Amiga.ORG and RSS Feeds
« on: September 04, 2005, 03:01:25 AM »
Thank you for whoever recently updated your RSS feeds. They now work great with IE 7's RSS compliance. Also, for a long time I couldn't get them to work very well with any RSS application I had, and you don't want to know what FEED Validator said about them..

What exactly is RSS?

I've heard it's some sort of notify system for news, so how does it work?

And why are you getting notified of Amiga news on Internet Explorer 7!?

:-)

From this Wikipedia entry:

Quote

The technology of RSS allows Internet users to subscribe to websites that have provided RSS feeds; these are typically sites that change or add content regularly. To use this technology, site owners create or obtain specialized software (such as a content management system) which, in the machine-readable XML format, presents new articles in a list, giving a line or two of each article and a link to the full article or post. Unlike subscriptions to many printed newspapers and magazines, most RSS subscriptions are free.

The RSS formats provide web content or summaries of web content together with links to the full versions of the content, and other meta-data. This information is delivered as an XML file called an RSS feed, webfeed, RSS stream, or RSS channel. In addition to facilitating syndication, RSS allows a website's frequent readers to track updates on the site using an aggregator.

So this program acts as a go-between from Amiga.org to your browser/POP3 or something, loading little snippets of news as and when they arrive?

After reading the archive info that blobrana provided I can see it uses PIPE: which to me rings alarm bells. The thing could open a serious can of backdoor/trojan worms.

For now I'll continue to reload the Amiga.org homepage and sit here with my pipe(/PIPE:) and slippers reading the daily news...

Basically, a news ticker... Showing you the latest news
You'll probably see an RSS icon in the URL bar of of your browser.
RSS just specifies the format of an XML page that contains whatever information you want. The RSS files must include a Name and update time interval (usually 30 or 60 miniutes). In this case it is the latest news. RSS reader just fetch this URL for the RSS XML page and display the content.
I have feeds for weather info and use it to get tracking info for shipped purchases.
