Post by: Zener on May 25, 2010, 05:07:18 PM
Tracker Hero is a free musical game for the Amiga that uses MOD song files.

It can be downloaded from Aminet: http://aminet.net/package/game/misc/TrackerHeroAGA

Is there a way to add extra modules to it?

(apologies if that's explained in the download, I haven't checked)

You can also get an adapter from  http://www.synthdreams.com/psx64.php from the guys who made Shredz64 for the C64.

Ps. Tracker Hero Rocks. Its hard on a keyboard so I am gonna get me a guitar :P

Yes, you need to copy the mod to the game and create a "dat" file with the supplied dat editor.

But even easier: there are actually more dats in the datas folders than songs, so you can search the mods on the net and add MODs of songs like We're the Devils, Monkey Island, Lotus 2, Big in Japan and more...

Just played this for the 1st time. Very good. I will have to load up some mods of songs I know - makes it easier to get in the groove.

The highscore table was the only confusing bit for me, after setting the first letter, I couldn't seem to successfully move to the next letter and select one.

Also, is it something I am doing or after the first play, selecting another track brings up the highscore table again BEFORE even playing that round!

Apart from that the game is attractive, responsive and addictive - what else could you want?

Also happens to me. In my case it seems to be random somehow. Sometimes happens, sometimes not.

I would also like to have some more deep info about how the dat editor works. It almost do everything itself (which is awesome!) but I'm not sure if selecting instruments makes any difference or what does the Beat Ins selector actually do.

Does this game work with an CD32 controller so the four coloured buttons works as the "guitar" buttons? Hopefully someone understands what I'm trying to ask :).

And where do you find the mod's that have the dat files already in the "datas" drawer? Especially the turrican2_intro.mod.dat file confuses me, since the turrican2 soundtrack is not originally in .mod format.

Thanks

The author of this game has asked me to use it as part of the Amiga Game Competition at this weekend's AmiWest 2010 Show.  I have found someone that can bring a PS2 guitar to the show, but he only has the C64 adapter, not Paul's Amiga adapter.  Is there anyone available that can send me an adapter to use at the show?  I will mail it back to you on Monday after the show is over.

Thanks,

too bad you can not even use of joystick !

it is either keyboard (ouch) (can not modify), CD32 controller or PS2 guitar...

although it is seems a nice game, what about a 2 players version ? is it planned ? :-)

Dave, as it says on the website, the Toni Westbrook PSX64 adapter will probably work.

Both adapters work through the joystick port.

The controls supported in this version are:

-Keyboard
-CD32 pad
-PS2 adapter + PS2 guitar
-PS2 adapter + PS2 dance mat

The PS2 adapter tested is the one made by Paul Willingham. I'm not sure how other adapter will work, maybe the mapping is not the same or they don't support CD32 buttons.

Is anybody knows how PSX64 maps the PSX pad buttons to the Amiga please let me know!

I guess people don't even read the thread, this has already been discussed.

THE SHREDZ64 ADAPTER DOES NOT WORK WITH TRACKER HERO!!!

If you all wait a few more weeks AmigaManiac.com will be selling the correct, fully-compatible adapter based on Paul Willingham's design. I don't know if it's such a good idea to contact Paul for an adapter anymore since he will probably be busy with the first batch of 50 PIC chips which will be used in the bulk lot of adapters that are being made for AmigaManiac.com.

I really hope someone who already has the correct PS2-CD32 adapter can donate it for use at the games competition at AmiWest, Tracker Hero is a great game to play with a group of people, and if you guys bring your kids along they'll almost certainly know how to play it straight away and hopefully have fun with it too.
Title: Re: Tracker Hero AGA Beta released
Post by: Cammy on October 20, 2010, 11:00:13 PM
The Shredz64 adapter can only emulate a 1-button joystick, so I'm guessing it either uses some data-polling which is interpreted by the Shredz64 game as the different buttons, or it remaps each of the buttons to a direction on the stick. It would probably be possible to write support for the interface into Tracker Hero but until it's directly supported, it won't work.

Yes, I read your earlier post.  However, that was in reference to the CD32.  It's time to experiment with the PSX64, Guitar Hero guitar, and the Amiga 1200/4000.

I heard about this thread from Robert, and I just wanted to pop in to say what the PSX64 Interface (The one I made for C64/Amiga/Atari/etc, the one that works with Shredz64) does and doesn't do, specifically in regards to what might be useful for Tracker Hero.  I'm not trying to plug my product, so I'm not going to go through all the features (macros and other crap) or anything, but I do think collaboration is always a good thing, and we should be helping and sharing with each other.

