Keyboard issues in Cannon Fodder
« on: September 29, 2016, 10:15:14 AM »
Hi!

I've been playing Cannon Fodder on my A2000, which is every bit as fun as I remember - but I can't seem to make it recognize my keyboard, which is making saving the game impossible.

I've got some new blank 2DD floppies which it will format (after some persuasion - I presume my drives are a little old). But on trying to save, it asks me for a name. I can usually type one character, but then it refuses to let me type any more or proceed. I can exit the save screen and carry on playing, but no keyboard inputs have any noticeable effect - I can't pause or surrender.

I'm using an A2630 with a 68030; I've tried disabling caches in the early startup menu to no avail. I also have an A2091 with a hard drive and CD-RW attached - I'm booting from floppy as I don't have the chip RAM to WHDLoad.

My keyboard works fine in Workbench and other software seems to recognize it as well.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Are these Cannon Fodder disks originals or cracked copies? If cracked copies then behaviour like that wouldn't suprise me at all (crackers joke etc). IIRC Cannon Fodder works on any config straight from the disks, from 68000 to 68060.

They're original disks, as far as I can tell - from original boxes with their labels silkscreened on.

Plenty of games have trouble with Cherry keyboards - the games violate the HRM timings because it worked on an A500. I know, I still have my 2000 kb. You will typically be able to do one single keypress before it locks up.

Try to look for a WHDLoad version and see if that has a kb timing fix.

That's exactly the issue I'm having - is there a way to tell which keyswitches are in my keyboard?

Unfortunately the WHDLoad installer I've found for CF requires more than 1MB chip RAM, which presently is the max I have in my A2000.

I can't help with your problem but I can confirm Cannon Fodder WHDLoad requires 1.1MB of Chip ram.

Are you using a stock Amiga 2000 keyboard?

Yep - it's an early one with red Amiga keys.

And square F-keys? (I think the other versions have wider F-keys. Anyone?)

I wasn't aware of old Cherry keyboard issues. They must be quite rare then? Bad luck grabbing an A2000 with one of those...

Could always replace it though. :)
