So far I really don't have any gripes. Just about everything I normally use is here. I am sure this was a LOT of work. I think you all have done a great job. Glad to see it up and running.
-
I like the old amiga.org much better than this. This new format makes it much more difficult to find things.

Give yourself time to adapt to things and also wait for the site (which is a work in progress) to get finalised before deciding it is more difficult.
I've only been using it a day and I am already finding it quite easy to navigate. :)

Hmm... me no likee...
I tend to agree with ferrellsl... Very tricky to get a good 'overview' of what's going on...
Part of the reason I don't visit EAB much is that (while it does sometimes have some useful info) it's not very user-friendly or appealing to look at. The old Amiga.org was just right.
There's more to Amiga.org than the forum, but these days a lot of sites (for reasons we all know) seem to migrate to these 'generic' forum based layouts and lose a lot of what made them great places to visit...
I've just signed up to the 'other' Amiga site - the one that looks a bit like the old Amiga.org :-) Feels like I'm back home already! :-(
I don't think I'll be visiting amiga.org very often now, since I need to give my eyes (and brain!) a break!
Just my $0.02 - no offence to the mods and the hard work they've put in (I know - I've been there!)
Cheers,
Mike.

I guess you didn't pick up the part about it being a work in progress eh?
Only the forum has been ported. The site is in beta. Much work remains outstanding.
Oh well, I guess there's only so many times this message can be repeated.
Haste is waste, patience is a virtue and all that.
-
For some reason the new site feels more cramped, despite there being less stuff on-screen. The new layout is going to take a little getting used to, but this shoudln't be too hard given that the layout is pretty logical.
I'm glad to see the new site up and running though.
Hans
-
May take a little "getting used to." But let's keep in mind that more work has probably been done in the past 7 days on Amiga.org than in the past 7 years on Amiga.com. -Dave
-
No problems here. The layout looks ok, forum works nicely and the rest will no doubt follow.
As always, new software with a new look requires some getting used to, but all in all I think it's an improvement.
-
I like the look of the new Amiga.org. I haven't tried browsing with Ibrowse yet. However, it looks good with Firefox.
-
I wish the latest posts were on the front page by default. And I do like new appearance. It is fresh.
-
I agree, the most active top 10 posts should be on the front page - it's all I ever used!
-
Looks just like a standard forum.. Where is the news ?
-
Now there seems to be news items too, but I need to scroll down to see them, which sucks big time IMO. Could recent threads be made in more compact form like it used to be? I liked the way that you can see both recent threads and news items with one look on page without need to do anything.
-
Hey guys, it's looking better already!
It's improved a lot since I last looked about 10 hours ago!
-
I must admit , the new design is growing on me, especially with the addition of the recent update its just about as easily navigated as the old one, but wheres the hidden staff only porn section gone to?
-
I see it says 'beta' in the logo. Is this a joke or something?
-

No one, including apparently you, was bothering to read the continual "we're working on things" explanations that I spent about 8 hours total posting in the forums, so it makes sense.

Shows you're working hard though; the place has gone from looking pretty default to shaping up just like the good old a.org
-

*holds up hand*
I read and understood it. :D
-
mm, it looks ok, but a little too much "white space".
But then, I'm using IBrowse so maybe it's missing the CSS page layout? I haven't checked on the PC yet.
One little annoying thing; I had to click on the submit button underneath the Quick Reply box, which brought up the page "The following errors occurred with your submission:
The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters." before I could post a reply. The normal reply buttons didn't work, just leaving a ghosted reply box.
Hope that helps.

Putting a big 'beta' logo up really makes any website look stupid. I never said I didn't read any of the posts.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, ... :D

Exactly what I was thinking, also I am not too keen on the retro C64 lettering in the banner
-
I like the new layout, looks nice and fresh.
Looks and works great on my iMac.
:)
-
The new skin is better
-
I am not too keen on the retro C64 lettering in the banner
I agree. The C64 lettering is lame. People who like that horrible blocky font are the same people who think the Amiga died in the 1980s and never upgraded. In reality my AmikitOS looks much better than my WindowsXP OS. So let Amiga.org use a normal font.

