amiga.org downtime?
« on: May 08, 2006, 05:08:45 PM »
For the last 3-4 days i have noticed that Amiga.org has stopped responding at around same time of the day each day. What happens is that i either get no response at all, or it just tries to load while it timesout. Is this a known problem??
It happened again today just an hour ago, and just started working again now..

I dont think it is on my end, as all other websites work just fine.

Yes,

had same problems today, time outs when trying to access amiga.org site through afternoon in UK.
Just prior to this attempt I couldn't log in - kept getting Xoops?? internal errors when clicking on login.

I just noticed the problem today. Must have been visiting at the good times. Wayne is aware of the issue. For some reason the database server is abnormally very busy to the point that it is missing requests.
Stay tuned...

The problem can be summed up like this;

92 user(s) are online

Members: 33
Guests: 59

What this means is that at any given time, hundreds of connections are being made to the database for Amiga.org, and even more when you consider the fact that the site is not alone on the server.  Every dynamic site has this problem as they get more and more popular.

I'm discussing it right now with the planetxoops guys and they  might recommend that we move to a dedicated server.  If that happens, we might be in a bit of a pickle due to the expense involved.

Sorry for the inconvenience this is causing folks, but let's just wait and see, shall we? It's not as though there are dozens of alternatives.

I see a lot of those posts are in UK, Greece, Norway, etc. During the night GMT -0600 our time, the nightly backups run which halt your sql database for a few minutes to backup the data. Depending on the size of your database,
this can be real quick or real long.

That's the only explanation I can think of for it happening around the same time every day.

The backups start around 1am our time, I don't know at what time it gets to your account, but this is late evening over there where those people are.

Also, I'm working on building a dedicated MySQL box for you and another high traffic database site on that server. This should help your throughput a lot on the SQL side of your site.

Give me a week or two to get that going.

We could always try and kidnapp Kees'socks. I remember they were quite popular in the day. I'm sure they'd fetch a hefty price.  :-P
