Amiga games on GP2X
« on: July 31, 2007, 04:35:01 PM »
Got my GP2X this morning and one of the first things I did was set up UAE4All. I'm seriously impressed with the performance. Here is a Quicktime movie of me playing one of my favourite Amiga games Nebulus on the GP2X. As you can see it runs just as smoothly as on a real Amiga :-D

Note - the file is about 40MB so it would be best to download it before playing.

Ive had one for a while now and my verdict is, its very good.  I use it every day, unlike my DS.

-Much of 8-16, even 32bit gaming history in your hand.
-As well as some pretty good homebrew.
-Media playing ect.

Battery life can be short but so what get 4 or more good AA NiMH, (theyre dirt cheap) and just cycle the cells.

This has actually inspired me to order one. Never thought about them before but they look as though they really have come on in leaps and bounds. Hopefully it will be here tomorrow and amiga, c64 emu is good

How does UAE4All compare to PSPUAE?  Anyone have both?
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

If the two were based on the same source code then UAE4All would be slower.

The PSP has a 333MHz MIPS R4K and the GP2x has 250MHz ARM9, no contest.

Neither should be able to run at full speed (Hell the 733MHz Intel Celeron XBox struggles at times)

From what I can tell:

UAE4all = UAE 0.8.22
PSPUAE  = E-UAE 0.8.29-WIP3

As you can see the UAE4ALL version is based on source about 4 years OLDER than PSPUAE.

During that period the compatibility has gone up INCREDIBLY but the CPU overhead has also gone up.

I have PSPUAE, give me a game and I'll give you a frame rate with zero frame skip.

I have both and much prefer using UAE4ALL. Mostly because the psp screen has terrible motion blur when running 2D games. Both emulators are very comparable in speed despite the gp2x having a slower processor it is from a completely different architecture so megahertz to megahertz comparisons dont stand up. Also UAE4ALL now uses the cyclone arm asm 68k core. Many features have been stripped from UAE4ALL such as savestates and extra memory support so that helps speed it up also. the gp2x also has UAE2X which is based on e-uae but that requires more work before it is as useable as UAE4ALL or PSPUAE.

Proper Movies - GP2X supports a few formats DIV-X and X-Vid are the main and they run perfectly with auto sizing so if they are really small or realy big they still fit on the screen.

The amiga emulator is still being worked on and theres a new version due out soon with some bugs removed that stopped turrican 3 and shadow of the beast working.

Also the current version does not support Ham modes (previous versions did)so theres issues with colours in some games. However this is also being worked on.

Most games that are working are full speed.
