3,5 ide drive powered via floppy connector on mobo(a1200)
« on: April 08, 2006, 01:51:50 PM »
Well, i just have a doubt about this simple thing, it is possible to feed juice into an ide 3,5 drive trough the floppy
power connector?. I have a project that involves a a1200 desktop without expansions, only an hd, and i think that only a hd drive would be feasible for the standard commodore psu(a500 brick).
Anyone got ideas?
Thanks in advance!!!!

Yes, there were some kind of Amiga 1200 HD kits that included cables to draw the power from floppy power connector (they allowed to connect the power to the floppy at the same time of course). If you don't plan to have some BPPC there then a standard A1200 PSU (which is weaker than A500 PSU btw.) should be enough.

it's ok to do it, i use this connections for some years until i connect and a cdrom so now i power both hd and cd with an external cable from a 150w psu.

Ehm, my first A1200 desktop had an A500 heavy power supply and I used an 3,5" 1,6 Gb hd inside and on the outside was my CDrom, both powered by the internal connector ... never had any problem though  :lol:

So how is the wiring needed? I mean, from the floppy power connector to a standard pc power connector for ide drives.
I know that i will need to butcher out a cable for getting one, only need to know the position of the cables without frying anything!!.
Thanks in advance!!

Yes, wiring instructions would be great, please!

I tried installing a IDE-CF adapter in this manner, fried the 256MB CF card doing it (the adaptor seems fine though).
Must have got things twisted back to front.  :(

@_ThEcRoW

Small molex (floppy) power connector (CABLE SIDE):

Big molex (hdd) power connector (CABLE SIDE):

If you have a multimeter, be sure to double-check everything before power up.
Good luck!
