Tried to install the demo onto my Amikit install. Just crashed. Tried the latest AmiSSL on IB2.4. Pathetic, so incompatible with recent sites. Pity.

Tried the demo, waaaay slower then 2.4 and the whole system gets super slow whenever I load a page.
will not be buying this due to the super bad performance

I'd been planning on buying a new key to support the developers. $60 is quite a bit more than I was expecting it to be, but no one ever said this hobby was cheap. Ordered anyway - I hope this is the beginning of a faster development cycle of further improvements. Thanks to the team!

Today I emailed Oliver and requested a name change to my real name for registration and he did. What a nice guy! I was thinking maybe that wasn't such a good idea!   ;D

will not be buying this due to the super bad performance

Possible explanations I can think of:
1. Demo is limited to 2 network threads, so there's a bottleneck as to how much can get processed at once.
2. Virtually everything on the web uses HTTPS/crypto now, so there's going to be a performance hit as AmiSSL crunches the data through our old, slow 68K chips.

Got the demo running on my A1200...looks good and far less problems than I had with 2.4 and loading pages.

Only problem I had so far was getting it to log into Amiga.org.  Last time it said I had a bad user name.  I'm using the right data.  Perhaps when my key arrives it will be better...

And I made it work.  I'm hoping speed increases as it builds a cache but running much better and with less issues than 2.4 on my 3.1.4 A1200 w '030.  The registration was quick and painless too!

Tried the latest AmiSSL on IB2.4
IBrowse 2.4 can and will only use AmiSSL v3. AmiSSL v2, v3 and v4 can be installed concurrently, and the latest compatible version will be served up depending on what version an application asks for. It's not like a regular library (due to ABI changes in OpenSSL, applications need to be recompiled to make use of new versions).

1. is probably useful in this case as 2. is likely to be the issue. I was unable to test this on classic hardware (Amigakit have my A1200 and won't send it back - long story!), so I was unable to test out all SSL settings to see if there are optimal ciphers on 68k machines. AmiSSL v3 slowed down with DH ciphers (IBrowse 2.4 disabled these on first try). So, have a play with disabling ciphers in the IBrowse 2.5 settings and/or backing SSL support down from TLSv1.3 to TLSv1.2.

May I asked: Which version of MUI you have installed?
Besides iBrowse, can anybody recommend MUI 3.9 at all? How does it work together with YAM and other programs which require MUI? Any problems?

MUI 3.8 contains a few nasty bugs which IBrowse tries to workaround, but there are a couple of issues (at least, one can cause a crash) that can't be avoided without removing those features from IBrowse entirely :(.  Stefan Burstroem fixed these in MUI 3.9 himself many years ago.  That is the reason we recommend a minimum of MUI 3.9. Certainly should be ok on a 68k machine, although admittedly I only used it long before the public 68k release, so I'm not sure what the more recent build is like.

Anyway, will be interesting to hear peoples experiences of the different MUI versions - certainly, during IBrowse 2.5 development, some 68k users were quite vocal on the mailing list on the topic of MUI 4/5, insisting that MUI 3.8 support was retained.

Can you be more specific? MUI 3.9 was beta at best, and though it fixes some bugs in 3.8, it also introduced new features and new bugs. So ideally, one would wish to start with MUI 3.8, and only update the classes from 3.9 that really are improvements. Well, ideally, MUI 3 for 68k should be "rebundled" :)

Well, must be my Amikit config, on Amiga Forever no problems - installed and works.

I bought it last night and have been experimenting with it. I am pretty happy so far - it does a pretty good job and is fairly speedy.

One thing I noticed is that it works better with AmigaOS 3.1.4 and the new intuition.library. iBrowse 2.4 would give me graphics corruption if it was dragged off screen, 2.5 handles going off screen just fine. I plan on testing it for a week or so and then doing a proper review.

Thanks Doug! Could you also test with results using OS3.9? That would be great!
Also, could detail how to "update" AmiSSL from an older version to the latest version?

Thanks!

I keep getting a "IBrowseNetwork " crash anytime it tries to load a secure site, non secure sites load with no problem. I reinstalled AmiSSL still no joy. I'm running an A1200 with an ACA1221 card with 63 megs fastram. It also crashes if I just go into the network settings. Anyone have any ideas?

Simply download the latest Version from Aminet and install it over your existing Version... that´s all :)

I have had issues with AmiSSL when just trying to install the newer versions that were corrected by starting with older versions and updating each one. Also, make sure you are not receiving errors when decompressing AmiSSL - it won't decompress with some gui based unarchiving utilities. I just use lha from a command line and then it works ok.

I suspect available RAM also makes a notable difference.

My A4000 (50MHz '060) with the standard motherboard RAM (2MB Chip/16MB Fast) was very slow (3.1.4.1); but my A3000 (25MHz '040) with 2MB Chip/6MB Fast--and the 256MB BigRamPlus--was significantly faster. :)

Both are running 3.1.4.1, the 4000 has a PicassoIV and the 3000 has a CyberVision 64/3D; both using P96.

Need to order another BigRamPlus for my A4000, but they're out of stock as of this writing. :-\

it won't decompress with some gui based unarchiving utilities.
You are just encountering a bug in xad that the OS 3.9 "Unarc" program, and certain other programs rely on. You will encounter the same bug if you use xadunfile from CLI. It happens when the archive contains directories that have been packed as if they are files, with trailing slashes.

For example in the AmiSSL-4.3.lha...
Code: [Select]
AmiSSL/
AmiSSL/C/
AmiSSL/C/AmigaOS3/
AmiSSL/C/AmigaOS3/OpenSSL
...
xad will fail to unpack the three first, and will instead print error message "opening file failed", and OS 3.9 Unarc will open a requester about error.
Normally, when creating an archive with an Amiga version of Lha, it doesn't create these "buggy paths" in the archive (at least I never saw it happen), so I suspect this only happens with some version of u*ix or Windows version of an Lha archiver. Regardless, I think xad should be fixed to handle it better (if it isn't already, not been paying attention to what goes on with xad).

this issue is because of unARC could not handle Softlinks like "." and ".." Entries in the Archiv. Should not be a Problem to ignore These. This works fine for me.

Out of curiosity (I'll probably buy this IB2.5 version) how is the installation handled? Does it ask to install IB 'over the top' of an existing IB installation or does it demand a fresh unique drawer of it's own? How about existing settings and bookmarks and MUI settings etc. ? Does the installer handle all of this?

I had a version of 2.4 on my A1200 so when I upgraded to 2.5 I let the installer handle sorting out what to replace. It retained my settings and bookmarks.  Smooth...and the cost was amazingly reasonable for the 14 year old purchase.  Recommend it!

I have been enjoying the new iBrowse. I can get to quite a few sites that would not work under 2.4, but anything that uses certain types of encryption really slows down my machine. (At the time it was an A4000, 68060/80 Mhz. Now it is a 68040/40 Mhz with 114 MB of RAM)
I have dabbled with dialing down the encryption (cipher) settings and it does help, but many sites still cause the Amiga to slow the mouse to a crawl.
Anyone found a way around this?

If you can manage to proxy all secure network through a raspi doing all the SSL handling it should work better.

I suppose so - may as well just use my laptop for secure sites. I will stick to iBrowse for the things it is good at.

I use sslstrip on a raspi and use the raspi as a Proxy for the Amigas... so you con surf to http instead of https

I seem to remember hearing about a website that would dona similar thing - type your URL in there and it stripped  out the SSL... But I can't seem to find it now.
