MUI 3.8 contains a few nasty bugs which IBrowse tries to workaround, but there are a couple of issues (at least, one can cause a crash) that can't be avoided without removing those features from IBrowse entirely :(.  Stefan Burstroem fixed these in MUI 3.9 himself many years ago.  That is the reason we recommend a minimum of MUI 3.9.

Can you be more specific? MUI 3.9 was beta at best, and though it fixes some bugs in 3.8, it also introduced new features and new bugs. So ideally, one would wish to start with MUI 3.8, and only update the classes from 3.9 that really are improvements. Well, ideally, MUI 3 for 68k should be "rebundled" :)

Tried to install the demo onto my Amikit install. Just crashed. Tried the latest AmiSSL on IB2.4. Pathetic, so incompatible with recent sites. Pity.
Well, must be my Amikit config, on Amiga Forever no problems - installed and works.

I bought it last night and have been experimenting with it. I am pretty happy so far - it does a pretty good job and is fairly speedy.

One thing I noticed is that it works better with AmigaOS 3.1.4 and the new intuition.library. iBrowse 2.4 would give me graphics corruption if it was dragged off screen, 2.5 handles going off screen just fine. I plan on testing it for a week or so and then doing a proper review.

Thanks Doug! Could you also test with results using OS3.9? That would be great!
Also, could detail how to "update" AmiSSL from an older version to the latest version?

Thanks!

I keep getting a "IBrowseNetwork " crash anytime it tries to load a secure site, non secure sites load with no problem. I reinstalled AmiSSL still no joy. I'm running an A1200 with an ACA1221 card with 63 megs fastram. It also crashes if I just go into the network settings. Anyone have any ideas?

Simply download the latest Version from Aminet and install it over your existing Version... that´s all :)

I have had issues with AmiSSL when just trying to install the newer versions that were corrected by starting with older versions and updating each one. Also, make sure you are not receiving errors when decompressing AmiSSL - it won't decompress with some gui based unarchiving utilities. I just use lha from a command line and then it works ok.

I suspect available RAM also makes a notable difference.

My A4000 (50MHz '060) with the standard motherboard RAM (2MB Chip/16MB Fast) was very slow (3.1.4.1); but my A3000 (25MHz '040) with 2MB Chip/6MB Fast--and the 256MB BigRamPlus--was significantly faster. :)

Both are running 3.1.4.1, the 4000 has a PicassoIV and the 3000 has a CyberVision 64/3D; both using P96.

Need to order another BigRamPlus for my A4000, but they're out of stock as of this writing. :-\

it won't decompress with some gui based unarchiving utilities.
You are just encountering a bug in xad that the OS 3.9 "Unarc" program, and certain other programs rely on. You will encounter the same bug if you use xadunfile from CLI. It happens when the archive contains directories that have been packed as if they are files, with trailing slashes.

For example in the AmiSSL-4.3.lha...
Code: [Select]
AmiSSL/
AmiSSL/C/
AmiSSL/C/AmigaOS3/
AmiSSL/C/AmigaOS3/OpenSSL
...
xad will fail to unpack the three first, and will instead print error message "opening file failed", and OS 3.9 Unarc will open a requester about error.
Normally, when creating an archive with an Amiga version of Lha, it doesn't create these "buggy paths" in the archive (at least I never saw it happen), so I suspect this only happens with some version of u*ix or Windows version of an Lha archiver. Regardless, I think xad should be fixed to handle it better (if it isn't already, not been paying attention to what goes on with xad).

this issue is because of unARC could not handle Softlinks like "." and ".." Entries in the Archiv. Should not be a Problem to ignore These. This works fine for me.

Out of curiosity (I'll probably buy this IB2.5 version) how is the installation handled? Does it ask to install IB 'over the top' of an existing IB installation or does it demand a fresh unique drawer of it's own? How about existing settings and bookmarks and MUI settings etc. ? Does the installer handle all of this?

I had a version of 2.4 on my A1200 so when I upgraded to 2.5 I let the installer handle sorting out what to replace. It retained my settings and bookmarks.  Smooth...and the cost was amazingly reasonable for the 14 year old purchase.  Recommend it!

I have been enjoying the new iBrowse. I can get to quite a few sites that would not work under 2.4, but anything that uses certain types of encryption really slows down my machine. (At the time it was an A4000, 68060/80 Mhz. Now it is a 68040/40 Mhz with 114 MB of RAM)
I have dabbled with dialing down the encryption (cipher) settings and it does help, but many sites still cause the Amiga to slow the mouse to a crawl.
Anyone found a way around this?

If you can manage to proxy all secure network through a raspi doing all the SSL handling it should work better.
