OT: Men of Valor: Vietnam - wowowow
« on: February 17, 2003, 03:32:07 PM »
Just heard about this upcoming game from the good people at 2015.

It's a first person shooter based on the Vietnam war (duh!) and made by the fabulous 2015 team, who created Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault.

Won't be out until 2004, though  :-(

Read the press release here and for screenshots go here.

I can't wait to see something new from these guys, after EA screwed up any chance of a successful continuation of MOHAA by firing 2015 and releasing Spearhead (MOHAA Expansion Pack), a buggy, n00bish and way overpriced heap of dung.

Now, something like *this* for OS4 would be killer  :-P

Looks quite nice, long wait though  but could be worth it with the old MOH team behind it.

My thoughts exactly

There is another game of the same genre about to be released called Vietcong
Multiplayer demo is available, it's not bad.

Cool...do you get to massacre the innocent villagers of Mai Lai? Or to use Geneva convention banned flechette weapons on civilians? Or destroy a rainforest using experimental defoliants laced with dioxin just because your troops are ill-trained conscripts who can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag?

I have the Vietcong demo, though I can't really say that I like it very much. I'm not into tactical stuff, which is what most wargames are now, unfortunately. Call me simple, but I prefer not to have to worry about formations and controlling a whole squad etc.
What has got me hooked on MOHAA, as opposed to Quake or whatever other FPS (I can't be arsed to fight monsters and superheroes and whatnot) is the atmosphere of it, you really feel like you're there in the 40's with your M1 Garand, a few nades and a Colt .45 among your "band of brothers", I hope they do the same with Men Of Valor.

Hehe When I started playing MOH:Frontline, I said it would be cool to make a Vietnam game. Though in a way it isn`t cool at all. Still a be uncomfortably close for somepeople, if you get what I mean.

There are those of us who consider Vietnam to be the final betrayal of the citizens of this country.

We were not in support of this gastly beast. Our leaders knew what was best however. And now we are still paying the price for that humilating display of military power.

There is nothing "Valorous" about Vietnam. It was a sin against humanity.

As long as they allow the player to kill anything that moves it will be a good game.

That's pretty sick, really. I wouldn't want the new Amiga to try and use this sort of game as a selling point.
WWII games are one thing, as it is further in the past, and was a more straight forward "good" against "evil" fight. Vietnam was a horrific war that massacred hundreds of thousands of vietnamese and many many young American conscripts, and a war which most people now realise to be utterly futile. It's going to be hard for a game to portray that one sensitively or realistically (unless the last few missions consist of you frantically running away).

@Cluke
I agree although not with your point about WWII. Time doesn't diminish the horror and travesty of war. Regardless of when a battle took place, it's still morally repugnant to dish it up as entertainment.

I'm getting a little sick and tired of developers abandoning all moral reason and cashing in on humanity's darkest hours for the sake of  "entertainment". Even more depressing is the vast number of willing purchasers for such muck. Can someone please tell me what exactly is so fantastic about "killing everything that moves"? And please, nobody try to use the highly insulting argument that these are anti-war games. They're nothing of the kind. They're all out gore-fests which show all of the brutailty of combat but none of the real-life consequences. You don't get three lives in the real world.

Thousands of innocent people died on both sides of the Vietnam war  - this was less than forty years ago. There was nothing remotely entertaining about it.

Yes the game will have some cool equipment, and the possibility of airstrikes (probably), but
as people have been saying it wasn`t a very clean war. Not that WWII was, but Vietnam was just
chaos. Drugged up Americans with M16s against civilians arms with kitchen knives and soup bowl. I`m
not sure I want this game.

I like realism in games, but if this were realistic it would be disgusting.I bet the Americans win in the end.
