Title: What is/are your favourite ARCADE game(s), but...?
Post by: MAD on May 12, 2004, 01:32:16 PM
Hoya!

The topic says it all, EXCEPT that I am not talking about new 3D stuff but rather 70's, 80's and early 90's bitmap champs!

Here I go:

Carnival/Sega (the VERY first video game I played, I was 5! :-D )
R-Type/Irem
Out Run/Sega
Double Dragon/Jaleco (err, I have a doubt?)
DragonNinja/Data East Japan
Hammerin' Harry/Irem
UFO Robo Dangar/Nishibutsu
Terra Force/Nishibutsu
Commando/Capcom
1941-1942-1943/Capcom
Raiden/Nishibutsu (I think)
Shinobi/Sega
Chelnov Atomic Runner/Data East?
Rygar/Namco?
PacMan/Namco
RoboCop/Data East...
Street Fighter/Capcom
Final Fight/Capcom

OK, I have others in mind but I will let you have a go first! ;-)

Be funky

Off the top of my head...

Operation Wolf
Space Gun
Puzzle Bobble / Bust-a-Move
Columns
Guerilla War
Chase HQ

[I reckon if I played some of them now I'd find them naff..]

My fave at the moment is Time Crisis 3, but that's not a 'classic' coin-op

All time favourite: 1942

Shinobi was also cool, but i think i recall it being an awfully short playtime on that one...

My all time favorites, which I still play today, as a matter of fact are:

R-Type/R-Type II
Katakis
Xenon II
The Chaos Engine
Datastorm
Battle Squadron
Menace
Blood Money
Onslaught
Persian Gulf Inferno
Gods
Speedball II

There you go!

UFO Robo Dangar/Nishibutsu

Bless you.

Seriously though I've always preferred playing games on computers / consoles to arcades.  There's more of a need for depth of gameplay, as you don't run out of 50 pence coins to keep feeding an Amiga... ;-D

Fave arcades are as follows:

Outrun - Sega

Unbeatable for a sense of occasion.  The soundtrack, the novelty of the hydraulic cabinet and the adolescent desire to drive fast to impress a female passenger.  Shame the game featured a butt-ugly Testarossa though, had it been the prettier 328 or maybe a Berlinetta Boxer it would have been nigh on perfect!

GTI Club - unknown

Driving either a Golf GTi or Mini Cooper (among others) around Monaco flat out, in the style of the Italian Job was a serious buzz, particularly as I owned my own Golf GTi at the time!

Virtua Racing - Sega

Actually put you in the driving seat of an F1 car.  Playing against mates was the big attraction.

Operation Wolf - Taito

Solely for the purpose of gratuitous use of an Uzi 9mm!

Marble Madness!

There are others that I enjoy, but that's THE favourite game for me.

I like Atari System 1 games a lot, for some reason..

My 2 all time favs:

Gauntlet (Atari)
APB (Atari)

I think these are system 2 games, but yes Atari was the king of games back then.

Other games that I REALLY dug:

Tempest (Atari)
Street Fighter 2 (Capcom) - before it became hyper turbo mega street fighter ex
NFL Blitz & NBA Jam
All the laser disc games - Dragon's Lair 1 & 2, Space Ace, etc.  Yes, I LIKED those :)

Frontier Elite II. It has to be.

I have wads of star system info for the first galaxy, and I classify myself as pretty much having beaten the game due to eventually getting hold of a galaxy drive that let me change Galaxy as though I was merely changing star system! :-)

The street fighter 2 style games, but with comic book characters, like Spiderman and Wolverine etc. Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel vs Capcom, X-Men vs Street Fighter..and Street Fighter Alpha wasnt bad. MSH is my all time favourite though.

Does anyone remember Hyper Sports?  I vividly recall the sound of buttons being slapped furiously by people playing that one.  I remember playing it on a mate's C64, and seeing joysticks getting broken regularly!

Well, I'll concentrate on listing those "unmentioned" ones...

-Metal Slug series (SNK)
The gameplay is nice, graphics (especially animation) is unbelieveably good and the end of level bosses... They're simply so much over the top :-)

-Garou - Mark of the Wolves (SNK)
The best fighter game ever (What can you expect from SNK anyway?)
My personal record is 506500 points (Completed with one credit)

-Magical Drop 3
A game bit like Puzzle Bobble with 2 players, of course...

-Thunderblade
Still the ONLY arcade game, I've ever completed (NOT under emulation)

-Gyruss
Always liked that game on C64. And then when I finally found the arcade version, it was out-of-order! :-)

-Nemesis/Gradius series
Those games much defined how side scrolling shooters would be for the next decade...

-Up'n'Down
Played it a lot on C64 ages ago, later found out it was originally arcade game. Liked the red car on C64 more, though...

Ah Metal Slug series - classic!
But they are 90s games are they not?

Hoya!

@Drwho

Hehe... I said ARCADE games (the ones you had to pay for), NOT Amiga games. It is another topic! ;-D

I forgot Operation Wolf. Brilliant game indeed.
As for HyperSports, well, it was quite a fun game but way too difficult!
I played the arcade a couple of times but I had it on CPC and I went past the second event only a couple of times...
Too bad.

I forgot P.O.W. by SNK! Boy, I liked this one very much! It has a nice atmosphere but was worth playing with a mate for it was not that easy.

Two MASSIVE classics now:

Bubble Bobble
The New Zealand Story

I wonder if someone on this planet did NOT like them?
As funny and as addictive as Lemmings!

90's games are ok as long as they are bitmap.
I dig the SNK classics. All had a distinctive style of their own, although some of the Art of Fighting seriess WERE damn hard!

I forgot another classic too...

