Hi,

I have just recently joined this site and would like to introduce myself:


My name is Graham, I live and study in London and am 21.
My hobbies are many and varied, one of which is collecting game and computer systems.

I have had several Amiga systems since the age of eight, all pretty basic. First my parents bought me an amiga 500, followed shortly after by a 600 and then a 1200. However, software support started to lag, the companies went bankrupt and then I had to buy a PC to get on with college work etc.

I would now like to get back into the amiga scene just for recreational purposes and am interested in either buying a Amiga 4000, or upgrading my old 1200, whatever is the most feasible and cheapest option.

The intention of this email is to ask somebody if they would mind informing me what is going on in general terms on the amiga scene, the last time I touched my amiga was two years ago when i brushed past it in the attic.

My setup is as follows


Amiga 1200 (no hd)

Power CD Rom drive (external scsi)

No extra memory

Hi Graham,

As for what is going on in the Amiga scene nowadays: well, ehm, for one thing we've split up in several subscenes: (not in any particular order, mind) there is AROS, there is MorphOS on the Pegasos by Genisi, there nearly is Amiga OS4.0 on an Amigaish board, there is emulation going on.
You'll find out the details about every subscene when frequenting this site. It's great joy! We throw mud at each other, calling each other names, just for giving the the casual visitor the idea of a lively and thriving community with lotst of jest at each other. This way we hope that that casual visitor gets excited by the sheer ringing NAME the Amiga still has.
Enjoy yourselves after this short introduction. When actively participating, obey a few rules:
a) think of all the Amiga's, be they genuine or les genuine, emulated or pure, as something years ahead of its time
b) patience is a virtue highly underestimated: good things take long to materialize
c) throwing mud is only allowed after labeling each lump as "pure and clean cottonwool"

There's lots and lots going on in the amiga scene. Your options for your regulation dose of amiga experience are many.

There are

Classic 680x0 based amiga systems - the 1200, 4000 etc. You can generally expand these quite heavily and run the latest 680x0 version of the amiga os (v3.9). You can fit faster processors, extra ram, graphics cards, PCI expansion busses etc. to these to build a very capable system.

PowerPC amiga systems - A1200 or A4000 with PPC processor cards (these are the earliest examples of PPC amigas), AmigaOne and Pegasos 1/2.

The latter are fully PPC based machines, using a minimum G3 processor, AGP/PCI busses etc. on an ATX compatible motherboard. The AmigaOne is the "official" successor to the classic line and AmigaOS4 is being developed for it (still in beta phase).

The Pegasos (there is actually a pegasos 2 also) is a clone system that has been in development a bit longer and runs its own OS called "MorphOS", (technically still a beta too) which is quite mature and I believe offers very good OS3.x compatibility.

Both use emulation to support 680x0 software transparently.

Unfortunately there is quite some friction between the above platforms, which is pretty unfortunate given their obvious similarites. It's difficult to get into a discussion about these systems without it triggering a flame fest, so be careful ;-)

Next up there is AROS. The feller who first responded to your post is the guy to ask about that! It's an effort to create a cross platform AmigaOS, although I believe its fair to say it's presently most advanced on x86 systems.

Lastly there are emulations of classic 680x0 systems. Theres UAE, Amithlon etc. UAE is a standalone application that has come an amazingly long way since it first appeared.
Systems like Amithlon are related but they (IIRC) can be run on top of a mimimum bootstrap so you effectively have OS3.x booting on your PC (or whatever).

You´ve got an A1200, why not buy some stuff for it, like harddisks, accelerators etc.?
