Is Payback Warp3d playable on 68040 MMU?
« on: September 14, 2017, 08:48:03 PM »
Hi friends,

I just have a quick question, not to go too in-depth -- I've recently acquired Payback and updated it to 7 from Aminet. Whilst the game plays brilliantly with the software renderer, the hardware acceleration is a bit of a slide show. I'm sure the setup is using hardware as the performance is the same in 320x240 as it is all the way up to 1024x768.

The Warp3d is functioning well - BlitzQuake and Descent work great (Blitz has some errant polygons but this must be settings-oriented?) Gears demo is fine.

Hardware is Amiga 1200, full 040 @ 40Mhz, 64MB RAM, Voodoo3 3000, Mediator (the original one), and if it's worth mentioning I also have the RTL3189D 100Mbps NIC and SoundBlaster 128. Exec is reloc'd to fast RAM and 68040 is initialised with RemApollo.

So the question is - in anyone's experience the Payback game playable with hardware acceleration on a 68040/40?

Q: I've got a Voodoo3. Why can't I get the Warp3D version of Payback to work?
A: Voodoo3 has a maximum texture size of 256x256 and Update 4 used textures larger than this. Download the latest update to fix this problem.

My Payback does work with Warp - it's just really really slow - like 3FPS. The payback version is on update 7. I expected the same or better performance than the software renderer on voodoo3 at 320x400, so I suspect something is not quite right. But thanks for the infos!

For the record, Payback is absolutely fantastical! I haven't had this much fun with an Amiga game since SlamTilt.

Would it be smooth and fun on a 060 with Picasso IV?

With an 060 I get satisfactory speeds in 320x200 under AGA and CGX (CV64/3D).

VERY fun game!