P47 Thunderbolt by Jaleco (or Namco? I do not remember!) Yeah! Groovy babe!

As you can imagine, I am a BIG MAME fan but...

Many games are unplayable on my 060@50+AGA. Would having a Mediator and a GFX card improve my situation drastically?

Also, there are some sountracks I LOVE and I would love to have on MP3...
So, it is possible, through MAME, to make some kind of memory dump to rip them, then convert them to MP3s???
(Think of Street Fighter, especially Geki and Lee themes! ;-) )

Be funky

Yep, I liked Operation Wolf a lot...  Hyper Sports I was shockingly awful at too.  I couldn't get very far, despite smacking the hell out of the machine.

Yep,

Bubble Bobble was great and was dead easy to convert to any format as it wasn't exactly the most hardware demaning game in the world.  Proof that good gameplay doesn't necessarily need eye candy.

New Zealand Story drove me nuts....  The irritating soundtrack was too much, as was my inability to get further than level 2!

Yep...  Haven't tried Amiga MAME though, so can't comment on how it runs on an Amiga, but a Mediator & Voodoo would give a huge increase in speed to your system.

Magical Sound Shower and Splash Wave...  For those who haven't guessed already they're tunes from Outrun.

Does anyone know where I can get them from?

I lived too far away from the arcades so I didn't really play that much. When I did though my favourites were:

* Bubble Bobble
* 1942
* Out Run

(and in the 90s Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter ruled my world.)

Hoya!

@PMC

Muhahaha! I went further than the second level in NZS! ;-P

As for the Mediator+gfx card, I plan to bring my Ammy in England, tower her up and buy a Mediator, as well as a Voodoo, a Spider and other bits...

As for the OutRun soundtrack... I got them! ;-)
On my Ammy.
In France... :-P

But you can get them from stuff like Kazaa I guess.
Back then, someone got them for me from Napster I think.
Because, actually, there HAS been a CD released in Japan, featuring the OutRun tracks! Obviously, I would love to get it but it is NOt the kind of things you get at Virgin Megastore... (sacasm).

Now, no one has answered my questions.
Is MAME almost usable with a GFX card AND is it possible to dump its memory content to rip the tunes inside?

Maybe should I ask Exotica... ;-)

Yeah bet I could whup your ass on Turrican II though! LOL :-)

Go for the Mediator & add ons, you won't regret it.  Not sure how your Amiga will travel, don't you guys have a different system to PAL or NTSC over there?  Then you've got to get a 220v PSU...  But don't let that put you off.

Have found them on the Outrun.org site! Many thanks Jupp3 for that!

I now want to go home early from work, burn a CD of Magical Sound Shower and Splash Wave and play them whilst driving my (bright red) Alfa Romeo flat out with some token blonde in the passenger seat!

Happy days :-D

THANK YOU JUPP FOR THE OUT RUN SITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah!!!!!!! Out Run is one of the GREATEST arcade games EVER!!!!! No 3D nonsense, only pure fun!

The soundtrack tape came with the CPC version as well... Got it ;-)

Some months ago I bought a MiniDisc player  with can use a net connection and I though I would never use it...

My favourite arcade games were the ones I could play for free - Choplifter, Outrun, Road Blasters & Pac Man being the most memorable, though we did also have the multi-game NES and Mega Drive based cabs.  After getting the cabinet key and just repeatedly flicking the microswitch for credits paying seemed a bit of a waste :-P

Star Force (AKA Mega Force) - simple gameplay and only 1 powerup but something about the design of attack waves that made it really tricky!

Salamander - I remember when this came out there consistently used to be about a dozen people crowded round it watching, gets stupidly tough though at one point :-\

Salamander? You bet! It is damn hard...

I have to add Shinobi, love the Amiga version, too.

Does anyone remember Empire City 1931?
On CPC, Amiga and St, there was an unofficial conversion called Prohibition. Liked this game.

AND... Does anyone remember this DEAD cool Tecmo game called Psychic 5???? I LOVED it! Got it on MAME but it is a bit too slow...

That is all for now..

Well... Metal Slug 4 and 5 are post 2000. ;)

Hmm...  In the '80's?

Well, I think Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man. ;)

I always enjoyed Donkey Kong 3, Gyruss, Discs of Tron, Afterburner (full cab).

Umm... There was a Sega game which was a sort of "space" version of Hang-on?  I forgot what it was called!

Let's see... There was Rygar, Super Sprint, Bubble Bobble, Psycho Fox (later found on Sega Master System *yay!*), Golden Axe (remember hearing the yells when it was first released!), Space Harrier, STUN Runner, Quartet, Xenophobe, Ninja Warriors (that widescreen TAITO game), Elevator Action, Bump and Jump, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Star Wars (original Arcade).

I could go on and on. :)

Centipede for sure! When my wife and I were courting I found that if we came to a place with Centipede, sweety-pie would jack in and that was it for her for the evening. Always trying to bump #1 off the high score board. She did pretty good, too. I have Evil Garden for the Amiga here just so's she can recall the happy new-in-love days....sigh. I usually played Ms.Pacman and badly, too. I'm much better at games you can think about for a few minutes. I tend to over-react under pressure, which was a good thing when I was armored up for real and pounding on some guys head with my mace! I liked that much more than arcade games.....

I grew up a bit late for the Pac-Man/Centipede class games.  My favorite "old" titles are Lady Bug and ChaseHQ.

Of course, nothing beats the original version of Hard Drivin'.  I can't believe what crap the Amiga/PC conversions were!  It took the split-track design of Outrun and gave you the choice between a race track and a stunt course.  How can you beat that?  :-)

Were there any other "realistic" racing games in the arcades?  Modern "lightweight" racers like Daytona USA 2 give me hives.
