Title: Escom A1200 and df1: issues
Post by: beller on May 30, 2019, 06:33:32 PM
Since I received my A1200 in 2008 I have had an issue with df1:  Using a known good drive the A1200 says there is a drive df1: but fails to recognize that a disk is in the drive.

Yesterday I tried using diskchange to see if that might help get the drive up and recognized.  No luck but then I noticed something funny.  Everytime I sent the diskchange command an icon for the disk in the drive would flash on the screen and disappear.

I've looked with no luck...anyone have a clue as to the problem and a fix?

You say a "known good drive'

All old floppy drives have the disk pin sensors "stick". which leads to found/not found

It’s the A1200...been this way since I bought it.  I’m using a new Ray Carlsen power supply....

Thanks.  Looks like it's a port connection issue....never opened the 1200.  Maybe it's something simple....

What else configuration wise besides an extra floppy does this A1200 have? I'm thinking perhaps it's some software on your hard disk interfering with DF1: possibly...like anticlick or even something in DEVS:DOSDrivers. Or, could be a resident module but that's doubtful. Have you tried a cold boot into Workbench via the Workbench floppy disk (3.0 or 3.1 or 2.0 or 2.1) and see if the problem remains?

I received the system NOS from AmigaKit in 2006 and df1: was non functional from the start. I'm putting in new Kickstarts and an Indivision over the weekend.  I'll strip it down and remove the Blizzard to see if df1: comes back from the dead.  Never opened this machine...I have booted from floppy.  No change.

No...the blizzard isn't the issue.  I stripped the 600 down and still no response from df1: which is reported as mounted.  Must be a trace on the port.

Odd question but does your DF0: main computer floppy drive have a little green light just inside the disk slot. [ not your Df1: obviously but your DF0: ]

Out of curiosity, where were you going with this? Those drives are HD drives converted for DD use. Could that affect DF1 in any way?

I was trying to find out if this has generally been a problem with these French made systems and, if so, if there was a fix.  Looks like it isn't common.  From tinkering I've found the sensor which recognizes a disk change or even a disk is inserted isn't working.  Manually doing a diskchange command results in a brief flash of the disk icon on the screen,.

I've stripped out the Blizzard and PCMCIA cards.  I think I'm down to something on the port is broken....

In the process of installing an FPU in my Blizzard this morning I noticed the DF0: was loose.  I removed the drive and installed a drive I had purchased from AmigaKit for the A600 which is in the shop.  I installed this drive in the A1200 and, surprise surprise, the df1: is now working!!  13 years and I finally fixed it!  looks like I'm tossing that Panasonic and ordering another drive!
