WS500XXX Scala Rackmount System
« on: September 23, 2018, 05:07:45 AM »
The other day I dug out some retro equipment from my basement and came across this old open frame 2 post server rack that I purchased in 2005 when I was doing Cisco training. The old Cisco equipment was long gone, but I forgot all about this other item I mounted into the rack. That item was a Scala rackmount box that had an Amiga CD32 and an SX-1 inside. So, today I decided to open the case and everything looks great. I took some pictures and thought I'd share them here as I didn't really find much info on this through Google.

I'll definitely be hooking this up tonight and see how it runs.

Nice find. Can you provide amiga.resource.cx with good pictures and specs for their database? Also, the pictures at bboah are very bad too.

Whoa.  Kind of makes it hard to access the optical drive from inside there, though. ;)

I thought I had seen all of Scala's brainstorms. Obviously I missed one.

scala units were mainly for display purposes only..I remember my dentist had an Amiga running Scala slide shows all day about dental care etc. over & over & over lol so you wouldn't really have to access the CD unit that often at all unless you wanted to change the advertising on a daily basis then that would be a pain

I wanted to fire this up today but too many things were going on so I didn't get a chance. Tomorrow I'm going to hook up my 1084 and test out the unit. I don't recall how long ago I actually got it (2006 maybe) but my friend who is much more knowledgeable with Amigas (I was a C64 geek) than I recalls we did test it out back then and it worked fine. I'll post some more screenshots tomorrow of the system running, etc. I hope it works as it does look like a really neat system.

@klx300r: My friend who I call an Amiga guru :) essentially said the same thing you mentioned above, so yea it seems like these were mostly for displaying presentations on closed circuit TV, in offices like your dentist, etc...

Ok.

Just finished testing out the unit with my friend (Anthony from the Guru Meditation) and we took some pictures. I'm glad Anthony was here as he is much more knowledgeable regarding the hardware and OS, so we got some good pictures showing the system info, etc.

Upon our testing we confirmed the following.

The system seems to work fine.
The SX-1 has 8MB Fast RAM and a 250MB Hard Disk as well.
Apparently, the CD32 is PAL and this was the case with these particular SCALA rackmount units.
