Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like they wish their life away for new products like this?

Also, can someone point me to an update, or summary of the Natami project?  Yesterday I visited the official site and the latest news item was from May 2010.

Go to the news section of the forum, just like they say.  They are not updating the primary news section for some reason.

So if it runs on Windows and OSX, is it just an SDL title then? Seems like it'd be more interesting and more impressive to have a NatAmi exclusive that really shows what the hardware can do...

The Windows, Mac, and Linux versions are using SDL.  It is being written as a demo for the NatAmi though.  The idea is that, since it is written using the 194x engine, it will be easy to develop 2D shoot-'em-up games with the engine.

Huh, okay. Be fun to see how this turns out.

while this looks really cool, I would really think twice about releasing new hardware with games containing copyrighted assets. When NatAmi launches, you can bet Ars Technica and Slashdot will cover it. You do not want Lucasarts getting wind of it coming with a star wars game.

no, i think he is right. while it might go unnoticed or be marked as not worth consideration (for the time being). companies sometimes act berserk when it comes to what they consider their ip. in any case when launching natami as a product i would avoid any such potential obstacles, just in case, it would turn out more succesful than anyone expects.

I agree with the copyright concerns. The game is meant to be a tech demo/template for our shoot'em up SDK, which will show how to make use of Natamis new graphic capabilities.

While LucasArts usually are OK with game mods and PD fan games and such, I think it would be better if we provided this as a separate download and not distribute it with Natami. We are certainly not trying to "make money" out of someone elses IP, and we do not want the copyright holders to think so.

Agreed.  Even if the 3D ship models etc. are freely available, certainly the Star Wars name and Star Wars logos are not to be used, right?  There is already one company that tries to get away with whatever they can (C=USA) -- don't follow in their unethical footsteps, IMO.

(As if respecting other's copyrights should be looked down upon?)  And it may actually be an important issue in the case of the new Natami release.

Even the ship designs are copyright. I would not even use screenshots of this in relation to NatAmi promotional material. I've done some work on LucasArts IP, their lawyers are litigation crazy.

mfilos: It's friendly advice from someone who's done some work for them, that's all. I want NatAmi to be a success as much as the next man (or cammy).

Maybe someone could provide some alternate, non-Star Wars graphic assets? I'd even be willing to take a crack at it if nobody else is.

Copyright issues are Thomas/Gunnar's and whoever else messes with the Natami Project concern and not mine to care. I just made a point since I'm kinda sick of listening about terms of copyright in this forum so often.
I totally respect the work and time of developers and vendors (that's why I have registered MUI, HSMathLibs, WHDLoad, WarpDT, MorphOS 2.x and every Amiga Version) but this is getting rather silly.

I think I need to change my Avatar as well since Nintendo might sue my a$$ on the spot :D
