Title: So other commodore machines?
Post by: runequester on April 03, 2011, 05:54:45 PM
So tell me about your other commodore machines.

Not so interested in what they are, or how many you have. I want to know about what you DO on them. What games did you play recently? Did you code something in basic? What action does your 20's and 64's get? Is the 128 awesome? etc etc

Lets hear it for the commies

I just got the Commodore LOGO module for my Plus 4. The box has 121 colours which I think I must do something to really show them off one day.

I still love the way Newsroom was creating magazines on my C64 and I am thinking of getting a mps801 from ebay just for that. Strangely VICEs printer emulation won´t produce proper output.

Over the years I've managed to pick up (for free) a C=64, C=64C, and C=128D (missing a keyboard). I also bought myself a C=64DTV (Direct-TV, the one inside a Competition Pro style joystick) from my local Target store when they were clearing them out, I was lucky to get the last of two units, the other having been opened already (probably returned), but I regret not getting that last one too now. This is the one I play games on, I haven't really had the time to set up the other Commodores permanently to use, but I'd like to eventually. There are plenty of newer games from recent years I'd love to try on them.

Here I am (http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/CammyCommodoreDTV.JPG) with my C=64DTV, and here I am (http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/CammyCommodore.JPG) playing Nebulus with the DTV on my Amiga's monitor (which has selectable RF,AV,S-Video,VGA, Component and HDMI inputs)

I would love to pick up a regular wedge model C=128 some day, and get a keyboard for my 128D. And of course I dream of some day getting one of Jens' awesome Chameleon (http://www.vesalia.de/e_chameleon.htm) cartridges so I can easily transfer software onto it to play and take advantage of all the other awesome features it has.

Some day I would love to be on a team that makes some C=64 games. I have ideas for some multi-platform retro games I'd love to make, targetting Commodores and Amigas, and maybe even Atari ST, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis (probably Mega/Sega CD), PC-Engine, Neo Geo CD, and I guess any other viable system where there's a coder willing to make a port.

I don't think it's impossible to make a retro multi-platform game and sell it these days. There seems to be a pretty healthy market for old second-hand games as well as new games for old systems, and other teams have pulled it off. As long as the game is simple enough to work on the lowest-end platform it shouldn't be too hard for a capable coder to reproduce on more powerful systems.

Okay, I'm dreaming a little bit, but I'm being honest about what I think about. I love the Commodore 64 with its quirky palette and amazing sound chip. I can't wait to play Shredz64 (http://www.toniwestbrook.com/shredz64) on one some day, preferably with one of my guitar controllers.

Does the C64dtv allow to copy new games onto it?

The old C64 gets fired up around 5 to 8 times a week for a spot of Forbidden Forest, Poster Paster, Super Pipeline and Mr Mephisto mostly... :)

The old VIC 20 maybe 4 or 5 times a month for a few games of Omega Race & Gorf for the most part... :)

Even though I can use a C64 emulator running at full speed on the Amiga it lacks something in the sound quality that only the real SID chip can produce... :)

No, but you can do as I have done and place it inside a cheap PC keyboards and add joystick ports etc... and hook it up to an Amiga to allow you to download and play all the old C64 games that you can store on your Amiga's HD... :)

I had a VIC-20 for a while, but since I already had an A500 at the time, I only played with it for a coupleof months before passing it along to a friend.
The only non-Amiga C= product I own now is a calculator.

I really like my 128D, as well built as my A1000 and just lovely. Use it mostly for programming though. VIC20 and C64 for gaming.

Had a C16 and a +4 but they stopped working. Don't bother with those unless you have the adapter for real joysticks if you want to play games.

I have a C64. It's got:

Mssiah cart (http://www.8bitventures.com/mssiah/)
uIEC/SD (http://store.go4retro.com/products/uIEC%7B47%7DSD.html)
DUAL SID board (http://koti.mbnet.fi/malinto/dualsid/index.shtml)
Jiffy DOS (not installed yet)

It sounds great. Should have some time to use it soon.

