Which is your favorite 80s/90s hand held?
« on: July 06, 2011, 09:30:48 AM »
As the title says, vote for your favorite 80s/90s hand held console.

For some this is an easy question and for others maybe not so much.

My first true hand held console was the Atari Lynx II. A great system by all means, but i preferred the Sega Game Gear, both for the looks of the console and especially because for me personally i much preferred the games on the Game Gear.

I am not a big fan of Missile Command, Robotron, Pac Man and other old arcade games. Much prefare stuff like Sonic, Castle of Illusion and Wonder Boy.

The Game Boy was also brilliant with its huge library of games and long battery life.

Now imagine if there was a hand held Amiga 500 :P

The GameBoy was okay, but no match for the nicest games of the Game Gear.

The Atari Lynx can be considered as a hand held Amiga. It was developed by some Amiga engineers with collaboration of Epyx and Atari. Too bad the technology back then wasn't up to making hand held A500.

I loved the Atari Lynx.  It was very Amiga-esque hardware-wise which is not surprising as it was designed by members of the original Amiga team including RJ Mical and Dave Needle.  The games were great - gates of zendocon, California games, ramparts kept me occupied for many hours.  The gameboy was not even in the same league.

Yes the lynx had some very good games, Ninja Gaiden being my favourite along with California Games and Blue Lightning. And the build quality is much better. I still have a Lynx I which works perfectly.

The Game Gear offered more in terms of games from big third party publishers. And I love the TV Tuner. The Master System converter is another big plus. I used to love playing Shadow Dancer on my GG as a kid. And Wonder Boy Dragons Trap has got to be one of the best games on a Hand Held console.

The Gameboy also had it's advantages. Long battery life (10 hours +) and a huge library of amazing games like Links Awakening. Shame about the pea soup green non backlit display but I guess that's how it achieved it's excellent batter life.

Turbo Express all the way for me. Being able to play the TurboGrafx-16 hucards on a portable with backlight and color was pretty damn impressive for the time. The tv tuner was pretty cool, too. Plus hucards were awesome for portability. Being a huge Turbografx/PC-Engine fan, I wish NEC still made game consoles/handhelds.:(

Regrettably had to vote for game gear... It was simply the best compromise for the time :)

I liked the Lynx best, but they kept breaking down, so I settled with a game boy - at least they didn't break.

PCE-GT probably, then Gamegear. Lynx screen was really difficult to see most of the time, Gameboy was a piece of shit that had no business in my pocket :)

Only had the original Game Boy back in the late 80s, but recently I grabbed a Lynx off of craigslist, definitely a better system but the screen technology just wasn't where it needed to be yet.

I sort of wanted to vote for the atari lynx here. Interesting hardware that when put to good use can produce some impressive results, but voted for the game gear as its the machine I like most out of the physical machines Ive used (ie. not emulation).
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.
