Amiga games you like more than they deserve?
« on: July 22, 2011, 08:22:17 PM »
Been a while..

Let's talk about amiga games that you objectively know aren't all that great, but you liked them anyways.

A few to kick the discussion off:

Dogs of War - Pretty much a terrible ikari warriors clone. Yet, with 2 players, we wasted hours on this thing.

Death mask - terrible controls, terrible graphics, terrible sounds. Wasted hours in 2 player on this one too.

Amiga versions of Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat. GUess the console versions were faster and better but we still had a good time. Not sure if these count since we didn't have a console at the time though.

I would just say the only real reason the console versions of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were better than the Amiga versions is due to only having one (or even two) buttons on the Amiga.

Graphics may have been slightly better on the SNES, Genesis, but at least Mortal Kombat didn't have purple blood or 'sweat'.

Can we also mention games we want to love, but either suck at so we hate them, or they are just too difficult for their own damn good?

I'd put Shadow of the Beast in that category!

I do love Xenon 2, probably a bit more than it deserves.

Final Fight - It was just awesome to be able to play this at home.
Blood Money - Although disk1 (intro) got more use than disk2
Sword of Sodan - Again, mostly for its amazing graphics

Oh come now, it deserves love for the sound track alone. I played that through two grands worth of stereo and it was AWESOME! Now you've gone and reminded me about it I'm gonna have to play it again.

The first game of this type that comes to mind...

Super Bob Dylan on Aminet.

A totally horrible looking, but fun and true to form Super Mario clone on Aminet.

I remember many years ago Radio 1 announced that it would be transmitting the Xenon 2 theme tune as an experiment in "pseudo surround sound" one Saturday night... :)

Me and the mates all gathered in my bedroom with the hi fi tuned to Radio 1 and the speakers placed at roughly six feet either side as instructed, then the music started and gawd were we disappointed, two people reckon they heard the occasional bit of base that sounded like it came from behind them while the other four of us never heard a thing... :(

Suffice to say after the DJ was inundated with angry listeners asking if this was a wind up they never played that tune again... :-)

As for the game itself, even though it was pretty naff I still played it quite often, dunno why I did but that's what this thread is about... :)

PS: Days Of Thunder has to be the worst Amiga game of all time, there is nothing good that can be said about that piece of crap... :)

I don't think I liked any game on the Amiga more than it deserved to be honest... ..I have completed Chaos Engine about 40 odd times, but it deserves it.

@Franko, LMAO,I had loads of bass on that game but it was an awesome stereo I used. Shame it belonged to my (now long time in the past ex) girlfriend.

Never been a big fan of Amiga games but Typhoon Thomson is one I go back to every now and then just to see if I can actually get anywhere in it, it's one of those games where the controls are awful but you just have to go back to try and get a bit further to see what comes next... :)

I actually liked, and still like, most of the games that I am supposed to like more than they deserve.
I still enjoy SotB.  Yes, it's really hard.
Same with Blood Money.
And Dragon's Lair too..

I personally think people are too hard on them, because they want them to be pure action games.
They aren't.  They are memory / reflex games, and I like those...

I also like Sword of Sodan.  Yeah, it has it's faults, but one of my favorite arcade games was Gladiator, and it was the closest I could find.  ;-)
I remember accidentally booting the Amiga when disk 3(???) was in and it booted and displayed.. something kual...  Can't remember what now..  ;-) I have to find an image and try that again...