When a normal controller (non-guitar) is plugged in, it does:

1. Work on a Atari style DB-9 computer, so C64, Atari, Amiga, SMS, etc
2. Support two buttons on two button systems (Amiga).
3. Maps directions to directions, X to fire 1, Square to fire 2

When a guitar controller is plugged in, it does:
1. Map the colors Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange in order of U, D, L, R, Fire 1
2. Map no strum to Pot 1 value of 90, strum up to value of 47, strum down to value of 21
3. Map whammy to Pot 2 (from 45->80 or so in values)
4. Map lifting the guitar up to pot 2 (overrides whammy value with 20).

It doesn't (in either mode):
1.  Support the CD32 protocol.

By making use of the pot lines, you can encode more data as well as support the fluid motions of the whammy bar.  Besides being the only method of getting more info to the C64 than what is supported by digital buttons, I figured this was the best way to go.

Anyway, if that works for Tracker Hero, that's great, and if not, that's no problem too.  I'd love to help to get support for it into the program, but if the interest isn't there, that's fine too.  I'm easy - I just don't want this to be a sore point for anyone.  I did this to do something neat and make friends in the retro community.

Title: Re: Tracker Hero AGA Beta released
Post by: Zener on October 21, 2010, 06:15:35 AM
Thanks Cammy and Megaboz for all the useful info!

In theory PSX64 will work fine with Tracker Hero when using the PS2 guitar if in the game you turn on the Dance Mat Mode (Not the Guitar Mode). This is because PSX64 maps guitar buttons to directions and in the Dance Mat Mode directions are mapped to the game actions.

The real problem could be that the directions are not matched in the same order, making it difficult to play. But this issue is easy to fix in the code adding another control option.

Megaboz or anybody, if you know the exact mapping of the guitar buttons to the pad directions please write it down :)

Thanks!

because it does not play mod files? I'm a massive fan of game music and demo's and i'd like to play them. Also, there's a lot of other tracks that guitar hero does not have, I have some fine prodigy/front242 and bauhaus mod remixes. You can't get them on guitar hero.

Cool!  Basically, I just went in order of the buttons with UDLRFire, so its:

Green = Up
Red = Down
Yellow = Left
Blue = Right
Orange = Fire 1

(And then strumming/whammy/lift on the pot lines)

Hopefully that order works out of the box!

I just found out that my friend who has a PS2 guitar and C64 adapter and was going to bring them to AmiWest to test on my A1200 & Tracker Hero has had his PS2 guitar damaged by his cat.  If anyone else has a PS2 guitar and can bring it to the AmiWest 2010 Show, it would be appreciated.  The C64 adapter did not appear to work properly, but I do not know exactly which adapter it is, so I am also still looking for an adapter that will work with the PS2 guitar and my A1200 to play Tracker Hero at the AmiWest show.

Strum signals are sent to the Pot X register on Paula.  Also, because of the variable nature of the resistance, I usually program in a +- 10 range for reading the values, so 80-100 is rest, 37-57 is strum up, and 11-31 is strum down.  Hope that helps -

I tried it out - first off, game looks great, nice job!  The PSX64 support looks like its almost there - in keyboard mode it works fine (e.g. button ordering is correct), but in guitar mode the strum isn't working.  I verified the adapter was putting out the expected pot values and it was.  Let me know if I can do anything else.

Heh, Amiga_Nut, you went too far back! This is more of a case of Amigans! If you read the whole thread, you get the full picture of what Amigans can do when they act positivly to a situation. Alow me to explain in a wrap up...

Zener: It doesn't?

Megaboz : It doesn't?

Cammy: No! Several have tried and it deosn't work correctly, please stop telling people to buy it for this game.

Zener: Wow! didn't know that, thanks. Hey Megaboz, can you send me the specs for your adapter?

Megaboz: Sure! check your PMs.

(a few hours later)
Zener: ok, Megaboz, try this build.

Megaboz: works except the strum.

Zener: Ok. I'm on it.

And all this for a PD game! So thanks all y'all for being so proactive and working together. THIS is what makes the Amiga community so great...

Wow, I've seen this issue before. At first sight it looks like a problem setting the display in the menus, I have to take a loot at the code. Seems fixable :)

The good news is that the strum with PSX64 is already working. It works fine ingame but not on the menus yet.

Saw this on the site I get Xbox modding stuff from and thought anyone interested in this game would like to get one.  I don' have one nor have I used it, so I can't vouch for it's quality, but hey, for $15 it's a steal...

The new version is good news!  I'd like to present Tracker Hero at next year's Blockparty in Cleveland, Ohio.

That means I'd have to lug the Guitar Hero guitar on the plane,

Looks like the sync is broken when playing the game on NTSC. It will be fixed on the next update.
