Anyone tried Linux+Amiga+Games?
« on: July 20, 2004, 10:05:09 PM »
Alittle cryptic subject, but what I'm trying to find out is if anyone tried.. say, Counterstrike on a Linux installed Amiga with CyberstormPPC? :-)
Mainframe: Amiga 3000 Tower, CSPPC233/060, 144+2MB, 36GB UW, Prometheus, Voodoo5 5500, 10Mbit, 24xCDr, OS 4.0 ....Amiga since 1987.

Unless it's specificly compiled for the Amiga platform there's really no chance for it to run other then through emulation.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Aha, so it isn't enough that it is for Linux it needs to be compiled for AmigaLinux?

Anyway is the only way

Yeah...  Well, Linux stuff can be distributed in two ways.

Linux sourcecode installs SHOULD be portable to any Linux platform with possibly only some minor changes in your configure stage.

But Linux binaries only work on the platform they were compiled for.  And, being closed source, most games are distributed as x86 binaries only.

Ok then, here's what you do.

1) Install PPC Linux.

2) Download Bochs.  Configure, compile.

3) Install either Windows or Linux (whichever you need for your games) in the emulated x86 provided by Bochs.  Windows in a Bochs!  Get it?  Damn that's funny.

4) Profit!!

Well ok, so this won't be nearly fast enough to run anything but minesweeper.  But on a Sun Ultra 5 it was fast enough to run Win 98 :-)

To make your head explode, run UAE on your emulated x86 machine.

I've seen Myth 2 running quite well on an AmigaOne during Amiga Alpe Adria last year. There aren't many more games for LinuxPPC, sadly.

Go for Majesty.
I received it for free with my amigaone and it is a great game, different from any other RTS. It works fine and the intro is very good.
