Amiga prices - 17 years later!
« on: November 12, 2002, 03:51:09 PM »
I just happened to pull out my Amiga price list from 1985. Its from:

CHAMBERS COMPUTER SUPPLIES
252 Swanston Street
Melbourne, 3001
(Viatel Price Page 222931)

(( All prices are Australian Dollars ))

The LIST price for an A1000 is $3500. Thats close to $1000 MORE than the price I'm paying for my mid-range 'M' System which is comparable to current Mac hardware.

Other prices:

° An A1050 256K RAM expansion cartridge is priced at $575.
° The A1080 "Hi-res" RGB digital/analog + NTSC color monitor is $1295.
° A1010 External 3.5" FDD: $850.
° A1020 External 5¼" FDD: $1150.
° A1400 MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface): $149.
° Textcraft word processor is $299.
° General Ledger: $299.
° Accounts Receivable: $299.
° Accounts Payable: $299.
° Electronic Point-Of-Sale: $299.
° Telecraft (Communications and terminal emulation): $299.
° Amiga Pascal: $500.
° Amiga "C" 68000 C language compiler: $850.
° Amiga Assembler: $550.
° Amiga LISP: $550.
° Amiga Graphicraft: $275.
° Amiga Musicraft: $275.
° Musicraft Pro: $550.

Then the Australian Dollar equaled $0.70 US currency.
Now the Australian Dollar is worth about $0.56 US!

What 17 years can do to technology, AND prices!

Yup and i thought I was getting a bargain when I bought my A501 (512K for A500) for $150.

That's how the computer industry is. I remember 10Meg HDs for the C64 being advertised for ~$2000. A buddy of mine says he remembers Apple advertising from the late 70's for a 1Meg HD for the Apple II for a "bargain" $12000 :-o
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

Oh, I remember that one. Man, it sucked pretty bad :-D

@carls

Yes, Textcraft was absolutely crazy.  My parents used to use Textcraft all the time.  My mother especially would curse the Amiga based on her Textcraft experiences.  I  recall that when we bought a 1 meg sideslot expansion module the original Textcraft completely stopped working.  Apparently "it couldn't handle all that extra RAM".  Sounds like bad coding to me.  Anyway, we eventually purchased Textcraft Plus, which fixed some of the issues (like the RAM problem) but my mother still cursed its name.

Many of the earlier WP' for Amiga were dire.
Recall:
° Kindwords
° Kindwords II
° Scribble
° PenPal
° Excellence?

The FIRST DPaint (III) I bought was $199 or $299?

-The first REPLACEMENT HDD I bought for my A2000HD (850Mb Quantum)
cost about $550. It was bought to replace the original 50Mb Quantum which still worked the last time I used it. Still using that Quantum TRB850S as a fourth drive.

I think the MOST expensive Amiga periferal I ever read the price was the Rambrandt Graphics board/s, which came on TWO boards....over $4000US?
Harliquin boards were pricey as well.
