refresh2 and 3. I feel stupid and would GREATLY appreciate any help or nods in the cirrect directiln.

Sorry for the spelling, i am on my phone and the keyboard is not agreeing with me.

MacHandler creates Icon on desktop with the same name as MacOS HD name, so make sure MacOs hd name side is different then your partition, I'm not sure if that's possible.
You could created hardfile to transfer your files and mount it as your second drive.
In the MAC handler icon's INFO, change the ToolType to ACTIVATE=2 and STARTUP=2
1 is for first boot drive, 2 is for the second.

Thank you! I changed the name of the HD of the partition on both sides, rebooted and it actually worked. I don't understand how, but I was able to move some games over and decompress them. I even managed to boot into the OS using AGAboost. Everything is moving PAINFULLY slow, but it works. I don't see how it can be possible to play a game on this setup, but it is fun to have MacOS 7.6.1 running inside the Workbench.

I have seen people playing Wolfenstein on a similar setup to mine, but I was just barely able to get Masters of Orion crawling along.

Try downloading a different rom, they may not be all compatible. I have a quadra 650 rom, it works with 7.6 and 8.0.

Hmm...  Are you sure the "similar" setups were running AGA, and not a video card?  That makes a HUGE difference to Mac emulation.  Trying to make AGA run even a 16 color Mac is an exercise in trying to run your desktop through a slideshow.

@illwrath

Shapeshifter isnt a slideshow on aga, you can play games perfectly, there some videos from Cammy running photoshop on amiga 600.

I tried using a different rom (quadra), but it made little or no differenece. I was using LC III. The OS is running smoothly, but processing is slow, on 2-4 colors, however 256 (for running games) is just completely unusable. About 1-5 fps. I remember getting great results with 060 and RTG, having no problems running Settlers II or similar games, but off course I'm not surprised there is a big difference to 030 AGA.

I would love to get some older games running tough. Finale (for musical notation. Of which there are no good alternatives on 3.x) seems usable, which is good. It runs in two colors and   quite smoothly.

On AGA, a turbocard with MMU greatly helps speeding up the graphic refresh, I remember that on my 1200 with a Blizzard 1230 a 256 colors screen was fast enough for most games, using the Savage driver.
Since your CPU lacks an MMU, I suggest you try all the alternative AGA video drivers which don't require an MMU, like AGABoost or AmigaAGA-EVD, you might be able to get an usable 16 colors screen:

Ok, I'm going to necromance this thread for a bit. I keep forgetting how this thing works every time I try to set it up. It's always years between each try, and this time the insanely helpfull hardfile made by Cammy is nowhere to be found. :(

So I'me setting things up on winuae now, on a CF-card that is going in my A1200. At the moment I still have the aformentioned ACA1232 but I am in the marked for something faster so mac-emulation is on the table again. :)

I have the System 7.6.1 CD and ISO and I am trying to get the OS installed in shapeshifter through workbench 3.1 on Winuae. It's turning into a bit of a puzzle. I am able to get the iso unto winuae and mounted in WB 3.1 but as CD0:???. I'm assuming the amiga is confused about the filesystem. So I thought that shapeshifter might make sense of it but shapeshifters "BOOT FROM: CD ROM" makes no difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

On O30/40Mhz and AGA don't try to install it with 256 color, that is for sure (later you can try it but...). It will make things way faster. Try 16 colors.

Installation from floppies works the same as any Mac from the time you start Shapeshifter? IF you don't have floppy in the drive Shapeshifter/Macrom will ask for disc from which you will install MacOS. The same with CD, you should be able to boot from CD, IF everything is configured in Shapeshifter properly (and there is not that much... actually!).

Thank you for the response, Kreciu. I don't have to OS on floppies sadly. It is the setup og the CD I am enquiering about really. I don't have a CD-rom on my Amiga, so I am setting everything up in winuae, and I cannot figure out how to do it so that shapeshifter sees the CD (workbench sees it fine, but as CD0:???).

Seems to run rather well on this 030 with MMU:

Had it running as well many years ago..I think it was 7.1 maybe but I can’t remember now.  I have an Emplant Deluxe board and an  AMax II+ board.  I wonder if either of those would make it easier to run Shapshifter.

I do think performance may be lack of MMU, however I believe ACA have a kickrom function and if you extract your rom,  modify with supplied utility, and kick that you can eliminate prepearemul.

I've managed to boot now, using a boot disk. And I've managed to initialize the HDD partition. It seems that Shapeshifter sees the CD's just fine, just none of the System 7.6.1 ISO's I've found. The system recovery CD shows up in the mac without problem. So I guess it IS all set up correctly, It's just the CD images that are either corrupt or in a format that my shapeshifting Amiga fails to understand.

EDIT: And now I've managed to install System 7.5.3 without trouble. It seems there was something with system 7.6.1 that made things go belly up. None of the 4 iso's I found worked. I'll make sure to save these files that I've used and upload them somewhere now that Cammy's hdf is lost.

don't bother, I wasted a year of my life getting that to run on my Amiga 3000 with a Warp 040 board and while I suceeded in getting the mac to boot it was quite pathetic.
You can buy a working mac that will be faster for $300.

All classic MacOS files can be found via this link:

http://lowendmac.com/2013/classic-mac-os-downloads-and-updates/

Apple itself hosts up to OS8.x and it is available to download for free, but they tend to rearrange files so it can be a bit of a hunt.

In regards to performance, try experimenting with different drivers. It can make a huge difference.
Disregard comments suggesting it's not worth it. As many users and videos show it can be very similar to an equivalent specced Mac (the myth that it's faster is inaccurate, but the difference is in the realm of %25).

Hello, actually I'm in the same state. I managed to configure my  A1200/060 that Shapeshifter boots to the blinking ? disk symbol to  insert a bootable media. I want to install a 7.6 system first, because I  need it on my A1200/030, too. These are my plans:

- Using 2nd CompactFlash card with 300 MB Amiga partition for Shapeshifter folder and storage (install ISO), the rest is the HFS/HFS+ partition
- 16 GB card for System 7.6, one boot partition, two or three other partitions.
- 32 GB card for System 8, one boot partition, three or four other partitions.

So I need the system tools disk for partitioning first, but I haven't found it yet.
Second  problem, I don't have a CD-ROM on my A1200. I tried with some  ISO-mounting with the file-handler, but I presume my AsimCDFS wasn't  properly installed. It's a long time ago; my Amiga 1200 was defective  and got repaired a month ago. Now, after 12 years I can use it again :)  Of course, some memories have gone missing, especcially because I never used a  CD-ROM on the A1200.

So, does have anyone ideas and a source for the Mac's hard drive partitioning disk?

The 16gb and 32 gb may give your problems:

http://lowendmac.com/2014/maximum-hard-drive-size/

Download this iso:

https://archive.org/details/cu-amiga-super-cd-rom-21

It has mac hardfiles and system 7..  enough to get you going, provided you can get them off the CD and on to your amiga.  I did it with a real CDROM in my A1200 and A4000.

I used it on an Amiga 2000 with PP&S 040/28 and CV643D video card and it ran quite excellent.
