Hey there

I want to try Amiga emulation on my PC (athlon xp 1800 with winxp) mainly for creating music. I have absolutely no idea what I need to download or what I have to once i've downloaded it...

Can anyone give me a tutorial on how to get an amiga emulator up and running?

Thanks!

It seems that you don't have an real Amiga ?

Best way would be to get Amiga-Forever, which contains all
you need.

If you got a real Amiga you could use the free version of UAE
with a ROM-file generated from the Amiga.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

No i don't have a real amiga  :-D

But I got amiga forever and it works great.. all I need now is some music making software. I'm presuming there are legal technicalities with getting it from the internet?  :-?

Jah, OctaMED SoundStudio is wicked. You'll be makin' choons 'till ya ears bleed!!!!

In other words, I use it and find it a dream for music on the Amiga. It can be a bit of a pain with MIDI, but you'll figure it out.

And yes, for that unmistakable Amiga sound you will need a real Amiga, the Emu's can't get it right. Non linear DAC's and all that... :-D

If you want good Amiga audio, you need an Amiga. Even with a large sound buffer, UAE's sound output is really nasty. It's also really hard to "play along" using the keyboard because the timing's so dodgy.

My A1200 copes great with OctaMED Soundstudio (version 1 of which is now freeware) and it cost me £60  :-D

That way you also get the secret Amiga X-factor.

(I'm just wondering outloud here then when I ask if anyone knows: Will Soundstudio run on A1/OS4?)

 :-)

They're right. I used to attempt it on my 1.4XP with a GIG of ram, SB live and it STILL would sound crappy from time to time. I've had better luck with just using OctaMEDSS for PC, but it's crap compared to the original.  ;-)

Personally, I'd like to see it have full AHI support. It would make it run a bit better on my Amithlon box. I'm sure there will be an OS4 version. *drools* :-o

Soudstudio isn't so great, at least if working with huge modules and 16 bit samples.

- With 16 bit samples the volume can be set ONLY to 4-5 values; these values are not fixed, but they depend from the track volume, so that you have to find out by yourself for each samples what these values are. Also, because of this it's NOT possible to make decent volume slides, and if you find that a sample  would sound right with a volume between two values, you have to directly boost or reduce the sample.

- When using large samples, saving is painfully slow on a 030/50: you'll have to wait 2-3 minutes to save a 4 megs or bigger module. The loading routine is strangely faster.

- When saving a module as an aiff file, the volume is low even if the volume slider in the mixing windows is set to maximum.

I've seen that there's a patching system available for Octamed, it uses assembly programs instead of arexx and it can perform actions many times faster than Arexx. Maybe it could be used to (at least partially) fix these issues.
Anyway, Digibooster Pro looks much nicer, pity that the same last version that was released some years ago is now twice as expensive.
