Both Demos were crazy good but that Crest 2010 demo was pretty sick.... I don't remember a memory expansion ever coming out for the C64.  Heck I bought the C64 a couple of months after it came out when I was a kid.  Spent all my newspaper money.

That was really impressive, do you think the Risen From Oblivion demo would run on my stock Commodore 128D ?

Wow, both those demos were totally SICK for a commodore 64/128 !  Nice

I still have my c64 setup, two of them actually lol both the old brown breadbox style ohhh yea !!!!

The C64 demo didn't do much for me.  By all means, nice colours and design, but displaying animations never impressed me much.

Risen from oblivion, on the other hand, is quite impressive.  AFAIK, it's one of the very few demos that actually use the full 64K VDC expansion on my C128.  I seem to recall that this demo also utilizes the 2MHz mode quite cleverly.

I have ridiculous amounts of respect for the C64/C128 coders active today.

My thought, as well.  I think it would, as I did not see anything special in use other than the hard drive-like interface used for storage.  The 128D has a 64k VDC, so I would give it a go.

That's affirmative.  A 128D should run this demo without problems, "flat" 128's needs the extra VDC memory.

It actually runs with the standard 16k VDC, some parts are just improved with full 64k VDC

The rotozoomed faces scene in the Oblivion demo was particularily impressive for me..

Question about the rotozoom part of both demos: for either demo were those calculations for the rotation and scaling of each frame done in real time? That would totally blow me away if this were the case! (arguably even more so with the C64, since it has the slower CPU of the two).

Nice, very nice...

I always find it amazing how far (even today) people can push the old hardware...

Can you imagine how astounding this would've been back in 1984?

Mike.

I totally remember being impressed by the demos of the day and by the rotation, scrolling and colors that pirates would use in their training menus. Too bad more demo programmers & pirates weren't game developers.   ;)

There were three RAM expanders out for the C64/128.  The 1764 was 256k and the 1750 was 512k.  The 1750 was only intended for use with the 128 but clipping out a capacitor allowed it to be used with the C64 also using a beefed-up power supply unit.  The 1764 came with the power supply upgrade already.  The 1700 was only 128k and I don't think I'd ever seen one of them that hadn't been upgraded to use bigger RAM chips.

They are these days though: Pretty much the whole game development industry in Finland are of demoscene origin. :-)

The rotozoom (like pretty much everything else) in the BluREU demo is an animation, but the one in Risen from Oblivion is realtime.

You might want to read up on the technical bits of NUFLI..

Even though it is "just" an animation demo, it's by no means a trivial feat to display them in that resolution and with that many colours. The method was only invented within the last few years.

@Britelite
I see, totally awesome. Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!

Still, respect goes to the C64 demo for pushing the hardware. I also liked this C64 image art (2-color hires mode! o.O)

There is nothing I regret more in retrospect than the sale of my old 128, it must be the dumbest I've ever done.

I had a 1571 as well and i remember a demo or something like that played a song with the disk drive. I just tested it a few times because i was afraid it would damage it, heh. I think it was the readhead which produced the sound, it was at least something mechanical inside the disk drive.(And I'm pretty sure that i have not seen too much digital acid).

Does anyone else remember it and know if there is a video from this thing?

Haha... yes there it is. 1541 hmm, I thought it was only 1571 that could do it.

It's amazing what you can do with the C64. Time to search, i think there is one at an uncle of mine.
