Iomega ZIp IDE finally sorted
« on: April 08, 2006, 04:36:14 AM »
Hi all, first of all thanks to those that tried to help me on this ZIp IDE problem I had.

Well I have got it sorted now,  the one thing I didnt think of and thtat was cable select.

Now the Zip drive IDE works flawlesley, it shows as DF7: I use the OS3.9 Zip DOS driver.

I dont know if using cabel select is supposed to work or not?
But it does.

So its like this:-

Primary, Master 6.4Gig HD
Primary, Slave 52x CD rom

Secondary, cable select Iomega Zip IDE drive as DF7:

This now all works well.

So thanks again for the time and effort all those that gave help in the first place.

Mike.

Your HD's transfer speed will be limited to that of the CD-ROM on the same channel, i.e. slow.

If you want to maximise the HD speed, a better arrangement (now you've fixed the Zip issue) would be to put the CD-ROM on channel 2 with the Zip.

The CD would then be limited by the speed of the Zip i.e. very slow, but that may not be a problem. (?)

Cheers, JaX
Be inspired! It\\\'s back!

Hi, yes I looked at what you said, my HD has no noticable speed decrease.

Its as fast now as it was before.

BTW,
My IDE`99 board was from PowerComputing I have had this board now for some 4 years.

Hi Mike,

Have looked again at my setup - it seems IOmega tools only freezes when I press the 'disk info' button.
Aside form that the setup works fine, and that's with CD and ZIP both on secondary IDE header (CD as slave, ZIP as master).
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

Yes, its one of those things I have found.
I took me hours of messing around to find that the select cable done the trick, I tried all other options but no good.
I am not sure if its the IDE`99 board that I am using or what it is?
I suspect that if I try another make of IDE`99 board it may work as it should do.

But it works and thats fine by me, ohhhhh yes my secondary CD rom set as slave or master no longer is seen by my system.
But my Primary slave CD rom works fine.

So I think I will leave it as it is.

But hang on here is another thing if I use a normal set up that is WorkBench 3.1 only and NO OS3.9 then all four work perfectly that is to say:-

Primary 6.4Gig HD as master
Primary CDrom as slave
Secondary IDE zip as Master
Secondary CD rom as slave.

I have tried this with a spare 4.3 Gig HD
This set up works perfectly so to my mind its something inside OS3.9 that is doing it, but so far I cannot find exactly what it is. :pissed:

Perhaps one of the Amiga.org boffins can help on this one????

Mike.