How you reached that conclusion is beyond me.
I just like it because it is cool. It's a design thing. A bit like Marmite. You either love it or hate it. :p
-
Ahem, topaz is the de facto Amiga font, lovingly written into every Kickstart. How can you not appreciate that?
Plus, what the heck is "AmiKitOS" ? Last time I checked it was simply called AmiKit. Not to denigrate the considerable work put into polishing it, but I think you'll find it's vanilla AmigaOS 3.9 with a wide variety of patches and AROS backports.
-edit-

I think the logo looks great. I also have in my posession 3 expanded A1200's, all of which have at least a 68040 processor. Two towers, one with a BlizzardPPC/BVisionPPC with 256MB of 60ns RAM, the other Apollo1240/Mediator/Voodo3000. Then there's an 800MHz G4 based A1.
In what sense is that "never upgraded" ?
-
seems like a fresh update but the old site was easier to navigate....
-

I'll gladly grant you that, save for the fact that the old site had about 1/10th the feature set of this one.
Just like the Amiga itself, can't make it better without it getting more complicated. No matter how hard you try.
Wayne
-
Wow!!!! I spend some days off and when I get back the house is upside down !! :)
I´m kind of lost in the new site, but it is quite pretty. I like it !!
(maybe I should change my avatar too... )
Congratulations!
... Is there a manual anywhere? :D
-
I'd find it hard to believe the new A.org will have as much of an appealing "feel" or look to it as the old, but it *is* getting better every day. Fonts are too small (as per the obligatory IBM way) and options/functions are not yet in logical or intuitive places. Would like to see a large FORUMS section up toward the top. Something so important should not be hidden from plain site, in a tiny font, on the left hand side of the screen, under the 'privacy policy'. Sure, someone could get used to anything, but...
Never noticed how nice Amigaworld.net looks until now - especially on my A2500 :-)
Ahem... the calendar is cute! Is there going to be birth dates and anniversaries of important Amiga people and goings on we can click on? lol

Fair enough Wayne..I agree with that! thanks for all the hard work bud :-)..(insert cheers little icon here)
oh & Long Live the Amiga !!!
-
@save 2600
alot off topic but I love your avatar....nice belly buttons ! & I'm cheering for the Pens to the win the Cup this year :-)
-
I must say, it's growing on to me too...
To me, this is nothing short of evolution!
Being invited to one of those new "social groups" really forced me to start
tinkering around the website, posting and upoading...
There are so many subtle things that I like, like the quick "adressfield"-style links
which takes up virtually no space;
» Amiga.org » Main Category » Suggestions and Feedback » The NEW A.Org » Reply to Thread
..and the albums with a cover-thumbnail, sweet!
Great work guys!!!
-
I have one suggestion about the bulletin board.
I don't know what the other people thinks but for me the title parts of the forum post (user information part) are wasting too much space. (I'm displaying the board with 1440x900 wide screen)
I think, instead of putting that information on the top of the message we may place it on the left side as the old board. It would be more compact and easy to follow.

That's entirely possible as I have seen it done on other Vb sites but it is a feature of the theme.
Hacking the theme is probably not too high on the To DO list.
Maybe Wayne will look into it once more pressing issues are out of the way.
-
The more I look at this site, the more I like it. Great job. But please, add an option to choose between "avatar and user info in a row" and "avatar and user info in a little left column", because I always found the first one (that's the current unique choice) very annoying when reading messages one after the other. Thank you! =)
-
Ahem... the calendar is cute! Is there going to be birth dates and anniversaries of important Amiga people and goings on we can click on? lol
I'm not sure if you know this but you can add events to the calender as a registered user. Click on the calendar tab and look at the bottom righ hand side of the page where it says "Add Event"
So if you want to add Jay Miner's birthday for example, you can go ahead and do it. ;)
-
Congratulations!

