@RiP

Why? Just get an accelerator card or research installing a Vampire 500!

The only simple upgrade I know of is replacing the 68000 with a 68010, which provides a very modest improvement and presents a few incompatibility issues.
I have done that before, and saw very few issues, but the improvement is barely noticeable.

Despite the already mentioned upgrade to a 68010, there are probably a hand full of accelerators that plug directly into the CPU IC socket and there replace the 68K by a whole card. They have been designed primarily for the A500, not the A2000.

One way or another: it's really not worth doing. A much better option is to get a full-fledged accellerator for the CPU slot.

Thanks, then 68010 is max? I need something cheap =/

Get a PC.

68010 is like $5 bucks and provides about a 5% speed improvement.  Want any more than that go hit up ebay or Amibay and buy yourself a proper accelerator. :p

If you don't have fast ram then getting some will improve the CPU speed.

A 14mhz 68010 will get you a few more percent (it won't run be able to run at 14mhz all the time though, so it's not double the speed).

http://aminet.net/package/docs/hard/14MhzA500.lha

Personally I'd either wait for Individual computers to make an ACA2000 (I originally asked him about doing it in the 1990's), try to pick up an old 020 accelerator or wait for a vampire.

Nothing for an Amiga 2000 is cheap.

If you can find a used one, Supra's Turbo28 (clocks at 28 MHz), with it's buffering, gives a very substantial acceleration.  It is not a single chip, it plugs into the acceleration slot.  Like the original 68000, it is 16-bit and clocks 4 times faster than stock (about a 3.5 X speed boost).  Also, unlike more expensive 32-bit accelerators, memory will still be limited to the original 16-bit map (8MB Fast, 2MB Chip).  I have an A2000 equipped with one and like it quite a lot.  The only incompatibility I have noticed is that Bridgeboards don't like it.  It is the same board for the A500 and A2000 and will work with either computer.  Those sold for the A500 came with a side-car case (removeable).

If you find an ICD AdSpeed accelerator (14 Mhz), run away.  They are unstable and have many incompatibilities.  They do, however, mount in the CPU socket to replace the 68000.

+1 about the 68010.  I use them in A500s, and with some Fast ram, give just a barely noticeable speed boost.

I've got a supra turbo28, and the speed is exactly what you'd expect of a 68000@28Mhz - with none of the incompatibility issues
however there is a 16k sram cache on the board that the supra is dependent on. and this seems to have problems with zorro2 fast ram above 4meg (nearly typed 4gig by autopilot!)
so the GVP HC8+ and SupraTurbo combo i have will only run at 4meg fast. i can't remember what happens if you go above the ram allowance, if it simply doesn't boot, or the accelerator disables itself as it isn't able to take control of the bus from the original 68k... but i remember that i had problems with 8meg fast for some reason with that accelerator.

if you're after a cheap speed boost, check amibay or ebay for a 68020 card i think is going to be the best return for your money.

Someone on Amibay is selling the faster clocked version of the 68k (for 14mhz speed hack found on aminet)

Yes, but this alone doesn't buy you anything. No matter which clocking you use, the 68K will still only run with 7Mhz (if you make no other modifications, that is). The clocking just tells which clock frequency the chip is able to work at, but not which clock frequency is actually used. That's still up to the mainboard, and for the Amiga, it's still "snail speed", aka 7Mhz. Unless it's pluged into some sort of accelerator.

Yes this is probably a better alternative to the 14mhz speed hack found on Aminet.
