Hi, I am interested in this product, but first I would like to know what speed have you obtained in your tests using this device.
Thanks.

Let's say I buy it what do I need to save my A3000 HD using this?

I need something similar but for the cyberstorm ppc with the UWscsi support.
I will think to add one of this to the blizzard ppc scsi2.

Nice!

Just slap a microSD card in it and it behaves like a normal hard drive. Back up your existing drive as usual.
There's a firmware config utility at the link provided by mongo above that allows you to adjust some settings (including SCSI ID) via USB connection to a Mac/Windows/Linux box.

So please explain it in easy and simple terms, what would the performance be like in an Amiga with either FFS or PSF3 as filesystems?
From the articlcle:
Transfer Size (bytes): 512 2048 8192 65536
Read 2MB/s 2.1MB/s 2.5MB/s 2.6MB/s
Write 125kB/s 441kB/s 1.5MB/s 2.3MB/s
So which one is it?
I am really worried about the write speed, as there is a huge diffrence between 125kB/s and 2.3MB/s

I assume transfer size would be filesystem's blocksize and that can be defined when defining the partitions. First three probably are possible with all Amiga's filesystems, but I'm not sure about that biggest one... at least SFS supported up to 32768 bytes at some point. Usually they default to 512 bytes... the bigger you set it the more space is wasted with small files (like Amiga has), but it gets faster especially with bigger files. It's a compromize, but 2k or 4k would still be acceptable in many cases.
But in any case that doesn't sound very fast. Maybe more ok for old SCSI controllers in A500 or so, but for example with Blizzard SCSI Kit on A1200 you could get up to 10MB/s speeds and that kind of 2MB/s would be a bottle neck and not faster than internal IDE speeds. Of course CPU load should be much lower even then.
-
I'll probably get one transfer my datas and thought about selling my 3000 and concentrate on the fpgaarcade.

This is neat:
"The power supply has been reworked to be much more efficient, and will allow the new SCSI2SD to run on the terminator power alone. In many cases there will be no need for the power cable." (From the codesrc website)
This has promise for use in my TI.

So what your saying basically is this is a great boot partition but not a HD replacement.
Read is good, write, not so much!

More like seek is good, read is ok, and write is slow. Only asynchronous transfers are supported which will limit maximum transfer speeds. It is quick but not fast. It should be a reliable and affordable alternative to aging 50 pin SCSI hard drives but there are higher performance options.

An ACard adapter with an IDE to SD converter doesn't cost much more and performs a lot better.

Sure, if you like daisy-chaining a bunch of stuff.
-
Geeeee Wizzzzz! This community really is a tough crowd. I have systems that will love this. I wish Mech's CF reader were also still as available.
I'd like 1 or 2 in my Christmas stocking!

Well use an SSD in and Acard adapter then. :P

So, does that mean it's read speed is slower than my a500s current hdd setup?

Seen one of these in person yesterday. Nice looking hardware. Its a great idea too. Being able to put 128GB card in one give you some seriously cool space in a small area on top of having lightning fast boot up speeds!

you dont have a nanopeb? its the bee's knees ;D

SCSI to IDE to sd is alot of conversions, better off with scsi to ide to cf, since a cf is a true ide interface. less latency since no conversion to serial nature of SD but your experience may differ.. I have used a few sd converters on 4000 ide with a bunch of different cards, they work but i notice they aren't as snappy as cf and some are problematic with bigger cards.

I do, but I also have a real PEB complete with WHT SCSI and BwG floppy controller.

My question is how do you use these things?
I plugged one into my scsi chain on my 4000T. It doesn't even show up to prep!

C'mon now, what else have you tried?
Just from looking at the picture, have you tried: remove the resistors? Add the resistors? Remove the jumper? Add the jumper?
I assume you have a MicroSD card already inserted? I can't tell from the pic, is there some way of changing the ID?
It didn't come with any instructions at all? Bah. :(
Maybe try unplugging all the other devices from your SCSI chain and seeing if it's recognized then?

http://www.codesrc.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=SCSI2SD
on my pc I hooked it up via usb cable to pc. set id to 4 (default is 0) and enable scsi 2 mode. Also upgraded firmware to 4.5
I used hdinstools and it seen the 16 gig card I used. I set the file system to fastfilesystem 43.20 and partition card as normal.
Pretty much had to figure it all out cause there was no manual or how too's.
Then I copied everything off the old hd to the card.

Wonder if I should replace the buddha... will have to check speeds.
The price isn't bad.
-
So I just got mine in today and tested it out on my A4000T. This is one cool device! I am going to put in a spare 16GB card I have and duplicate the HD partitions in my current drive. LOVE this thing! The 8GB card I just tested that it came with worked flawlessly when I set it up and booted off it.
-
Are you sure its faster than your old hard drive? according to the specifications its only 2.5mb per second. A SCSI hard drive is between 10 and 20mb per second.