Yes here:

:)
-
At first I was sceptic about the move. However the new site is great :) well done to everyone involved :)
-
I agree with Paolone. I much prefer Avatar+UserInfo on the left side.

.... again, another case where you haven't bothered to read anything that's been posted previously.
"forums" bar. -- working on it.
"Avatar on left -- working on it.
"side bar order" -- working on it.
"calendar" -- anyone can add any event they like. Even Jay Miner's birthday should you choose to do so.
Anything else you want to bitch and whine about which is already long since being addressed?
Wayne

I must admit I don't particularly like the new site either! Just MHO.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but short of "make it what it was" -- which everyone will just have to get over -- how exactly could we make it better, or what exactly bothers you?
See, that's the thing I don't think people get. It's not enough to bitch and say "I don't like it" without trying to constructively offer a way to fix it. All I ask is that you read what's already been posted for the to do list before repeating the same thing that's already been said.

I've been through a similar "upgrade" in another longstanding forum. As in that one I see now new functionality here. Are there any improvements at all? Is it just change for changes sake?

It's change that was necessary.
If you haven't follwed the threads that explained it all you won't understand.
Anyway, even though it was a forced move the new site does have a lot more modern features. Just spend some time exploring and you shall see.
-
I'm having a bit of trouble navigating around but I think that's just because the layout and things are a bit different.
Overall I'm really happy with the new look and once I'm over the teething troubles I think it'll be better than the old site :)
-
Had to double check the URL to make sure i was at the correct place :)
Will take a while getting use to navigating the site but i do like the new look so far, well done guys.
-
Thanks for new amiga.org, my favorite Amiga portal!!!
-
Sorry Wayne, perhaps I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud, but I find the new site confusing and difficult to navigate around. I personally preferred the layout of the old site but I accept that this might just be due to my familiarity with the previous format. I have read all the threads and I appreciate the reaon for the change but I'm just not keen on the new format. However, like most people I have two choices; live with the new format and get used to the layout or go elswhere for my Amiga fix.
Anyway I'm sure I will get used to it in time? ;-)
TrevorD
-
Hi,
It's shaping up...
But it would be good (as some others have mentioned) if there was a little less 'white-space' - particularly above and below the horizontal 'break-bars' between the "Recent Threads".
Cheers,
Mike.

@Trevor.
Trust me. The Amiga community has been forced to use Xoops on all three of the "big" sites for so many years that most of you simply got overly comfortable with it.
Xoops is, and always was a very simplistic package which did a lot of things, but did absoluntely none of them very well at all. It -- like other CMS's of it's era -- tries to be too many things for too many people
Unfortunately Xoops is -- in no doubts -- a dying product, which means that some (like AW) might have to stick with their custom 1.x version forever while others will meet up with a dead end which drives them as batty as it did me.
vBulletin, which has been in production almost as long, is first, and foremost, a great forums package with features that Xoops has never even thought of. It also has a thriving community which has adapted it to do just about everything, meaning GREAT forum package, good at everything else.
You just have to give us some time to build it, and give it some time to grow on you to cover up the stank of what was Xoops.

I can't explain it exactly, I don't know if it's the color scheme or what but so far I just don't like it. The old amiga.org sort of felt like you were using an interesting content rich Amiga and this one makes me feel like I'm using a cold empty unfriendly microsloth pee see. It just doesn't have that warm and fuzzy feeling but hopefully it will improve.

