Amiga 1538S
« on: March 12, 2005, 09:46:33 PM »
Is the Amiga 1538S monitor good? Right know, i've a Commodore 1942 monitor. I'm not so happy with it becouse:

* There's scanlines on the screen that are visible when you sit ½ meter from the screen. (only when playing games)

* You have to change the H and V all the time! When you start playing games, when starting the game itself in some games (Turrican III) and when changing to Workbench! All this changing of the H and V position are makin' me crazy!

* It doesn't have scart or the yellow video cable support.

Does the Amiga 1538S monitor fix some of this problem? Is around 23 USD ($) a good price?

I don't think the 1538 addresses any of the problems you have with the C=1942.

* AFAIK, the scanlines are just part of 15khz mode when displayed on a 30khz capable screen.  I've seen them on every true multisync.  Even the Idek Ilyama 15-30khz monitors had quite noticible scanlines when in 15khz mode.

* It's still analog controls, so you're still going to be figiting with the H and V every time you switch sync.

* It still has only a HD15 or DB23 connector.  No SCART or Composite inputs, according to Amiga-hardware.com.

Still.... $23 is a pretty cheap price for a true multisync nowadays.  I'd probably pick it up and toss it in my spares closet at that price.

The 1538 is a 15" monitor with a wider freq range vs the
1942.  The 1942 was a 14" at best.  It also had some
problems with one or two of the AGA screenmodes, I just
don't remember which ones.  Check out www.amiga-hardware.com
it may contain more info.

The 1942 is the same size as most 1084s. It's a Bi-Sync monitor, meaning it can do frequencies around 15KHz and frequencies around 31KHz. It has trouble with stuff in between, so Super72 (24KHz) is out.

I'd definitely snatch the 1538 for that price - true multisyncs like that are the best monitor to have for non-graphics card Amigas. You can use any native screenmode, and it's definitely good to have a spare. Monitors like that certainly aren't getting any more common or cheaper. I asked Microvitec for a quote on their current 15KHz-capable multisync, and it's well over the $1000 range for a single unit (intended for industrial bulk purchases).

On another note, changing your Workbench Overscan prefs might help eliminate your Horizontal and Vertical centering adjustments.
