But doesn't Amiga QII use the same pak files etc as PC QII.

I know for QI all you need is the PC version unpacked on your Amiga along with one file called AmigaQuake (or similar).  It's the same with the Doom games.

QII should be the same, get the PC version, unpack it (or install it on the PC and copy the dir to the Miggy) and use the Amiga QII exe.  If you can find the Amiga QII exe.

The specs for this game says it will run on a 060. Any tried this? Is it actually playable even at the lowest resolution?

BTW is it possible to play Quake 1 smoothly on a 060. Looks like crap to me unless I go into Tetris mode  :-D

I used to run Quake 1 on my 50MHz 060 A4000D. I had a CyberVision3D card (Virge DX GPU), so I had to keep the resolution down below 640x480 (I liked 480x360... that was pretty nice). It ran rather well, but it did it's own drawing. It didn't use hardware 3D... which was good because the CV3D was a real dog. Quake 2 was where id switched to relying on hardware 3D.

how well wil it run on a Blizzie 240 with 256 mb ram + Bvison or is it better to use a voodoo 3 card for such.

To my knowledge there was never a Q2.exe officially released as Amiga-freeware, only a commercial release from Hyperion. So no way of "finding" it.

@adonay,

The CPU is fine. Way plenty for Q2. The BVision is a Permedia 2 GPU, and while it isn't as good as the Voodoo3, it should be fine for Q2 as long as you don't harbor ridiculous expectations, like doing 60FPS at 1280x1024. The benches I've seen on PCs are 20-30FPS at 640x480.

The Permedia 2 was meant to compete with the Voodoo2, with the Permedia 3 competing with the Voodoo3.

By the way, Quake 3 does run on the Permedia 2, but generally only at about 1/2 to 2/3 the speed of Q2 with the same settings. With the release of the Q3 code last summer, maybe the Amiga might see a version sometime this coming year.

actually that wasn't a commercial release, Quake II was GPL'ed, the source code is available on aminet, I'll upload the exe's to aminet later today when I come home (the main exe's and the dll's the actual data you have to find yourselves :-) ).

Is this the PPC-version you are referring to? Who coded it? If I remember correctly, Hyperion also did a 68k version of Q2 that was available as an update to registered users.

that would be great trgse :-D I finally got a translation of the german read me for the warp Q2.exe

Quote
QUAKE2 Port v0.5 (W3D PPC)

Copy QUAKE2 file please in drawer BASEQ2 and a BASEQ2: produce assign.

per Shell with:

stuck 1000000 QUAKE2

Open QUAKE2.

HP: if the screen grey remain should set please the gl_fashions in the file config. cfg on zero (set gl_fashion "0")

In FastFileSystem set the Buffer on 1500

But I have had no joy in getting it to work, All that i get is I run the q2 exe and it takes 10meg of memory and does nothing. What does he mean by a BASEQ2: produce assign ????

This version was created by Frank Menzel

So is the version from trgse a different one than the old one (2002) from Frank Menzel?

I am unable to find the quake2.lha somewhere on the net. Frank  also removed it from his website.

Played Quake 2 on my A4000 with csppc+mediator+voodoo 3 3000 PCI (16MB), ran mighty fine in 1024*768*16 think it reached about 25-30 fps with peaks till 50 to 60 fps

I also played it on my A1200 with blizzard ppc (040/25 with 240Mhz ppc,128 MB+bvision) and the optimal res is 512*384*16
for an A1200 with this config.
but don't go multiplayer/online it will get pretty slow on ya if there are a lot of players in a level (more then 10)
640*480*16 was to hard on the Old permedia 2 with Q2.

What i found as a nice speedup is that you can assign some mem from your voodoo as system memory with the mediator.
Tested a Voodoo 4 4500 PCI (32MB) for a friend in my Amiga
i assigned 16 MB of gfx mem as system memory and things did
sped up.
maybe this causes less traffic over de PCI resulting in less problems with 8MB address space issue i cannot tell for
sure.

Q1 on the 060/50 CSPPC ran really amazing with the voodoo3, i could even play it in 1024*768*16, the sad thing was though there was/is a bug in 68k Q1 when walking into an area for the first time in a level it would run bog slow  :-(
Amiga is addictive coz it is fun to use

I am running Blitzquake here in the Warp3D/68k version. It is even playable with a 68040/40. I was really amazed at the benefit I got from using V3/Warp3D instead of the version relying solely on CPU power. Especially in smaller rooms/halls, it runs absolutely smooth in 512*384*16.
I had the same problem with speed when walking into a wide area for the first time. I could increase the speed considerably by using several Commands which I put in the autoexec.cfg in the ID1 directory.

Hmm, probably because the PPC board's PCI interface is clocked at 25MHz instead of 33, and doesn't support burst cycles (not that I'm aware of at least). Anyway, you might also try 480x360. I rather liked that resolution on low-end video cards with games.
