Title: Report button ?
Post by: lempkee on February 03, 2004, 07:48:40 PM
ok , you all probably have seen my posts in the moderating technique thread.

anyway here is a suggestion.

Make an Report button, ie , report to moderator if you feel offended and if so why etc.

make it in a way that wont make people hit it just for fun, ie an direct PM to moderators (all?) and it has to hold an message.

maybe an absolutely dull idea, but i think it would have been affiective in the way of getting moderators to jump in fast enough.

(something ann.lu has needed since day 1 :P)

cheers

Thanks Lempkee,

Very constructive input and I'll see if I can add it to the upcoming Xoops engine.

So how would it work? would it be one report button per person? per post? per thread?

wayne:

thinking about this, it does work pretty good for other things like ebay etc, but i am sure they get alot of spam/crap and fake hits etc, but then again i dont know for sure.

ofcourse this report button must be for regged users only/logged in , though u should be able to log in while ur in the report place.

Whilst it is a good idea in principle, I think it would probably be open to abuse.  We can already PM moderators if we are offended by a thread.  I think that a specific "report" button might encourage people to fool around with it a bit and swamp moderators with complaints.  Not necessarily maliciously, but when a quick option is there, people may be more inclined to click and report the more minor things that irritate them.

There are always problems with any suggestions, though.  I am not aiming to dismiss this one.

This happens ... sometimes ... but most of the time people just post a comment to the thread/comment/whatever they don't like.

Which is probably the best idea in most situations

Maybe you could have a regular announcement (or, more drastically, a header to all posts) encouraging people to contact a moderator if they are bothered by a thread, rather than the specific button proposed by Lempkee?

abou27: seriously i doubt that will make it any effective, need something we can report fast .

(if ur fast enough then people wont be able to reply to troll bait etc)

cheers

I don't think it's a bad idea at all. It's left to the user's discretion if they want to report a post or just reply to the thread, PM would also still be an option, and if it does get abused it's a little work to remove it but I think it's worth a try.

lempkee,

I see your point about wanting to report a problem quickly but whatever option you choose, you are still dependent on a moderator reading it at their convenience (ie. may not always be somebody available to deal with complaint).  I just think, that if someone has to go through more to make a complaint, it will make them think twice (and so reduce whinging) and will discourage irresponsible troublemakers who invariably seek out the easiest ways of annoying others.

However, fundamentally, it is up to all users of the site to take responsibility for their own actions and try not to become involved in mud slinging, destructive threads.

I think this site is very well moderated - there seem to be fairly heated arguments that are allowed to proceed and moderators exercise their powers to block threads quite rarely - this suggests that much thought goes into the moderation.  As such, I think we can safely assume that most of the edited posts deserved to be edited.  As someone already said, everyone makes mistakes and so there will be some poor decisions either way - this is something that we have to live with if we want the site to be moderated (I would have thought that very few people would favour no moderation!)

Blimey, someone should have stopped me ages ago!
I shall shut up now.

It's on my list to create a Xoops 2.x module which allows people to submit forum abuse reports to the moderators, much the way that they can report broken links in the links area.  Should be simple for Moderators to maintain and fair to all.  Of course, the people causing the trouble won't appreciate it, but we don't appreciate the trouble they cause, so we'll consider it even.

Hum, totally useless (imho)
(and perhaps it would be used against me..)

But it would be nice to have a huge red PANIC button on the screen though!

Is it a lot of effort (for you) to do a `test` ?

Er,  just to see?

- Oh,  hold on i`ll just stick a red thing on my monitor on/off button... -
 :-D

Sry, i May have picked it up wrong...

But , I used the word PANIC to replace the word REPORT, as i saw that it was basically the same thing. (imho)..if this confused you or others then, this reply  will hopefully clear it up.

I dont have anything against the idea as such. I was just thinking on the effort verses the usefulness balance.

Report buttons are common on some other forums i go to like www.jackarse.co.uk
It is very effective, and saves a lot of silly arguments and flames, because you simply tell the moderator what is bugging you and they (hopefully) sort it out, rather than the offender
