Playing .adf files directly from hard disk?
« on: June 05, 2007, 10:29:18 AM »
hello all.
As you may know I'm new in this new amiga world and I'm trying to make my experience more enjoyable with the computer. I have a new question:
It is possible to play .adf games directly from HD or CF from the A1200? Or it must be played from disks (previously converted to adf to disk)??
thanks!

The quick answer is "Yes" as some can be unpacked to a part of your RAM called RAD and to a Virtual Floppy drive.

Have a read of this thread as you might find it to be of interest :-)

EDIT - and look into what duesi said :-D

WHDload aint much use for playing ADF'S, If I remember right there was a bit of software on aminet that mounted the ADF image. Can't at this moment think what the program was called but I'm sure someone passing will fill you in. :)

Software which mounts the ADF won't be much help unless the software you're running is system-friendly and will run from the RAD drive to which you write the ADF. This will not be the case for most games.

if you still want to mount .adf you can use for eg. FMS

Better sorry than worry.

You can too use the xfs filesystem that allows you to mount several types of image files from adf to .isos, sinclair ql images among others.
It works perfectly for me mounting adfs in my desktop a1200.

As was said if you want to play game ADFs you are better off getting WHDload.  You can use FMS to mount the ADF as a FFx: device much as DFx: but the image has to be a standard AmigaDOS format, and if you know Amiga games you would know that over 95% of games are NonDOS type that load directly from the boot block so that won't work!  Get WHDLoad!
Going Bananas over AMIGAs since 1987...

Looking for Fusion Fourty PNG ROMs V3.4?

I just found a package on AmiNet called diskimage.lha which sounds like it lets you mount .ADFs and compressed disk images as virtual disks with device names like DI0:

I haven't yet tried it, but supposedly it works on Amiga OS versions 2.0.4 and newer. I'm going to try it on my A2000 or A1200 soon. They're both taken apart for maintenance right now.

Theres some other package on AmiNet that claims to do the same thing on OS4.

If you are infact looking for a work around it is sorta possible using WHDLoad.  You need a piece of software for your computer that lets you open the adf's as if they were folders.  (Can't remember its name now but I've got it in the house will put up a link later).  The software will only let you view some adf files.  It doesn't work with NDOS disks images.  (Like Mortal Kombat).

I used this method for Monkey Island 2 as my originals were dead, btw you need a CD drive on yer Amiga.

1: Install WHDLoad on the Amiga
2: Get the Game Installer (in my case Monkey Island 2) and install it.  The installer will copy the files it needs to run the game before looking to the disks for the original game files.  You will have to start the installation then once its looking for the game disks quit.
3: On your PC open the adf files and copy out all the juicy files.
4: Burn to a CD
5: Copy from CD to the directory on the amiga were you installed the game (In the case of Monkey Island 2 there was an additional folder called 'data' that the game files needed put into).
6: Run and enjoy yer game.

Of course its easier to get a hold of a few floppies and use adf2disk on the amiga. Only take 20-30seconds to write a disk.

EDIT: I found the software called ADF Viewer on my pc but can't find it again on the net.  If anyone want it let me know and I'll e-mail it.

I downloaded and installed diskimage by Thore Böckelmann on my OS3.9 Amithlon a couple weeks ago. It works nicely. The only possible disadvantage it may have is that it doesn't have a GUI. It is all run via CLI.

A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G
AROS - 80 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, P4-3.2GHz
