Title: Purchasing the CD or Legal Digital Download of AmigaOS for WinUAE
Post by: BebertBocal-1 on July 15, 2013, 02:08:41 PM
As far as I have understood, Amiga Forever, AmiKit and AmigaSYS do not come with any version of AmigaOS but the only way of purchasing AmigaOS is to buy the CD. Is this correct?

I would like to purchase some version of AmigaOS that can be run on WinUAE, and I could buy the CD for this purpose. The OS will most likely be 3.9 provided that it is the newest version supported by the emulator. However, apologies for this complete newbie question but are PC CD-/DVD-/BD-ROMs even able to read the files on an AmigaOS CD?

I have nothing against purchasing the CD per se but I have chosen digital download options whenever I have been able to do so. That's why I wonder whether AmigaOS (e.g. version 3.9) could be purchased as a digital download anywhere. I mean legally, of course! I went through the Amiga webstores listed at http://www.amigaos.net/content/4/where-buy and the more country-specific listing of resellers at http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=36 but in case I did not miss anything, I could not spot any options for purchasing a legal download of the OS on any of the websites.

Easiest way is this: http://www.amigaforever.com/

You could also buy Amiga OS 3.9 CD's from http://amigakit.co.uk or http://vesalia.de but you would still need to buy a copy of the 3.1 ROMs unless you already own a physical set of ROMs which would allow you to download it from a torrent or similar.

edit:  Amiga Forever doesn't actually contain Amiga OS 3.9 as they have no legal right to distribute it.

The cheapest would be to buy AmigaForever Essentials on android and copy the files from com.cloanto.amigaforever.essentials folder to your pc, although you would not get a modern version of AmigaOS this way.

On our website we also sell copies of Amiga Forever bundled with our rock solid Linux distribution, OS4 OpenLinux.  We sell you the Linux distribution and Amiga Forever for $115.00 which is a pretty good deal for what you get.

This comes with a legal copy of Amiga Forever and the AmigaOS ROMS and OS system files.

100+ notes for a cobbled together respin of Mint/Ubuntu? :roflmao:

Anyone would be forgiven for thinking the OP's account was created just so you could come in a spam our forum with ads for your ripoff tripe.

CUSA mk2 with even less to offer, in fact even Merlancia was a better class of swindle.

Or they could grab Mint or Ubuntu for free and buy the cheapie version of AF for $10.  Or nick the ROM's and images off TPB like everyone else does, lol.  I've paid for WB and KS 5 times over in my lifetime, I had no qualms about grabbing such files for use with an emulator when my WB disks were of no use on my PC.

$115 for a reworked distro is insanity.  What exactly are the value adds to warrant a $100+ Linux distro, if you don't mind me asking?

Multi-forum spamming seems to be the general gist of it.

Yes.  I use a CD to transfer files between my PC and Amiga all the time.  Make it re-writeable and you can dump files downloaded on the PC onto it then read them back on the Amiga, that's how I get everything onto my Miggy without having to waste a whole stack of 'em.  I remember back in the mid '90s when PC CD's started becoming more common, it was always fun to pop them into my Amiga and see what sort of pictures/video files/sound files I could rip off them.  ;)

Only issue you might have is with long filenames.  If I can remember to do it tonight I'll throw my 3.9 CD into my PC and confirm that everything is readable, but just off-hand I'd say 99% certainly.

Thanks for the replies!

I made the decision to buy the actual CD. Since 4.0 and above are not supported by any emulator (at least so it seems) the version of the OS will be 3.9. I guess I'll follow the installation instructions at http://elite79.tripod.com/os39uae/ or at http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/os39xl.html

The OS seems to look pretty neat (but not before adjusting the screenmode preferences)!

Good luck!   Personally, I'd recommend Amikit once you get the 3.9 physical media.  Works very well and all it needs is 3.5 or 3.9.  Pop the CD in your optical drive when it asks for it and you are ready to roll.

Amikit is a terrific piece of kit that gets nowhere near the props it should, IMHO.

Seems like a sound plan (and luckily, AmiKit is freeware). However, I'm not sure if I can use it right away after getting the CD as I intend to do a lot of file extraction before doing anything else. Please see a recent thread that I started on the topic at http://amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?p=741115#post741115

As I explained in the thread, I would like to retain all the Amiga file attributes when I extract my Amiga archives. Will the Amiga file attributes be retained/preserved when I extract my .lzx and .lha archives on AmiKit? I'm not entirely sure how AmiKit really works in this respect.

Of course.

Yup!  Buy Amiga Forever and download the FREE AMIKIT installer that works hand in hand with AF and you'll be set.  I have a hard time getting on my real miggy since Amikit is so smooth and runs almost everything I throw at it.