I'd have to do some more testing on that, but I am sure its not faster. I have a ultra wide Cheetah drive on my CSPPC scsi, this thing is just standard SCSI from what I see.
It doesn't discount the cool factor though, lol...
-
i think its only 1 meg a sec.. but I ditched my cheetah drive .. it was so freaking hot. But well worth it IMHO. Solid and if I have to wait a extra sec for a whdload game.. so be it lol.. . not to mention probably heck of alot easier on the power supply too!
-

2.5MB/s is plenty for many Amiga systems. A2091, most GVP "hardcards", A500's with sidecars, unaccelerated/68000 systems, etc. You're more likely to hit the limits on your bus before you'll hit the limits on this device. Not everyone has a CSPPC to hook it up to!
-

Is the Amiga bus that slow?
-
I have one on my A3000 with OS3.9 installed and it works great!!
-
Is the Amiga bus that slow?
I should have said "or controller". Zorro II tops out at around 3.5MB/sec, AFAIR, but a lot of old controllers can't even reach that.
-
Dragging up this old thread. I finally got one of these adapters to test in the GVP sidecar on my A500, since the case can't close anymore with the Guru-ROM sitting in its PCB adapter sitting underneath the Mechware card reader.
Adapter arrived quickly from AmigaKit already flashed with what appears to be the latest firmware (4.7.1), kudos for that. :)
Prepped an old 4GB MicroSD on my A2000 (via card reader), popped it in the adapter, and popped the adapter into the sidecar. On preliminary tests it seems to be "okay", in that the Amiga sees the card reader and can read the data off it that I put on there with my A2000, I was able to load SysInfo from command line (off the MicroSD when booting with no startup-sequence), but am getting a lot of errors related to HD_SCSI mode. I'm thinking this is something I need to enable on the device but none of the options are quite clear (screenshots attached). Any suggestions?
Edit - file system is PFS3-AIO if that makes a difference.
Edit 2 - removed one of the screenshots that wasn't actually an issue with the SCSI2SD.
Edit 3 - looks like I need to check the box to enable SCSI 2, per this thread (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=70601). Might've just solved this myself, LOL. ;)

I'm super late to this party I'm sure, but if anyone sees this, I own this product, well two of them (one is in the mail).
I'm not using it with my Amiga 1200, but I am using it with my trusty Peavey SP sampler.
My question is about the SCSI ID changing. someone mentioned above about there being some usb utility? Where can I find this?
also connecting via USB? where is this software I can use with it?
-
Here ya go.... all necessary files and info for both versions. I use Windows to config & works fine. :)

Hey @Gizmo350 thanks a lot! mine is not this exact card.. mine is this one http://shop.codesrc.com/image/cache/data/scsi2sd-5.0-back-500x500.jpg are they universal?
-
I know, the page is confusing because they show the V6 card at the top but info and files for both V6 & V5 are there on that page. You have a V5 contoller. :)
When using the config tool, the only thing that confused me was, that after making a change and saving, the tool wouldn't show the change unless I clicked the LOAD config.
-
that's fantastic thanks so much! i didn't want to zorch something! :)
-

That is odd it should just work straight away. Sounds like a termination issue... ive tried scsi to sd v5 on cdtv and a2000 no problems at all with hdtoolbox
-
ok one last question on my end about the utility.. the first one i bought came with a 4gb sd card.. but the new one has 8gb.. will it format like normal and just not "see" the other 4gb (i don't care if it ignores that space) or will there be some problem trying to format an 8gb drive? maybe i use the utility to configure the device?
my plan is to hook it up and just "initialize" the new 8gb drive for this device. i'm 99% sure this late 80's sampler will not see anything higher than 4gb.. i know it does see all 4gb from the 4gb sd card i currently have.
-
@part12studios
You will surely have to partition the 8GB card.
Connect the SCSI2SD to the USB port first then fire up the utility (either 32bit or 64 bit if using Windows - you must know this first).
Device Type: (I'm not sure here if you're using other that a computer) - I'm using "Hard Drive".
Default "Sector Size" in (bytes) should be left at 512. Your 8GB card should read a default "Sector Count" total of around 16,000,000+ bytes. Divide the Sector Count (actual) in half, or, 8,000,000+ (don't use commas) - that will give a 1st partition of 4GB. Set the "Device Size" to 4GB.
Now, "Save to Device".
If I remember correctly, I had to then click "Load from Device to see the change.
That should give you a 4GB partition. :)
As far as a second partition? Beats me.... I'm using mine in a 68K MAC LC III. I can't figure it out. LOL
**Based on my own info here.... I got to thinking and checked my SCSI2SD config and found a glaring error on my part - fixed it - and now have 2 partitions on my 4GB SD card! YEAH!
-
yea that's perfect. i don't care about the other 4gb of space.. it's more than enough for this. So yea sounds like the tool itself will help me configure the sd card for smooth formatting. waiting for it to arrive in the mail. going to leave the original one alone and let the new one be my test subject before i risk
ok last question.. maybe.. lol.. is there an easy way to duplicate an sd card? basically i'm making this 2nd SD HD a backup of the other.. for redundancy..
i would like to duplicate the data, but the format the data is in is some custom format used by Peavey. it's not Fat32 or what have you..
my basic plan was simply to manually load each (around 250) patches one at a time and save them to the other drive but this will take at least an hour to do.. probably 2..
so just wondering if there is some way to 1:1 duplicate the card regardless of the format.. because i know there are no tools out there to deal with Peavey's disk format and i don't know what info i'd need to find
i imagine i could put the sd card into my computer and see what it sees.. but i won't know that for a few more days.
-
As far as formatting for what you're using it for... I have no idea - sorry. The SCSI2SD utility does not have a formatting capability AFAIK. :(
Yea, maybe try using your PC. Maybe someone else here can chime in?
-
yea i'm sure there is something like x-copy for the Mac.. good ol' X-Copy