I respect that, but can only offer "it is what it is"...
I'm sure in 8 years, you'll pretty much feel the same way about this one.
-
It'll just take some people a little time to get used to the new look of the website. As for me, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I know I haven't posted much in the past, but I'm glad I've stuck around.
-
I like the new changes (...uh, except the 2.0+ topaz). I'm also amazed by how smoothly the switch-over went. Great work, Wayne. (http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o130/capedawg/smilies/2140.gif)(http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o130/capedawg/smilies/dancingfruits0nm.gif)

Wow! Nice work, Wayne! Thanks for all the hard work you've put in. Although things look differently, it still has the spirit of the old A.org (for me at least).
-

Only thing I would suggest is the recent 10 post go on the left side since that is the first thing we look at (reading left to right).
-

You are probably right. The more I use the site the more I am getting used to it. Old dogs & new tricks perhaps? One thing I'm not keen on though is the amiga.org retro style logo. I know it's a blown up amiga font but it looks more akin to a retro 8-bit C64 than the revolutionary Amiga that replaced it. Again just MHO.
TrevorD
-
Yes, I think that the Amiga is capable and deserving of a better font than that.
-
I respect that, but can only offer "it is what it is"...
I'm sure in 8 years, you'll pretty much feel the same way about this one.
Well, I guess I should mentinon that I honestly do appreciate not only the work that's been done here but also simply having a place to visit as an AmigaMan.
-
@Trevor & JC
TV stations were using Amiga fonts that were 100x better than that Amiga.org logo in 1987. We sold loads of JDK Video Titler+ back then. LARGE 8/16 color fonts with proper antialiasing for supersmooth display.
The Amiga can display at least 30,000 fonts that are each 32x to 256x better than the new Amiga.org logo font.
-

The font thing is settled by popular vote guys. Sorry. Give it a rest, that was the deal..

-
THe TImex Sinclair font looks odd with the hires logo, but it's your board, I can ignore it.
-
It browses well with Ibrowse 2.4. I give it two thumbs up!

I noticed that now messages layout is exactly as I prefer. Thank you.
-
The logo looks cool, the site looks cool.
Great work guys.
-
I have to admit, when the change first happened, my first reaction was "Oh crap! They've killed Amiga.org!", but as I get used to it, and as the admins tweak and improve it, it IS growing on me.
Keep up the good work.
-
Still most of this works with AWeb.
Is this a bug?

Good greif Wanye how do you deal with it all? If you paid some folks to come they'd still complain.
Good job, good work, and I know you'll keep tweeking to make the new place as comfortable as possible for all despite the moaning.

When I logged on today, it sort of looked like home again. Stopped me in my tracks. It's getting there Wayne, and I am sure I am not the only one who appreciates it.

To quote Emil from Robocop:
"I *LIKE* IT"!
Seriously though, it's a work in progress. It's not the same server software. Quit b!tching about it.
:griping:

I love the new design. Awesome work, Wayne! :-)

Hi,
Really hate the new style, it reminds me of I am a pc site. Nothing unique, just a plain simple pc site. From the blocky looking "Amiga Org" to the color of the screen, to the little beta marked on it, to the way that the board looks.
Repeat after me
"I am a PC"
"I am a PC"

Point of parliamentary order sir. The "color of the screen" is almost exactly what it was before. A shade or two off, but the same nonetheless.
The logo is not permanent, but feel free to submit one and we'll consider it.
"The way the board looks" is what it is, like it or not. If you have a real suggestion rather than gripes, we have a features request / bug reporting engine where that goes.
Remember, no one is forcing anyone to be here and partake of these free services. :)

I love it. I love it so much I fed the kitty!
I must say, immense respect and appreciation for those who have made this migration possible. I really see a lot of work has gone in to this, the slowly growing process actually made me look out for my next visit, as in what's new this time!
I salute you all who have made this transition possible, love the new features and the layout! Congratulations are in order!

The kitty, and I sincerely thank you very, very much.

I'm gone for a day, and you change it again!... I am getting used to all this now - BUT I really like the changes now, specially the logo (glad to see the "beta" gone)
This is starting feel like home already. Until I can toss something at the kitty, thank you Wayne for all your work!
-
That's better. Gone is the blocky logo, it looks so much better (IMHO). Anyway, I'm so pleased I've just fed the Kitty too!