I always really liked the look of the 128. Just a nice, sleek design. A friend of mine had one when I was a kid, but we only ever used it in the 64 mode, to run old games.

have my original 64 that i still play my all time fav game Archon on occasionally.  Also have a modded 64c with dual SIDS installed and JiffyDOS to use with my MSSIAH cart for messing around with some freaky beats (wish i had more time for that though)
Also have a 128 that I painted Blue as I got it years ago all beautifully yellowed and retrobright etc. was not in existence then:)

No Vic 20 but the C64 to play some games Forbidden Forest, Times of Lore and space taxi i try to program in basic but i don't get much time until all my Amiga projects get finish.
The C128D is set up (the one that looks like the A500 is in its box) but i don't use that much wish I had the time.
I play conan, and star blazer on my Apple II love those games (lol had to sneak it in!!!!) :D

If you have the C64 DTV v2 or v3, you can reflash it to have different games.

The PSX64 adapter should now be available in order for you to play Shredz64.

I've quite often looked at the Catweasel board but never got round to buying one, it's like I say the Frodo C64 emulator on the Amiga runs fine it's only the SID emulation that lets it down... :)

Reckon though I prefer to use my real C64s to play C64Games especially with the MMC board where I have a 4GB SD card with all my C64 Games on it, so there are no tapes or disks involved and I rewrote the BIOS for it to allow full loading and saving of the C64s memory including "under the ROMS"... :)

It's great for development. Nice disk drives and nicer keyboard.Very little reason for games players to swap to a 128 though. Shame really.

Funny thing is on WinVICE I use TAP files only.

SID sound via reSID model +2ghz CPU in WinVICE sounds nice. Anyway I bought the 6581 Inside MP3 disc and it's fantastic, real C64 music to play on my amp *wooo*

Even better they're working on an 8Gb double disc set for Amiga MP3 digitally enhanced set, summer 2011 I think.

fully agree - when my c64 blew up (literally, a power-surge) I got a C128 and used it primarily for SuperText (school), SuperBase/Geos and for development, great little machine to program in assembler using TopAss and the REU I got :)

I don't have the space to have it setup permanently (neither for my A2000) which is a shame :(

I still have my original VIC-20 in working order, but my Super Expander has gone walkabout.  I have 3 other "breadbox" C64s (1 dead) and 3 C128s (1 dead) which I used on a regular basis for my classic 8 bit fix.

I picked up a C-One as a possible replacement, but it never actually replaced the C64 and the Amiga module never worked right compared to the Minimig.  Eventually it broke so now it gathers dust.

I then went back to the real C128/C64 again and bought a MMC Replay cartridge which was great for playing some T64 and D64 games off an SD Card.

Lately I picked up a C64C and a Chameleon cartridge which is better than sliced bread.  Although the core is still in Beta, it works well and I have real Commodore floppy drives connected to the actual C64C, I use the Chameleon VGA out to my plasma monitor, I can launch many T64 and D64 programs from the SD Card, access several built in Cartridge images, use the joystick ports on the C64C, attach a PS-2 mouse and keyboard if I wish, etc.

I haven't had a chance to use it for a couple of months due to work commitments and a trip to the UK, but it now has a Minimig core too (which is where the PS-2 keyboard could be useful) and new cartridges have been added such as Simons BASIC.

Also, for those who don't have a real C64 any more, it works in "standalone mode" where you can plug real C64 drives into a port attached directly to the cartridge and use a PS-2 keyboard (and mouse), although in standalone mode it has to draw power from a USB souce (cable supplied - either plug it into a PC/Mac or use a USB-110/240v socket adapter liek you use for charging phones/MP3 players).  An expender which attaches to the connector that would normally plug into the real C64's cartridge slot due to be released shortly and that will add 4 joystick ports and a connector for a real C64 keyboard (for anyone who has a dead C64 with a good keyboard).

Updates come all the time and hopefully it won't be long before the "retail" version is available to the masses.

I have a 128dcr with u1541-ii cartridge and 1902a monitor. I'm writing an adventure interpreter/mini vm. works on 64bit linux and c64/128. right now its scott adams level verb/noun but i'm expanding it to use some little more complex stuff but not fullsentence (ie: you can say unlock wooden door with wooden key.. it cheats and you get {player} verb noun noun.

game script compiler is actually a ruby script so you cant compile on the c64/c128 ;) but the binary data files are transportable between systems, so too save files...

All of my 8 bit computers were stolen some time back. I still have copies of Wiz Ball and Potty Pigeon for the C-64 that I used to enjoy - and will again soon. I even landed a Warp Speed Cart to use in a C-128 as soon as.....

I've got a luggable Commodore SX-64. I've got one of the kits where you can hook it to the serial port of a PC and use the PC as a hard drive but I've not gotten around to using it yet.
