FS-UAE in Linux slow

Hi guys!

I'm trying to use FS-UAE in Linux and I'm finding it a little (lot) slower than WinUAE.

I'm running this on a P4 single core with 3GB RAM running at 2.8Ghz.

It's a dual-boot WindowsXP and Linux (Lubuntu) system.  Under WindowsXP WinUAE runs blazingly fast.  I use it as a high-productivity Amiga.  I run 3d modelling (Lightwave), graphics (ImageFX) and music recording stuff on it.  RTG is a must for me, and it runs really well under with the WinUAE setup.

Since I've installed Lubuntu, I installed the FS-UAE emulator.  It is very slick and I enjoy the interface a lot.  It seems to run basic games very well.

But, I took my "virtual hard drive" file-system directory from WinUAE and copied it over to my Linux partition.  I set up a configuration for an emulated A4000 with lots of ram and RTG (Picasso 96) enabled.

I attached the folder containing my Amiga hard drive contents to the emulator and everything boots up just fine like in WinUAE, but it's VERY slow in comparison. I notice it starts to get slow when it tries to boot AmiDock (Amiga OS3.9) and load the wallpaper backdrop.  This takes over a minute for each.  It only takes a few seconds with WinUAE.

Icon rendering within drawers also takes longer than WinUAE.

So I'm just wondering what could be wrong - I understand that FS-UAE is based on WinUAE developments.  Both emulators are running the same Amiga hard drive setup, but one is slow.

I didn't see a JIT setting in FS-UAE...maybe this is the problem?  I use JIT in WinUAE....

I tried FS-UAE and it just crashed. There should be original UAE available also.
That worked fast for me.

if you have a spare usb stick you could try aminux. FS-UAE is running there with Jit enabled

Got to be something simple. Check the priority.

I enabled JIT in FS-UAE which is a line of text you have to add to the "custom configuration" section of FS-UAE.  This helps quite a bit, but it's still not quite as fast a WinUAE.

How do I set the priority?

Go into System Monitor and check the "nice" column.
It should be zero by default.

FS-UAE is slow, and you can't do much about it. WinUAE is the fastest UAE incarnation atm, even under Linux (running in WINE). Look at the "lame AKsack.wav" benchmarks I made a while back.

That is the lame benchmark on the Linux host itself, without using UAE.

There's a major bug in FS-UAE where it suffers from slowdowns under these exact circumstances. The author isn't using RTG himself, so it went unnoticed for a while.

Check the FS-UAE threads on EAB, they were trying to narrow it down a while ago. I don't know what the current status is.
