Amiga 2000 Ram Expansion
« on: August 15, 2019, 11:54:47 PM »
Hello.
If I add a Z2 Ram Expansion to my A2000, how will it recognize it with a 68000 installed?
Less than 8 megabyte or equal to 8 meg I under stand.
How about 16 meg or greater?

no not really,

I know about the 2 chip memory plus 8 fast memory auto config space, I know about addmem but I don't know what the zorro 2 is?

I have learned that 8mb is the max for Zorro2. I would need an accelerator with 32 bit memory to get more.
How many address lines does Z2 have?

This would be 24 bit (lines), so the range goes upto 16MB, including I/O space etc..Memory expansion is indeed limited to 8, or 9.5? MBytes.

Interestingly Z3 uses the same connector, but has to multiplex some of the address lines for obvious reasons.

Edit
Hurray, one hundred posts. ;D

I need to compare the Memory Maps of different Amigas. I assume each add-in card gets enough memory space to send and receive data and address information. I am not sure if there is a place for commands like a C64 REU.

I got my A2000 in the mail today.
She is rough, but I think she will be okay.
I had to put an A500 1.3 Kickstart I had from a while back.
She did not have one, and that is why I got a black mono screen.
So far all chips seem to work. I have clean another mother board of a leaky battery.

Why? And what is a C64 REU?

You can plug in as many cards as you like until the 8MB are filled up. If you put in a newer Kickstart you can check the status of the cards in the bootmenu.

The C64 Ram Expansion Unit reference is about how the external ram access the C64 memory, I believe, in a DMA style.
AS far as the Memory Maps are concerned, how did Commodore expand past the 68000 in to the 68020, etc. cpus.
Multiple Z2 and Z3 cards could have possibly more memory combined than what the 68000 could address.
If I remember correctly, there is Port Mapped and Memory Mapped I/O in a system.
Each Z2 card is held in suspension until it gets its own memory address.
I do not know how many bytes each card gets.

You can use ShowConfig while a card is plugged in, or SysInfo for that matter.
They will report the address space used.
also showboards comes to mind, but i don't know if this works with Kick1.3.

If you don't add more then one RAM card and one gfx card, you will run out of slots before you run out of address space. :)

I hope the C64 REU reference did not lower any Amiga Points. :)

Not at all. :)

If you can source a cheap reliable 020 or 030 turbo card, grab that very hard. The feeling compared to a standard A2000/A500 is like day vs night.

There is a Supra accelerator on ebay, it does not have any memory on it that I can tell.
I will have to wait.
